DAILY DOMER: OCTOBER 16TH

Five questions I'd like to ask Charlie Weis if he were available to the media this week--but it's a bye week, and he isn't, so I'll just have to ask you:

1) Next year, when quarterback Dayne Crist is no longer a red-shirt, do you foresee playing him a series or two a game just to bring him along (and to keep him happy)?

2) What is the deal with defensive tackle Ian Williams? Last season, 45 tackles in just two starts (though he did appear in all twelve games). This season, 13 tackls in six starts. Williams is 12th on the team in tackles, and he has one fewer than Mike Anello, who only plays special teams.

3) If fullback Asaph Schwapp can go six games without getting a carry, why does he even bother working with the running backs when the team breaks off into its positional drills?

4) Are you going to put in a bubble screen play for Golden Tate or Michael Floyd, or is that just wishful thinking on my part?

5) What household chores does the wife have lined up for you this weekend?

The site collegefootballnews.com, a favorite destination for this internet scavenger, put out its Midseason All-America teams list earlier this week. A few observations:

--CFN named three full teams, and yet only one player from USC was mentioned. And it was not a defensive player. It was offensive lineman Jeff Byars. And he was placed on the 3rd team. Coach Carroll, I believe they're trying to tell you that you're doing an underwhelming job with this talent.

--Four of the players honored have already faced the Irish, and at least three of them should thank Notre Dame for their inclusion. Michigan State tailback Javon Ringer (201 yards) and a teammate, safety Otis Wiley (2 interceptions of Jimmy Clausen), were named to the first team. North Carolina linebacker Quan Sturdivant (pick for a TD against Clausen) was a 3rd-teamer. The fourth player named is Michigan defensive lineman Brandon Graham, a 3rd-teamer.

--Besides Byars, the Irish will line up against two more players this season who were named to the team: Pitt middle linebacker Scott McKillop, a 1st-teamer who has 52 tackles this season after leading the nation in tackles a year ago. And Boston College offensive lineman Mark Tennant, a 3rd-teamer.

-What about the Irish? Safety David Bruton (2nd on the team in tackles and a team-best 2 picks) was named to the 3rd team.

Listen, I don't want to say that I'm tough or anything, but that Mesa State lineman, Trevor Wikre, who had the tip of his pinky amputated as opposed to having surgery and missing the final season of his football career? I broke my right pinky in the second game of my senior year in high school (the quarterback of the opposing team was future Irish special teamer and national champion Steve Belles) and faced a similar quandary. Instead of having surgery, I simply told no one and taped the pinky to my ring finger the rest of the season. It remains crooked to this day (by the way, former pitcher David Cone has the same finger crooked, also the result of a high school sports injury). So, I'm just sayin', Rick Reilly, if you ever wanna do a piece on how much sportswriters love the game of football...

Are you a sucker for those "Death on the Mountain" stories that crop up in Men's Journal or Outside? I am. The former of the two has a captivating piece ("The Killing Peak") about last August's tragedy on K-2 in the Himalayas, where 11 climbers died in one day. Worth reading if you're into that stuff.

Yet another Happy Birthday wish to send out, and this is a biggie: Happy Birthday, Mom!

Seriously, the number of October birthdays is alarming.

Once, really early in a story, I pulled my left (spacing) thumb bad and was told to avoid short words entirely. They offered me some over-the-counter stuff -- I think it was Aleve -- but I needed a clear mind. Wound up shifting with the right thumb the rest of the story, and I imagine most readers didn't even pick up on it.

G.A., I feel your pain. I once ran into a closet wall in the dark, accidentally breaking my second toe (which is longer than my big toe). To this day, I cannot wear stilettos without wincing.
