BLAKE STEPP LIVELY
What a wonderfully serendipitous late night of viewing on Monday. If you tuned in to ESPN, you could watch Gonzaga at San Diego. Simultaneously, one of HBO's channels was airing "Accepted", starring the lithesome Blake Lively (who appeared earlier in the evening on "Gossip Girl", as well). So, yeah, how could I not come up with the above header?
"Accepted" is a fine little film, a "Van Wilder" meets "Revenge of the Nerds" vehicle. Justin Long, who has been in both "Ed" and Drew Barrymore, played the loser-turned-maverick role perfectly. And then there was Lively, who is lovely and light. She's light and lively. Blake Lively reminds me of every other girl at Xavier High School, the sister school to mine back in Phoenix. I would write that she reminds me of every other girl at Xavier whom I knew, but I didn't know any of them.
Sunday, Bloody Mary Sunday
Two of my buddies in Denver have a tradition of going out on Sunday afternoons and drinking Bloody Mary's. I mention that not because it's newsworthy, but because I'm disappointed that neither of them came up with the above header to describe their routine.
Longest's Day
There is a placekicker from a little-known school -- St. Xavier in Chicago-- who has been invited to this week's NFL scouting combine. The thing about him is I don't know if he belongs in the "Most Aptly Named Sportspeople" list or the NFL Guys with Pornstar Names" list. The answer, likely, is both. The kicker's name? Richard Longest.
Good Mourning Vietnam
National Geographic aired a DVR-worthy doc last night entitled "Vietnam". It's three hours long, but it's excellent. I imagine NG will re-air it some night soon. If you have a chance, give it a look.
But Enough About Me
Jancee Dunn grew up in New Jersey, graduated from high school in 1984 and always dreamt of writing for her favorite magazine...then eventually did. I have no idea what we have in common. Anyway, my good buddy Billy Hubbell informed me recently that she'd written a memoir entitle "But Enough About Me." He told me that he loved it and I always trust Billy's pop culture recommendations. This is a 42 year-old man who still keeps lists of his favorite books and films and records of the year. We all benefity from Billy's freakishness.
Anyway, I picked it up and was hooked after the first two pages. Jancee (she comes from three generations of J.C. Penney's employees, and three generations of men named J.C.--even though her family is no relation to the store's founder; she had no brothers, so her parents compromised with Jancee), who's been a writer for "Rolling Stone" since 1989, explains how to interview a rock band in three easy paragraphs. You could waste a semester in journalism class and not learn as much as she teaches in those 800 words. Good stuff.

About this blog
NBCSports.com's John Walters goes into the world of college sports and well beyond. From Notre Dame to the latest in pop culture, JDub tackles it all.
Better, I suppose, then if she were third-generation with a different American store empire and named, say, Walmartina.
I saw Peter King reference the Longest guy this morning and thought to e-mail you, but you're all over it. Safe to assume his draft-day wait will be longer than Chris Long. Or for that matter, former Penn State star Brandon Short (third-round, 2000).
Have you seen the Kyle Kendrick prank yet? Classic. Long live Kobayashi Iwamura.
Dangit. New NBC blog censors are as bad as the old one. It tells you the comment couldn't go through because you've posted too many times recently -- entirely true, most will argue -- but then when you try again, it already made it up. Arggh.
