Goodell Shows Backbone Cowboys Can't
If the good folks in Texas thought that all Sunday's injuries were going to mitigate Commissioner Roger Goodell's decision-making on Pacman Jones, they got it wrong.
The Commish suspended Jones Tuesday thanks to the hotel skirmish with a guy whose job it was to keep the Pac out of trouble on October 8.
And while Cowboys owner Jerry Jones and Cowboys apologists tried to downplay the matter as a minor occurrence, they showed once again how adept they are at missing the point down there.
Public shoving matches between normal people happen, yes. For most, that would be aberrant and unqiue behavior.
A shoving match involving someone who's been involved with police 13 times since entering the league, been arrested six times and been told to keep his name out of the mouths of the police or face suspension is another matter altogether.
It is, for The Pacman, normal behavior and all those expecting him to behave with this chance were trying to suspend reality.
In a letter to the Cowboys and The Pacman, Goodell called it a "disturbing pattern of behavior and clearly inconsistent with the conditions I set for your continued participation in the NFL."
Good for Goodell who could have done nothing except tsk-tsk about Jones (no relation to the Cowboys owner). At least he treats the NFL as a business in which morals and ethics intrude. Consider that in the past two seasons he's taken both the Cowboys and Patriots - two of the most recognizable, successful and lucrative franchises - over his Commissionerly knee because of a lack of ethics and you see he's been the right guy for the job.
He keeps passing up on the easy thing to do the right thing.
Meanwhile, the Cowboys - who courted the serial drama their season's turned into - would do well to try and figure out where the entertainment stops and the football begins. But it's probably too late for that. What it won't be too late for is the wailing and gnashing of teeth of the Cowboys and the cement-headed segment of their otherwise decent fanbase. Habitual apologists defending a habitual offender. They were made for each other.

About this blog
Drilling deeply into the mantle layer of America's Passion, NBCSports.com's Tom Curran offers up quick hits and insights on all things NFL.
Why can't Senate suspend Goodell for secretly watching Spy-gate tapes and then destroying evidence?
This was absolutely the right move for the NFL. Pacman embodies a magnified version of every negative stereotype placed on pro athletes.
Goodell needs to take it a step further by making this a permanent ban. Adam Jones can go wither away in the CFL likes he deserves and the league won't miss a beat.
As one of the hardcore Cowboys fans down here, let me first say that not everyone that cheers for them are either apologists, or fans of some of the personnel decisions made by one Jerry Jones.
Four games is a pittance of what should be laid against Pacman, regardless of what it means to the team and our hopes for this year. Goodell should bury this guy UNDER the league office. If Pacman ever dons another uniform in the NFL, much less that of America's Team, it will be a real shame.
Crime should fit the punishment. One or two game suspension would be more in line with an offense that caused no bodily harm, property destruction or arrest warrants. Leave it to the hypocritical Goodell and media to use a sledgehammer to kill a mosquito. Tom Curran, you should know better...
One or two games would have been an appropriate suspension.....if this was a first or second offense. This bozo has been arrested 6 times in the 3 yrs he's been in the league, not to mention the other 7 times he didn't actually get arrested. He's on probation from his No Contest plea last year that resulted in his 2007 suspension. He doesn't learn. He's lucky he isn't bagging groceries in Warner's old job. I commend Goodell for cracking down on these "role models" behavior off the field.
Tom Landry must be rolling over in his grave....
COME OFF IT...HE SHOULDN'T HAVE BEEN LET BACK IN TO BEGIN WITH...THE COWBOYS KNEW WHAT THEY WERE GETTING INTO TO...WAIT UNTIL BRAD JOHNSON HAS TO THROW TO OWENS FOR 4 WEEKS...THE PACMAN SITUATION WILL EB EASILY FORGOTTEN WHEN THAT BIG MOUTH GETS GOING.
9ER FAN HAPPEN THAT OWENS LEFT
I am a Dallas Cowboy fan and I'm thrilled with the decision by Roger Goodell. There are a lot of fans in Dallas that are really tired of Jerry Jones hiring thugs. It brings a very unwanted reputation to our city and to our team.
