Favre "Itches". Film at 11.
Wow. What a shock. If you see any presses around, you might want to stop them.
Brett Favre - the man who set the NFL mark for hasty decisions he'd soon regret with 288 interceptions - has the "itch" to return to the NFL, according to ESPN's Chris Mortensen. Mort also reports that Favre's family has been "tugging" on him to play.
"Itching"? "Tugging"? Favre's got everything going there but swelling and painful burning.
Whether this is a story or not depends on what kind of "itch" it is. Is it an"itch" similar to the one I get when I want to up and fly to Vegas for seven days of non-stop golfin', gamblin', cussin', dippin' and fightin'?
If so, Ted Thompson, Mike McCarthy and Aaron Rodgers have nothing to worry about. It'll pass.
But if it's an itch similar to the one I get when I want to mow the lawn (and I do like to mow the lawn), well then that's a horse of a different zip code.
As I predicted March 4, the day Favre retired, these stories are inevitable. He's fully healthy, still near the height of his powers and he played for a very good team last season. People - media, fans, agents, teammates - want to feed the notion that the flame's not out. It's great conversation and Favre hasn't suitably squashed it.
Saying: "I know I can play but I don't think I want to" as he did on the day he retired isn't what one would call adamant.
This is AWESOME news for Packers GM Thompson, their head coach McCarthy and ascending quarterback Rodgers. What could be better than having Favre down in Kiln, picking his teeth with a piece of straw and skipping stones across the crick while contemplating a return while the team enters its first post-Favre camp in 16 years.
Why would they want the focus on 2008 and the guys who've been there for all the OTAs, passing camps and meetings?

About this blog
Drilling deeply into the mantle layer of America's Passion, NBCSports.com's Tom Curran offers up quick hits and insights on all things NFL.
Tom -
Wow, two column entries in a few days (see previous entry on Michael Strahan HOF scenario) ripping on Brett Favre. I wonder what Brett ever did to you to make you act so petty. Maybe see how it all plays out with Brett before commenting on the situation you know nothing about other than what your competitor from ESPN is reporting. Right now you just look foolish and pathetic in a wanna-be but never could be kind of way. Other than commentary like this your blog is usually pretty interesting to read - maybe just keep to the interesting stuff.
Hey Joe?
Why not just come off sounding like Farve homer? Little insecure are we?
Curran hit the nail on the head.
And my feeling is, Farve needs to observe Man Law #31-
"Players who cry at their retirement press conference lose rights to a future comeback"
OMG please just go away. Everyone is sick to death of his maybe I will maybe I won't come back for the past 5 years. Do us all a fave and JUST GO AWAY... He's taken up enough of the sports pages with his baloney. I think if a writer will promiss to put his name in the news every few months, then he won't have to keep opening his mouth and we won't have to listen to him.
Favre is too greedy to retire --he has never given anything back to football and I doubt he will--ego is too big to stay away--just dosent want to practice now but will time his decison. He is the roger clemens of the nfl--his family should advise him to spend time with them--bears make it -bulls make it but pigs seldom do
Hey Brett! The crying act didn't fool anyone. Hope you get crushed this year just for the fact you are playing mind games with everyone. You're getting to be as annoying as T.O. and Clemens.
Hey Pato, Favre has never done anything for the NFL? Come on dude, he has only donated some 10 mil. to NFL youth groups, and donated the state of Alabama 20 mil. for disaster relief for Katrina. Yes i am from the cheese state but i too am tired of all the nonsense circling Favre's fate. But never diminish his ability to play or his way of life. 80% of NFL players could take some advise on how to live their lives from Brett.
Ben you are absolutely right! Favre has donated so much of his time and money to great charities that have helped so many people. I am a devoted CHEESE HEAD mostly because of Brett. His heart and soul is what made me fall in love with football. I am sure he is going to have a piece of him that will always want to play. But guys remember something, Brett did retire on March 4, it is the media that keeps mentioning Favre and keeping the stories "alive".
Sounds like sour grapes to me...especially the remark about Kiln, "crick" and picking his teeth with straw. He built a huge home on a large acreage in west Hattiesburg a number of years ago. He is a native son of THE KILN. Please research before trying to make fun of someone you don't like. He has done charitable work, just not in anyone's face. He loves the game and if he thinks he retired too soon, why not come back and play?
What the hay...
Hattiesburg, MS
I love Brett's passion in playing football. It is contagious and he has given me many years of joy, and I have never even set foot in WI or MS! He has been an inspiration to me; he and his wife who give to others less fortunate, and the way they rally in times of sadness and illness. I will miss him if he has truly retired, and it won't seem like Packers football without him. I hope he does come back, he is healthy and has played with this rookie team and is the Packers best hope for a Superbowl trophy. I also feel bad for Aaron Rodgers if he does return, but Brett is what is best for the team!
Never done anything for football? Whoever would make that statement is either a Bears Fan or a loser. Wait, scratch that...same thing.
Anyway, Favre IS PRO FOOTBALL! The on and off the field tragedies, the interviews, the great guy that he is, NEVER DONE ANYTHING FOR FOOTBALL? I supposed he should have been like John Elway, who cried for 14 seasons before becoming a nice guy (nobody liked him). Or like Dan Marino who though the should have been GRANTED a Super Bowl Trophy rather than earning one like a man. "The ownership sould have gave me more weapons..wah, wah, wah." Weapons? Has Brett Favre ever had a TRUE weapon? Donald Driver doesn't count, sorry Donald. His offensive line has never been impressive and he was never given the ALL PRO packages that Elway, Marino, Aikman, Young, and Montana were given. Those guys were SURROUNDED by Hall of Famers and here Favre led his team without even PLAYING with a Hall of Famer (On offense...Reggie White of course on Defense). Monday Night Football ratings are the highest when Favre plays...go ask the networks. And don't forget the charity work and the positive roll model he has been for kids. He has fought and clawed his way back from adversity after adversity and still he fights on.
So don't give me any crap about not doing anything for football. Curran, you are a moron who is bored with your pre-NFL gossip and who is too lazy to go out there and get a real story. GET OFF YOUR A$$!
Thank you,
Jason Mercier
Son, we live in a world that has walls. And those walls have to be guarded by men with guns. Who's gonna do it? You? You, Lt. Weinberg? I have a greater responsibility than you can possibly fathom. You weep for Santiago and you curse the Marines. You have that luxury. You have the luxury of not knowing what I know: that Santiago's death, while tragic, probably saved lives. And my existence, while grotesque and incomprehensible to you, saves lives...You don't want the truth. Because deep down, in places you don't talk about at parties, you want me on that wall. You need me on that wall.
We use words like honor, code, loyalty...we use these words as the backbone to a life spent defending something. You use 'em as a punchline. I have neither the time nor the inclination to explain myself to a man who rises and sleeps under the blanket of the very freedom I provide, then questions the manner in which I provide it! I'd rather you just said thank you and went on your way. Otherwise, I suggest you pick up a weapon and stand a post. Either way, I don't give a damn what you think you're entitled to!
Hey Jason?
Thanks for the Favre cheerleading speech.
But, be that as it may it doesn't change a thing, Favre retired and needs to stay retired- period!
Get over it!
John...I stood those gates for 6 years...thank you. I didn't need a movie quote either, I lived it!
Boris...oh, I forget where it said he was coming back? Did Curran say it? No...pure speculation, which was the point of the whole post. I agree that Favre needs to stay retired because the Packers need to move on and I don't want to see him in another uniform. Thanks for seeing right through that one, smart guy! But NO ONE can tell me - including the brilliant Curran - that Favre has done NOTHING for football...c'mon...

