HEAT MEISNER, COLD MEISNER
The Rolling Stone arrived in the mail the other day, and there were The Eagles on the cover. It's funny. This weekend the two biggest concerts in New York City are Van Halen (Friday night at MSG) and The Eagles (tonight in Newark). And I wonder who today's teenagers will be going to see when they're my age. That's right: the Stones.
Anyway, reading about the best-selling U.S. rock band in history reminded me of one of their former members, Randy Meisner, who only sang lead vocals on "Take It To The Limit" (a song we've all sung lead vocals at some point in our lives, most likely when not all alone at the end of the evening). Anyway, it all took me back to junior high, listening to Casey Kasem do the Top 40 on the radio, and then I searched on YouTube and found this classic version of Meisner's "Deep Inside My Heart"...
A few observations:
1) Nicholas Bradford called. He wants his haircut back.
2) White people still cannot dance very well, but we've come a loooooong way since this video.
3) Hey, Mr. Tambourine Man, untuck your shirt for me.
4) Kim Carnes and Sandra Locke: Separated at birth?
5) I had a shirt just like that in 7th grade...I'm talking about Ms. Carnes'.
6) You can see the influence that "Urban Cowboy" had on everyone's fashion sense back then.
7) Deep down, though, I mean, deep (deep)....inside (inside)...your heart (your heart), you've gotta admit that this is a kickass rock song. Right?
My Favorite Martin
I've always liked Coldplay's Chris Martin, even before his appearance on "Extras". He's so talented and self-deprecating that you can almost forgive him for being the rock star-who-marries-a-fabulous-babe-actress. And then he goes and announces that Coldplay is going to play a free show in New York City next month because during their last tour "we f'ed up and played a couple of (bleep) concerts (in NYC) and we're embarrassed about it." Here he is in the current issue of Rolling Stone, responding to a question about how the band decides which songs they'll play on tour:
"We're gonna play a nine-hour set and provide mattresses when people need to sleep. We're going to play all our catalog and all Bruce Springsteen's.
Six Thoughts On Lakers-Spurs
1. There's only one player on the Laker roster who is NOT a threat to score at least 15 points in any given game, and that's D.J. Mbenga.
2. Is it just me or has Tim Duncan looked old this entire postseason? He rarely seems able to get his shot, even when only one man is guarding him.
3. Has anyone yet dubbed Fabricio Oberto "Jerky Boy" or just "Jerky"?
4. Again...and this is all WITHOUT Andrew Bynum.
5. Here's what I say when someone asks if Kobe is better than MJ: Kobe is the first and only player in the league whose talent equals MJ's. The difference is that MJ took the ruling standard of the time for one-on-one prowess and all-around athleticism--Julius Erving--and went well beyond it. Kobe hasn't gone beyond his era's ruling standard, Jordan, but he has at least approached it.
6. The Spurs will lose this series and they'll always understood that they blew it by failing to lock down Game 1 when they had the 20-point lead. The Lakers were sleepwalking. If San Antonio had won, Gregg Popovich could have basically kept his starters back at the hotel (Shudders?) for Game 2, absorbed the 30-point blowout and at least have them rested for Game 3 tied 1-1. Now the Spurs are down 2-0 and will be playing their 4th game in seven days on Sunday. And they won't have more than one day of rest between games for the remainder of the series.
