Why Is This Man Smiling?

Cedric Benson is pretty much dangling by fibers in Chicago, it appears.

The Bears running back - arrested a month ago on a drunken boating charge in Texas - took to the open road in Austin Friday night and got arrested on a drunken driving charge after zipping through a red light between 3 and 4 a.m. in the heart of downtown Austin.

Bears GM Jerry Angelo had the quote of the offseason when asked Saturday about Benson's arrest, saying in the Chicago Tribune, "Disappointment is a too-often used word when you're talking about Cedric. The No. 1 lesson for every player is to protect your job."

After his arrest May 3 for piloting a party boat while tipsy, Benson got a fair amount of sympathy because the spin was that he wasn't drunk and authorities were overly aggressive in taking him into custody. Kinda hard to feel much sympathy for Benson now.

As of 4 p.m. Saturday, a Tribune poll accompanying the story about Benson's arrest had 88 percent of readers voting to cut the former first-round pick.

Benson deserves everything he is getting. I have to admit that from an outsiders perspective(non Austin-ites) this could look like the cops are just harassing another black superstar. These cops know a little more than everyone else, and so do many people in Austin who are familiar with Benson. Benson is a theif, drug dealer/user, and not to mention rapist. Of course when you are the star running back at UT, you are going to get some passes. Getting passes for petty crimes or one time slip ups is one thing, having a city turn its back while you and your brother sell drugs and act like complete neanderthal thugs? That won't sit well with some people.

I cannot understand why it is okay to suspend players for bar fights, illegal dog fights, etc. but that they do not get suspended for DUIs. Driving while under the influence is a crime! It is insane how the media, fans, etc just go "yeah yeah whatever" and just sweep it under the rug when they get caught. The league needs to be consistent and so does society. Driving drunk causes injury and possibly death. If the league is going to stand for anything, the should suspend those with DUIs for at least 4 games or more. Society should demand that people who drive drunk pay the price. Wake up America! Wake up NFL!!! Be consistent for god's sake.