Favre is still hot in the pocket.....just like in the playoff game, when he was almost falling to the ground while running and yet he still managed to make yet another very outstanding pass. I think Aaron Rodgers did a pretty good job against the Cowboys last year but I seriously think he's going to be another one of the big headed starting quarterbacks like Majkowski was....yeeeeshhh, no thank you. I think the fame of Rodgers being the starter quarterback position is already sinking in.........parties every Wednesday with the players and their spouses? I think that's going a bit too "La De Dah" far. He already strikes me as a person who has arrogant tendencies based on what I've seen and heard him say in interviews already. We don't need another Tony Romo in the NFL. Just my opinion folks.
Go away Brett...your time is up and you are sounding like a flip flopper again.
Brett;
To quote a great old song
"How can I miss you if you won't go away?"
Please - it's over. Go away.
southerners dont break their word , hes retired.
Jason:
Wow dude.......Farve IS PRO FOOTBALL........ I think a couple of guys would beg to differ, like Manning, Tomlinson, T.O., Romo, Urlacher, Brady, Moss just to name a few. Last time I checked, Farve (what's the name of his charity?) had one super bowl win. That's not setting the bar to high.
Granted, he's a first ballot hall of famer, but he's not PRO FOOTBALL! The game is so much larger than any one player.
No one said Brett did nothing for football, you said Farve IS PRO FOOTBALL! You must be a myopic Packer fan, work in a cheese plant, or head up the Farve kids zone website, or maybe all three!
Even you must admit the retire-unretire routine is getting tiresome. That is unless you enjoy slipping on a condum only to take it off because you have to go to the bathroom.
I guess what is comes down to to is what is the goal of competitive sports at any level. The answer of course is to win. Yes, Brett jumped the gun with his retirement, but give the guy a break. He has not been able to have a moment to himself in seventeen years. Now that he has been able to re-group he realizes he made a mistake. I guess the rest of you Favre bashers never made mistakes! Aaron Rodgers is not the quarterback of the future for the Packers. If their goal is to win games, thier best option is to let Brett lead the team. With so many players returning from last year's successful season it would be ridiculous to turn Brett away and see Rodgers fumble his way around until he gets ingured again (probably half way throug pre-season).
To see the look on Favres face and to see him jump up and down in such frenzied excitement when he threw a great pass or made a touchdown is absolutely priceless and noone can put a timeframe on that kind of passion for the sport that Brett had/HAS. He was never cocky about it like I've seen SO many other teams. He was just in it to win it, plain and simple. It's no wonder he broke down and cried on television when he announced his retirement. With the amount of passion that he had for the sport and giving it up when he knew that he probably could be playing for a while longer? It would be hard for me to hold it in like a man as well. I give him credit for being able to express his feelings like a man who has such deep emotion for the sport. The Packers need to let him come back if he wants back in. He deserves and they owe him that after all the passion he pumped into that team. Rodgers will just have to suck it up and deal with it.

Jason?
You really need to go drink a big glass of STFU!
Tom Brady has done more for football then Favre. I'll do the math for you- Brady 3 SB's, Favre 1 SB. Yes Favre has numerous NFL records, but will be broken when Manning and Brady hit 17 years in service like Farve.
And, the way it's going you're doing nothing for this thread!
Bottom line is FARVE can still play,he will now get his shot with nyj!
