LAKER GRRRLS!

I logged on to the NBC Sports Blog service for the most innocent and, as is often the case with me, inconsequential of reasons. Obsessed as I am with the upcoming premiere of The Strangers (just three days away!), last night I conjured what might be the film's perfect ending.

Here's what happens: Liv Tyler and Scott Speedman are seated in front of the trio of intruders. Two of them unmask themselves and we learn that they are Bronson Pinchot and Mark Linn-Baker. The third would be Albert Camus, though how many people really know what he looks like? Besides, he's dead.

But then I found my friend and colleague Tiffany Simons' blog entry and well, I was blowed away. A few things:

1) I'd never met Laura Lane before two weeks ago tonight, but she was unfailingly nice and generous to me. And I know you think we media types stick together, and that may be somewhat true, but here's what Lane, who did not know me, did. I'm at Game 5 of the Jazz-Lakers and my computer dies. And I'm supposed to blog and write a column off the game. Lane is under no such deadline pressure, and she happens to be seated next to me. Seeing my plight, she offers me the use of her laptop computer for the entire game and even waited around while I finished my story after the game (and I'm not that good-looking, or well-connected).

2) Here is the controversial portion of the blog in question, the one that led espn.com to excise her blog from its site.

3) The rumored Laker Girl who has the same name (Vanessa) as Bryant's wife and bears a strong resemblance to her, remains on the team's web site (4th from the right), probably because it is a team photo. As you can see, though, she is no longer hyper-linkable. Which is a shame. I do not know if she is still part of the squad.

So, if you're scoring at home, that's one angry spouse of the greatest player on the planet, and two females who allegedly dared get in her/his way whose identities have summarily and without delay been stricken from their professional places of record. Somewhere, former NY Daily News columnist Lisa Olson is nodding knowingly.

ESPN The Mag has an explanation ...

Over/under on posts before I see "Lane Violation" as a subhed ... 1.5

If I remember right, L.L. has a degree or two of separation from the blog's own L.A. ...

Wow, that is fascinating (and I realize I could have just written another item, with a catchy title like "Lane Violation", "Low Is Lane", "Hysteria Lane", "Laptop Lane" or "Tutu Boo Boo", but I just like logging on and seeing a number greater than "1"--or "0"--on the Comments list).

Anyway, hopefully ESPN and Laura (and Stephen A.) realize that you cannot work for a publication, especially one in which your words appear on-line, and then have a back-up "personal" blog and expect readers to make a distinction. They're still your thoughts, after all. Even your emails should be written with the knowledge that they may just fall into Will Leitch's hands, or Christmas Ape's.

Meanwhile, this being America and all, I imagine Laker Girl Vanessa and my new pal Laura have already fielded offers to pose for "Playboy".

It's been a long time since I've been hyper-linkable. And honestly, it's overrated.

Had to do a search for the L Lane picture and
and now thinking that the seating was not assinged at the Jazz-Lakers press table and that the J-Dub computer did not really crash...?

Outstanding fake subheds. Don't be ashamed to self-comment. Much better than my next fake offering, "ESPN Standing on its Lauras" ...

"Oh, no. My laptop seems to have stopped working. What are you writing? Hey, I have a blog, too. Oh, third graf, there's no 'e' in whorish."
