COLE'S FIELDHOUSE

My buddy Mike, who currently can be seen (but never obscene) on the Minnesota T-Wolves and Milwaukee Bucks pre- and post-game shows on Fox Sports North, has been raving to me for a few weeks about Cole Aldrich of Kansas. Now, I had partially rock-chalked this up to Mike and Cole both having been raised in Bloomington, Minn. But after this first half that Aldrich just had, I'm inclined to believe him.

Coming off the bench, Aldrich had six points, six rebounds and I don't know how many blocks. He just took over the game, though. At one point he batted a Ty Lawson lay-up try over the heads of the KU cheerleaders and into the feet of stunned San Antonio Police officer Troy Smith, who was seated about 20 feet from the baseline.

"You know how they say it's coming into your living room?" Smith, who is working game security, told me. "Well, that came right into my living room."

Just before halftime I found Mike at his seat and asked, "What is Cole Aldrich doing out there?"

"Making himself 10 million dollars," was Mike's reply.

This is one long-armed, rangy 19-year-old (now I sound just like the media I was criticizing for gushing over a Great White Hope). Here's the funny thing, though. Aldrich played a total of 11 minutes in KU's last three tournament wins, scoring a total of 2 points while grabbing 2 rebounds.

Already in the first half, he has played at least 11 minutes (they have yet to hand out stats on press row) and exceeded those totals in triplicate.

It's 44-27 at the half, as UNC has quietly jumped back into this game. They were down by 26 at one point.
