FLOWERS, LOVE AND DESIRE OUT WEST
Welcome to the West Region semifinals from the scorching (89 degrees) Valley of the Sun. It's actually quite comfortable outdoors, but it's steamy inside. Soap-opera steamy, judging by the names in the programs.
We've got Love in the afternoon, for example, as Xavier center Jason Love will take the floor for the Musketeers' 4:10 p.m. tip-off. Xavier has Love, but West Virginia will remember to bring flowers. As in 6-7 forward John Flowers. And of course, all that Love and Flowers could very well lead to Huggins.
But we have Love all night, as Kevin Love will represent UCLA in the second game. What's more important, though, Love or Desire? The Hilltoppers of Western Kentucky bring Desire Gabou, a 6-2 guard from the Ivory Coast, to every game they play.
The most interesting name on all four rosters? Xavier center Charles Bronson.
How much fun is it to go through life knowing that every sportswriter you encounter is going to ask you if you've seen "Death Wish"? Me, I'd ask if he's seen "The Great Escape."
We'll be talking about anything you want (and don't want) during this evening's blog. Everything from Chelsea Clinton to "Chelsea, Lately" to hill-obstructing skyscrapers in Phoenix to sportswriters who wear shorts to cover NCAA tournament games (giving us our first new blossary term in a while, shortswriters) (for blog newcomers, "blossary" is our little glossary of terms that have been invented via this blog, but I imagine you already figgered that...past blossary terms include:
fruscinating: when someone, something or some team is equally fascinating and frustrating. This term actually was picked up and discussed by Deadspin last year.
Pandora's botox: When you entreat to solve a problem by artificial and cosmetic means, which only creates more problems.
Anyway, we'll discuss all of that. Plus--yes--basketball.
For now, as a service to friends of mine who say, "How come you never write that much any more?" and then I say, "Yes, I do," and then they say, "I didn't see a blog today", and then I get that angry crazy face that Calvin used to get in "Calvin and Hobbes" and remind them that blogging is like 10% of what I do and that they just have to be smart enough to go to our homepage and look for my last name in front of a story and then they say, "That's too difficult" and then I say, "Well, then, I'm just going to keep writing these run-on sentences", anyway, for those people, and they know who they are, here's a link to the latest column. Of course, you could have just gone to nbcsports.com and looked for this cat's name, but hey, don't overextend yourselves....
