REGGIE BALL, MEAT BALL
Sorry for the delay there. Just had a meatball sub from Carmine's ("I'm back/back in the New York groove!"....anyone? anyone?)...
--Are you as psyched up about USC/UCLA as I am? That's one of my favorite games every year. It's the Glam Fest of college football. Beautiful people, beautiful weather, beautiful stadiums. Bootyful quarterback. I'm waiting for the announcer to say that the "Trojans are %80.33 percent effective within the red zone."
--Do you get the feeling that Wake Forest is going to win just because they have better team chemistry? Reggie Ball reminds me of another former Tech athlete: Stephon Marbury. Yes, very talented, but something about the way he carries himself turns teammates off. To be fair to Ball, at least three of his passes have been dropped today by the "Come See Our Johnsons" tandem of Calvin and James. Tech's wideouts need to work on catching the football with their hands out in front of their shoulder pads. Then again, it is the 12th game of the season. If they haven't mastered it yet...
Wake Forest is going to win the ACC Champioship Game without scoring a touchdown. That Orange Bowl halftime show better be pretty damn good this year.
--Is it just me or does Geico have the deepest advertising budget on earth? It's not just that they have so many ads on TV, they've got two different campaigns running concurrently. There's the caveman guy campaign, which is anti-aboriginal (a term you don't hear enough in our otherwise p.c. society) and then there's the "We hired an actor" campaign, which is genius. What I'd love to see them do is hire an actor to stand in for another actor who's known for being notoriously bad. I'm dating myself here, but couldn't they hire Elizabeth Shue to do an ad with her brother, Andrew Shue? Would he agree to that?

About this blog
NBCSports.com's John Walters goes into the world of college sports and well beyond. From Notre Dame to the latest in pop culture, JDub tackles it all.
So why all the Reggie Ball-busting? It's staggering in any year that Wake Forest-Georgia Tech is (a) on TV and (b) carrying a BCS berth on the line. Yeah, they really got the best of the Big East a few years back.
Where's Ball going to be in a few years? My guess is Orlando -- that's where modest G-Tech quarterbacks go. George Godsey is at UCF, Joe Hamilton's with the (gasp) Predators. I wish Ball would become a GA at Ball State, just so Walters can reprise the classic "Ball State's Ball states" line again. Was that Raphael or Rapheol?
You didn't even account for the Gecko wing of the Geiko TV-ad offensive. All that to ... try to offset Kenny Mayne?
I mention this only because nobody else has referenced Elisabeth (good spelling) Shue since the last person to rent "The Hollow Man" (which was in like 2003): in the new Bond movie, the stunning Eva Green has scenes where she looks like a brunette Shue. The other thing I take from Casino Royale: what's with the inhaler? In the book, they at least drop in that Le Chiffre likes the benzedrine, but in the movie, it's like he's just an asthmatic. Which has me dreaming of a "Thank You For Smoking" campaign to casually drop asthmatics into popular cinema, even as world financiers of terrorists. OK, this qualifies as a tangent now.
