DRAFT NOTES, OTHER JUNK
The Denver Broncos select Ryan Clady of the Boise State Broncos, a school with nearly identical uniform colors that is as close to Denver as it is to any NFL franchise. So much for all the quantitative and qualitative analysis that goes into draft day.
With the selections of Jake Long (Miami), Chris Long (St. Louis) and Matt Ryan (Atlanta) as picks 1-2-3, this becomes the first NFL draft since 1975 in which the first three players picked were white. I don't know how much further you'd have to go back to find a draft in which the top three selections were white but none were named White (Randy White was the second pick), or how far you'd have to go back in which the top three selections were white and none was a quarterback selected by the Falcons (Steve Bartkowski was the top overall pick).
By the way, anyone-anyone? Bueller?-- know the added significance of Bartkowski's selection? That's right, the Cal QB selected as his agent a fellow Golden Bear, a wet-behind-the-ears kid named Leigh Steinberg.
ADAMS FAMILY
Inspired by my John Adams riff, Everlasting, Everglading Blogstalker G.A. proposed a 12-part series on Sam Adams. Thus, counter-inspired, I offer my top ten Adamses we'd love to see HBO devote a dozen painstaking hours to -- with Laura Linney appearing in every series, of course:
1) Pugsley Ad(d)ams
2) Alvan Adams
3) Bryan Adams (6 parts) and Ryan Adams (the other six)
4) Ansel Adams (in black and white)
5) Don Adams (with Linney portraying Barbara Feldon, naturally)
6) Douglas Adams ("Don't panic!")
7) Maude Adams
9) Eddie Adams
10) Carbon Atoms (Yes, but won't viewers find this Bohr-ing?)
SHARK ATTACK
Updating the shark attack tale, it had been 49 years since the last fatal shark attack off the coast of San Diego County. David Martin, 66, died yesterday morning while swimming with about eight other members of the Triathlon Club of San Diego. A retired veterinarian and father of four, Martin was bitten on both legs, most likely by a great white, and died from massive loss of blood. Today lifeguards are recommending that people not swim or surf along an eight-mile stretch of beach from Torrey Pines to just north of Encinitas, but if you are familiar with that part of the world, you'll not be surprised that today surfers entered the water as usual.

About this blog
NBCSports.com's John Walters goes into the world of college sports and well beyond. From Notre Dame to the latest in pop culture, JDub tackles it all.
I'm staying away from the Adamses to avoid the slightly uncomfortable thought of counter-counter-inspiration.
The whole Long-Long deal at the top of the draft -- especially a draft whose first round was remarkably short -- has me wishing that St. Xavier kicker Shane Longest goes with the last pick. That's only because it's too much to ask Longar Longar to be drafted here.
I'll point out, just in the name of actual sports relevance, that only four players from Florida colleges went in the first two rounds, the lowest such total since 1996. There had been at least six every year since, and I'm fairly certain that global warming plays a role in this.