The guy is a idiot. A tiger doesn't change his stripes, nor a leopard his spots. Jerry, it's time to get down the road.
IN THE MORTAL WORDS OF JIM ZORN REDSKINS COACH, HIP HIP HOORAY TO GOODELL.PACMAN WILL NEVER GET IT. JERRY JONES DOESN'T GET. HIS RESPONSE WAS 'PACMAN WAS DEVASTED', SO WHAT!!
YOU GIVE A MAN THE OPPORTUNITY TO COME BACK TO THE LEAGUE, TELL HIM TO BEHAVE OR ELSE, AND THIS MAN IGNORES IT ALL. HERES SOME ADVICE FOR JERRY, BUILD YOUR TEAM AROUND SELF REPSECTING GENTLEMAN, WHO OBEY LAWS,AND RESPECT OTHERS.
I can't understand why Jones didn't head this off. Surely he knew that Goodell wasn't going to take any more crap from PacMan. I'm a Cowboy fan and hope that he never puts on a Cowboy jersey again. He's a low-class punk, and frankly he hasn't been much of a player this year anyway.
Jerk, idiot, jackass & any other bad name. He get's a 2nd,3rd,& 4th chance,& then he screws up. His mother should kick his a$$.
The Cowboys didn't discipline Adam Jones because it would fly in the face of Jerry Jones' policy of hiring the most self-seeking, disruptive, formerly-talented players and coaches available (to wit: Deion Sanders, Terrell Owens, Adam Jones, Barry Switzer plus more). Jerry's lack of personal integrity blinds him to the foibles of others and causes him to repeat this mistake. I propose a new statistic - the FPS percentage. That stands for "Felons Per Squad". As long as Jerry is in Dallas, it will remain a good measure of the team's distraction level and operate inversely to the won/loss ratio. (This might be an excerpt from the 10 o'clock sports update in mid-September: "...the Cowboys FPS is up by 15% this year, so it looks like the Cowboys won't be in the playoffs...again.")

Dear Commissioner I am extremely disapointed at the fact that you let the media influence your decision on the suspension of Adam "Pacman" Jones. I thought we had finally got a commissioner that thought for himself and out of the dark ages of Paul Tagliabue. Was Adam Jones's incident really bad enough to warrant a four game suspension? Or are you afraid that we are creeping up on your New York Giants. You shouldn't let one Monday night football game motivate your decision, Clevland 35 Giants 14. Roy Williams first touchdown reception is dedicated to you Mr. Commiss...........
Adam Jones should have been removed from the NFL for life. Shame on the cowboys for hiring him. They should know better, then again they have TO and Jessica Simpson on their bench.
Pacman Jones, Can't believe he blew it again. I think this thug just needs to be outsted from the NFL. There shouldn't be a third time's a charm for this idiot!
I'm a Cowboy fan but I hope that PacMan never wears their jersey again. What was Jerry thinking? He must have known that Goodell wouldn't take this crap. PacMan hasn't been much of a threat this year anyway.
Pacman said nothing happened. The Bodyguard said nothing happened. The person who called the police didn't see anything happen, he only heard a commotion in the bathroom. When the police showed up, they decided that nothing happened. No charges were pressed, no one was detained.
I'd understand the suspension if something happened, if an arrest was made, if a complaint was filed, but none of this occurred. You don't suspend someone for doing nothing wrong. I can't believe all the small minded people who comment here that want to see this guys career ended for DOING NOTHING !!!
I hope there's someone out there who treat all of you the same way you want to see Adam treated, for the same reasons.
Doesn't Dallas now get a 5th round pick from the Titans with this suspension?
Jon,
They do get a 5th round pick from the Titans, and they don't have to send 6th rounder to Tennessee next year.
4 games?? Not enough! He should be gone for life! no respect, no self discipline, this is what happens when you take a thug and pay him way too much. All you clowns who say the punishment does not match the crime....get real, he has had way too many run in's with the law. how about 3 strikes your out for all these over paid athletes. Treat them like the criminals they are.
