ZITTANY LIONS?
Here's what you missed if you happened not to be in State College this morning. At 9:30 a.m. at The Nittany Lion Inn, Penn State professor Nina Jablonski gave a lecture entitled "Your Skin, Warts and All: The Evolution and Cultural History of Human Skin".
It is your largest organ, after all.
Eight Is Too Much
One reason you're hearing so much about how Notre Dame will fare in its first eight games? The Irish are the only school facing eight consecutive BCS conference opponents in their first eight games. Then, to further dramatize the disparity between ND's opening eight contests and the final four (Navy, Army, Merchant Marine and Salvation Army), the Irish have a bye week following that eighth game...at home versus Southern Cal.
Corso has the Irish starting 2-6. Kirk/Herbie the Dentist has them starting 3-5, as do I. Don't ask me how. Everlasting Blogstalker G.A. wonders what will transpire should the Irish finish 6-6 overall. "I mean, what BCS bowl will they be invited to?" he asks. G.A. is a Florida alum, it should be noted.
No Soup For You
Notre Dame was allotted 5,000 tickets for tonight's game in Happy Valley. Guess how many they made available for sale to Notre Dame's 11,600 students?
Zero. That's right, zero.
That ain't cool.
Timing
From my Altoona lair 45 miles south of State College, I left for tonight's 6 p.m. game at 10 a.m. Covered the first 44 miles in just under an hour. And covered the last mile in just under an hour. And that's six-eight hours before kickoff.
The Number 3
Last week's leading rusher for Notre Dame (12 carries, 28 yards) wore number three. His name? Demetrius Jones. The leading rusher for Notre Dame the last three seasons wore number three: Darius Walker. In its last three games--all blowout losses--the Irish have had three different leading rushers...and two of them were quarterbacks. Brady Quinn gained 74 yards at USC, Walker had 128 in his best performance of the season in the Sugar Bowl (perhaps that game emboldened him to declare for the draft? Now he's playing nowhere) and then Jones last week versus Georgia Tech.

Would have paid cash to have J-Dub attend Prof. Nina's skin lecture, if only so that when she made the obligatory reference to it being our largest organ, J-Dub could cough loudly. Just a well-timed cough is all it'd take.
As good as the day's college football could be, there were so few close games on TV in the Atlanta Airport Marriott that for a few fleeting moments, I was watching "Osmosis Jones." Honest. Chris Rock's a funny guy, even as a white blood cell.
I have extra tix to that ND v. Merchant Marines game if anyone wants to go. It's still the hottest thing going on in SB on a Saturday no matter how bad it gets!
