FIRST HALF OBSERVATIONS
1. Is it really only 38-35, Memphis? It feels as if the Tigers are up at least by ten.
2. UCLA has only been called for 3 personal fouls. Just three. Coach Howland may want to consider going to the Hack-a-Tiger immediately in the second half.
3. Darren Collison has been vewwwy quiet. Hunting wabbits quiet. The junior guard made a nice drive to the hoop in the final seconds of the first half for his only points of the game so far.
4. Russell Westbrook--11 points--is the one Bruin who has totally asserted himself in the first half. Even Kevin Love has been somewhat docile.
5. Wouldn't you like to watch Memphis' starting five take on the Knicks for one quarter. The Tigers are athletics and confident and, yes, well-coached.
6. Shawn Taggart, nice half for a reserve. Seven points and seven boards in 13 minutes. Earlier this month I wrote about the Buckets and Boards (or, for guards, Buckets and Assists) stat. If you add a player's points + rebounds and it's higher than his minutes played, then he is having a productive game. Right now Taggart has the best B&B quotient of any player on the court: 14/13. The only player on the court who is close is Russell Westbrook (10 points, 6 rebounds in 17 minutes, or 16/17).
7. John Thompson is wearing black Crocs with his suit.