I am an old Niner fan, so as you can imagine, I have spent a lot of years not liking the Cowboys, mostly because they kept beating my team. However, the Cowboys fans deserve more from this guy for embracing him. What does he do in return, embarrass them and put them in the tough position of having to try to stick up for their team and not the man. Pac Man, as good as he is, probably is not well suited for the NFL. It is a real shame, but doctors and dentists get hooked on drugs, lawyers drink too much and so on and so forth. Just because a person is good at something, doesn't mean they should be allowed to do it. I actually feel bad for this guy because he repeatedly offends league policy and cannot seem to help himself. He needs serious help. He does not need to be further enabled. That is probably part of the problem. People looking the other way because of the talent. I worked with a lawyer who was recently disbarred and should have been a long time ago, but he was so talented, he was given much more leeway than many other lawyers would have been. As a result, he malpracticed, stole from his clients, and had no liability insurance. Talented or not, people were hurt because he was allowed to remain where he should not. The same goes for Pac Man. I wish the Cowboy fans well, they are loyal and deserve more than this.
Your head is full of cement Curran, Pacman issue aside. I could do a better job of sports reporting with both eyes closed and one ear open.
I agree with many people that the crime this time was not very major; however, Pacman has continuously gotten in trouble with the law. Football is his job. Think about it. What slightly respectable corporation would be willing to deal with a person, no matter how great of a worker, if he or she always gets in trouble with the law? Pacman has been given repeated opportunities to change, and Goodell is justified for suspending him. Pacman needs to learn that he's going to be banned for life if he doesn't straighten up.
My son Adam is the greatest thing to ever happen in Dallas and this is all a hoax to smear my boy's good name. Mr. Jerry Jones, no relation, didn't have him prosecuted because this is a personal matter that don't affect no one else, like he said to them reporters.
Kasey, thanks for the positive nod to the Cowboys and I always hated us having to play the Niners...especially in SF! I have been a fan of my team since the 60's and have seen a lot of great players come through Dallas and we've had our share of success. BUT, I am continually embarassed by Jerry Jones and the lengths he will go to to win. I can tell you that our city is devastated by Mr. Jones (Jerry)direction. Word around here is that this isn't the first offense...the others have been covered up. So, anyone who feels sorry for him, get over it...he's used up all this chances.
Mr. Rich-Mr. Villareal

This is why zero tolerance never works, and it is used, one more time, by a white man to put the heavy thumb of oppression on a non white man.
Oh, and I am white, by the way.
This so-called commissioner, with his so-called Codes of Moral Conduct (for fans and minons) is a control freak. Some day someone is going to punch him out like the Leahman (sp) chair got jaw smacked in the corporate gym.
Douche.
Falcons fan, born and raised in DFW
Ok, I don't want to stick up for Pacman, but since like three people mentioned his momma, what his momma should say, etc, it should be pointed out that his parents are DEAD.
"This is why zero tolerance never works, and it is used, one more time, by a white man to put the heavy thumb of oppression on a non white man."
First of all, the only person of any note who was oppressed by a white man via the "zero tolerance policy" was Bobby Knight and he's white. Second, nobody cares if you're white. Third, you're retarded. Pacman Jones would not be playing football if you race-baiters had your way and "zero tolerance" (whatever that means) was abolished; Pacman simply would not have been let back into the league.
Pacman is a moron - and Jerry Jones isn't far behind for giving this lowlife a paycheck. Playing in the NFL is a privilege, not a right. Maybe Pacman will figure that out once he's really working for a living...
If owners/managers would simply show some guts and take immediate and appropriate action the message would get out and these morons would disappear from the field and the news. The owners and players all need to get a clue.
Listen. It's simple as can be. Adam Jones has gotten by with just a slap on his wrists since he was at WVU. You can only use bad decision making a few times before you start being hel accountable. Alcohol in this young man's life has often led to disregard and violence. How many people have to be hurt because of foolishness and poor decisions before he and others "get it"?
