FORECASTIONS

Here you go, your SuperSerious SuperSaturday Soothsaying:

Northwestern (6-2) at No. 17 Minnesota (7-1), Noon, ESPN2

Tyrell Sutton? Sutton? Sutton…..?” Not since Ferris Bueller took a day off will a suburban Chicago student be this missed by his classmates. The magic continues in the Twin Cities, as the GGs could actually reverse last season’s 1-11 record in ’08.

Josh Hartnetts 31, Zach Braffs 17

West Virginia (5-2) at No. 25 Connecticut (6-2), Noon

Color wars! It’s summer camp all over again as Brown (Donald Brown of U Conn, the nation’s leading rusher) battles White (Pat White of the Mountaineers). The ‘neers are 5-0 at home this season and 0-2 on the road.

            Insurance 27, Deliverance 25

Wisconsin (4-4) at No. 21 Michigan State (7-2), Noon, ESPN

Character win for Sparty last weekend in Ann Arbor, who keep their hopes for a Rose Bowl berth alive if they can pummel the Badgers this weekend. I’m sure there’s some archaic, arcane trophy these two play for when they meet, but I just lack the energy to care.

            S Helmets 29, W Helmets 21

No. 18 Tulsa (8-0) at Arkansas (3-5), 2 p.m.

You remember Gus Malzahn, right? Successful prep coach in Arkansas, heads to Fayetteville with his blue-chip QB, Mitch Mustain, then he and Mustain both pull a Steve Levy (“Get outta town!”) after just one season. Malzahn is now the offensive coordinator of the nation’s No. 1 scoring offense. The Golden Hurricane have a very slim chance for a BCS bowl berth, but an emphatic win against an SEC opponent would certainly aid their cause.

            Hogs 33, Lustrous Storms 28

Pittsburgh (5-2) at Notre Dame (5-2), 2:30 p.m., NBC

Mike Teel—Mike freakin’ Teel—threw six touchdown passes against the Panthers last week. Michael Floyd and Golden Tate cannot wait for kickoff. You gotta’ like Notre Dame on All Saints Day, no?

Lou Holtz 41, Mark May 30

No. 8 Florida (6-1) vs. No. 6 Georgia (7-1), 3:30 p.m., CBS

Matt Stafford has a rocket arm. Tim Tebow is Superman. Knowshon Moreno may have the brightest NFL future of any college tailback. Jeffery Demps is the fastest man at the college level. Let the fans in Gainesville and Athens stress out. The rest of us can just enjoy it.

            Tom Petty 33, R.E.M. 31

No. 15 Florida State (6-1) at Georgia Tech (6-2), 3:30 p.m., ABC

Bobby Bowden is currently two victories behind Joe Pa on the career wins list (381 to 379). If the Seminole coach is to have any chance of catching Penn State’s resident octogenarian, he must win today (the Nittany Lions have a bye) and keep hope alive for the ACC title game, which gives him a bonus game that the Big Ten school couldn’t have.

Tomahawk Chop School 17, Tomahawk Chop City 13

No. 1 Texas (8-0) at No. 7 Texas Tech (8-0), 8 p.m., ABC

The Longhorns have been on a month-long cattle drive of top ten foes. Do they have enough energy for one last giddyup?

Guns up! 36, Bummed Steers 35

Nebraska (5-3) at No. 4 Oklahoma (7-1), 8 p.m., ESPN

The Huskers have won two straight and took Texas Tech to overtime in Lubbock the week before that. New head coach Bo Pelini is a defensive guru, but Nebraska is averaging an impressive 33 points per game. They won’t pull off the upset, but they could make it interesting.

            Norman 42, Lincoln 21

No. 24 Oregon (6-2) at California (5-2), 3:30 p.m., ABC

Cal sophomore tailback Jahvid Best has taken more abuse this season than the foliage around Memorial Stadium. He suffered a stomach-emptying hit at Maryland and then a dislocated elbow versus Colorado State. Both schools are technically in a four-way tie for first in the Pac-10 (along with USC and Oregon State). The winner gets to keep its Rose Bowl dreams a little longer.

Adam Duritz 26, Faber College 23

Pre Nov 4th observation that the average American does not truly identify with either presidential candidate- not the issues, but the persons themselves.
