Quick Moves in First 14.5 Hours

We're 14 hours into the 2008 free agency period. As our buddy Dan Pompei from the Chicago Tribune noted, team decision makers agree the shelves are not stocked with franchise-altering players.

Why? It's because the number of players franchised (12) and the proliferation of teams with more cap room to spend since the CBA passed less than two years ago ($85 million to $116 million in 24 months) means teams had cash on hand to keep guys around.

So the guys who are free agents today - even if they are good players - are free agents because their former teams felt they either had a better guy on hand (Michael Turner, ex of the Chargers) or they had too rich an asking price for their services (Asante Samuel, soon-to-be Eagle).

Here are the 7 biggest developments in the first 14 hours.

1. Asante Samuel bound for Philly.

With a 4:30 eastern press conference scheduled, the ex-Patriots corner will be the biggest name to be locked down on the first day of free agency. For the Eagles, great get. You couple Samuel with Sheldon Brown on the outside, and Brian Dawkins at safety and you have a terrific secondary. Samuel NEEDS a good safety behind him in order for him to make the kind of plays on the ball that result in picks (he had 16 over the past two seasons). He'll get beat - less than Lito Sheppard - so Eagles fans can't think they have the next Champ Bailey. But overall, Samuel will win you more games than he'll help lose.

2. Jets Unloading Early

Rich Cimini of the New York Daily News has been on top of the Jets moves to bring in Panthers DT Kris Jenkins (in exchange for third and fifth-round picks), move linebacker Jonathan Vilma (Saints for a fourth that could become a third) and secure free agent guard Alan Faneca (Pittsburgh). Those are two good players (theoretically) coming in and while Vilma's a good one going out, his usefulness seemed at an end. Addition by subtraction even with a player as talented as Vilma. Jenkins can be a bit expressive. How well he'll operate in Eric Mangini's buttoned-down system will be interesting to see.

3. Bengals Defense Takes Hits

Safety Madieu Williams has signed a six-year deal with the Vikings and defensive end Justin Smith is being wined and dined by the Nine(rs). For a defense that can ill-afford to get worse, Cincy's doing just that.

4. Big Day for Browns

Cleveland got a deal done with quarterback Derek Anderson ($24 million over three seasons and convinced the Packers to pull the franchise tag off defensive tackle Corey Williams and send him to Cleveland for a second-round pick. With Pittsburgh losing Faneca and the Bengals getting worse and the Ravens ill-prepared to get busy in free agency, the Browns are turning into the beasts of the AFC North, no?

5. QB Developments

Nothing planet-moving but Todd Collins is staying with the Skins, Chris Redman got re-signed by the Falcons and Cleo Lemon becomes the new Quinn Gray (i.e. backup to David Garrard) in Jacksonville. Good for all three who have more than paid their dues in the league to get a little security and be shown some love on Day 1.

6. Miami's Efforts to Rejoin NFL

The Dallas Morning News has DT Jason Ferguson going to Miami. Also, Cardinals linebacker Calvin Pace is being pitched woo. And the team dealt for Niners guard Justin Smiley. That's a good start to spending the almost $40 million in cap space the team's got available. Quarterback (Josh McCown's on the menu), safety and wideout also are getting a looksee.

7. Bucs Got Bucks

Tampa had $44 million in cap space when the clock struck 12. Deals for Saints center Jeff Faine and a possible one for wide receiver Devery Henderson are going to chew into that. Receiver D.J. Hackett, Drayton Florence and many, many more are anticipated to do the same.

8. Big Names Just Watching, Thanks

Michael Turner is supposed to be visiting Atlanta (his agent, Bus Cook, hasn't hit me back yet). And there's been no word on Randy Moss heading anywhere.

9. Niners Gettin' Busy

DeShaun Foster signed in SF, Linebacker Dontarrious Thomas could soon. And the same goes for Lions backup QB J.T. O'Sullivan and one can expect former Ram Isaac Bruce to get a call from new Niners OC Mike Martz.

10. Good Teams Not Involved

An indication of how solid the market isn't? New England, Indy, San Diego, Pittsburgh, Tennessee and the Jags haven't done much if anything. On the NFC side, the Giants, Cowboys, Packers, Seahawks and Redskins are idle. For a team like Washington or Indy, that's because they don't have much dough. And for a team like the Bucs - the only playoff team partying right now - they were probably the worst of the 12 playoff teams. Goes to show there just aren't that many movers and shakers on the market.