For those of you who say this punishment doesn't fit the crime... you must have been asleep or on some mind altering drug binge. Godell made a way for Jones to come back in the league under the conditions of keeping his "nose clean"... with a heavy influence of being alchohol free which leads to almost all of Jones' issues. The shoving match with the bouncer that "no one saw" can be pushed aside, the fact that there is a no tolerance when it comes to booze trumps any need for witnesses.
The Cowboys are soon to follow in the steps of the Bengals and Raiders. Image and perception are everything... sooner or later the "bad boy" image will catch up to you and it is hard to shake that.
Owens is a cancer who has thrown every QB he has played for under the bus and fractured every lockerroom he has been in. Jones shouldn't be in the league on the strength that his off the field antics have contributed to a man being paralyzed from the waist down (even Ray Lewis learned from his mistake and has stayed way under the radar). Being a Bears fan, I hate Tank leaving... but again... how many chances is someone supposed to get (but I am glad that he is staying out of trouble for the time being)?
Jones is doing his best rendition of ruining a proud franchise in the mold of Al Davis. Good luck Cowboy fans... better you all than the rest of us :P
I wish someone would offer me a job that paid millions and all I had to do was keep my nose clean. Jerry Jones has turned this team into the Jerry Springer Show. Jones would hire from prison's death row if it meant a Super Bowl Championship. Tex and Landry were so much an asset to their team and the NFL. They had class. It's ashame it is now a circus act.
The Cowboys didn't suspend him themselves because then they wouldn't have received the fifth round pick from the Titans. One of the stipulations of the trade was, if Jones was suspended by the league for even one game, the Titans would compensate the Cowboys with a fifth round pick.
Try doing a little research before you write an article. Based on some of the articles I see journalists producing these days it would be a novel idea.
I think everybody is missing the point here. The question should be: how does T.O. feel about being upstaged and out-publicized?
Seriously, with Brad Johnson throwing to him next Sunday, this is just one more thing that's going to drive Owens stark-raving mad...
Adam Jones is walking Disaster, he is Lawrence Phillips all over again.
He doesnt get that its a privledge to play in the NFL, not a right. He also doesn't seems to have any compassion for people, or even any common sense.
It was just a matter of time before he self distructed !
The guy is a loser !
I wish he would get banned!
Jerry Springer should do en episode with The Cowboys, Pac man, and all the other misfits, felons, and they have on that team.
It would rank higher than the Super Bowl
Way to go Roger.
This shouldn't be looked at punishing PacFarse Jones but as slapping Jerry Jones upside the head for turning the Cowboys into a high-class version of the Oakland Raiders.
Terrell Owens (more losses, more mouth); Tank Williams (train wreck in progress); PacFarse Jones (turn to your other right please); and now Roy Williams (anyone see him kick at a catchable ball vs. Chicago?). They're now "America's Joke", not team.
The Cowboys are the most overrating and underachieving team in the NFL. They are destined to become the Greatest Team That Never Was. Fantastic talent only overshadowed by their marketing.
At least they have hot cheerleaders.
He's not that great, so just get rid of him. Once a thug, always a thug. He is an embarressment to the Cowboys and the NFL. In a year do you really think anyone will even remeber who Pac Man Jones is or was?
Hats off to the commish!!
The Cowboys should put PacMan on the M-U-P (mentally unable to perform) list.
Maybe I'm wrong, but isn't this also a business move by the Cowboys? If they had suspended him instead of the NFL, would the draft pick deal with the Titans not have reversed back? That helped them make the trade for Roy Williams so that ultimately they only lost their first round pick. At least Jones (publicly) stated he understood the NFL decision. The Cowboys gave the guy another chance, and he blew it. I'm not defending him at all because he does appear to be impaired or challenged in some way, but I'm not casting stones either.
Jerry Jones has done a great job of imitating Al Davis by hiring the troubled, castoff thugs from the rest of the NFL. His actions have irreparably tarnished the Dallas image created by the great teams of the 60s and 70s.
How many times does this guy get warning or slap on the wrist. Let a normal everyday Joe have this many run ins with the law, not only would he not have a job, he would be in jail...NUFF SAID
He that is without sin let him cast the first stone. You all will be held accountable for every idle word.
Come on folks!
Step up and say it!
Come on!
Say it!
The PAC is Black!
There, don't all of you feel better?
If the Pac was a 6'6" Blonde, Blue eyed white QB, the ALL of you would be asking for the Commish's head?
RAD
Understandibly, most people seem to agree that this jack*** needs to go. I am surprised that a few misinformed fringe members of our society still stick up for him. Here's the deal, the NFL is not a court of law, it is a place of employment. Holding a job is a privelege, not a right. If I had this moron's track record and got involved in a "minor" incident at work, as a reasonably intelligent person, I would understand that I probably wouldn't get the benefit of the doubt. For those few that defend him, good luck raising your own incorrigable brats and turning them into productive members of the community.
If I remember correctly, part of Jones' No Contest plea was that he would abstain from Alcohol use. Follow that with part of the reinstatement deal was to follow ALL of the conditions of the No Contest plea. So, if he had ONE DRINK he broke the Commissioner's rules and deserves to be suspended.
this guy is not very intelligent... first of all to compare the cowboys playing pacman to the spygate scandal of the patriots is rediculous.
He has 4 (FOUR) career interceptions. WTF?!? who cares where he goes to suck next?
You Cowboy fans that think it the Commish over reacted should really open your eyes...Everyone knew that this would happen...and besides the Commish told him to "Stay out of Trouble." Last time I checked, punching your body guard (while going to the bathroom...sick) is not staying out of trouble. He was given not second, third, but like 14th opportunity to be a decent role model and, like before, FAILED!! He should not have been let back in the NFL in the first place. If it was any other team (other than Dallas) they would have never reinstated him!!
Not to worry, Jerry Jones has his eyes on another felon- Mike Vick!
Thug owners breed thug players!
Pacman, I hope he is out for life, a man given the chance to play football at this level and earn that type money who can't keep his act together doesnt deserve it, plan and simple he is a thug. I'm a life long Cowboy fan and I don't wanta see him back in a cowboy uniform. He hasnt shown that much talent anyway after his lay off.
Since there seem to be those who want to turn this into a black and white issue, lets do that.
1. Pacman Jones has a documented history (in black and white on paper no less) of trouble.
2. Pacman Jones' history of trouble led hime to suspension from the NFL.
3. Pacman Jones was reinstated in the NFL with SPECIFIC instruction to keep out trouble. This contract was also in black and white and agreed to by both parties.
4. The POLICE were called to an incident involving him and another man in a restroom. Read that again, the POLICE were called. Regardless of what the Pacman and his associate say, their activity created a need for employees of the hotel to call the POLICE. That is not some minor disagreement.
5. Pacman violated the black and white terms listed in his reinstatement agreement.
6. Pacman is subsequently suspended, not by his own team of course, but by the NFL itself, because why should they do it and lose the 5th round draft pick compensation from the Titans?
Pacman is where he is based on HIS decisions to violate the BLACK AND WHITE of the contract he signed to be reinstated. For those of you who want to bring race into this, keep it up...it is your type who keep racism alive and well, especially on such a clear subject as this. Now go spread your cancerous filth somewhere else, it has been fully debunked here and is not wanted.
Ok haters...including the supposed 'Boys fans and Mr. Curan...how many players out there get by with way more than that and never get a 4 game suspension...get real...if it wasn't the Cowboys this league would be about as exciting and profitable as minor league baseball...the Cowboys ARE the NFL...that's why we're even talking about this...if this was someone in say, Cinci or Carolina, no one would even care!
what makes an athelete a role model? their athletic abilities! i only care about players on feild actions. it's funny every week a player gets into a shoving match with another. by Goddells standard every time this happen the players should be suspended!!!!
