PATERNO AND PALIN
Apparently, Todd Palin is here today, shaking hands outside the stadium. And we're still at least a month away from snowmobiling season here in central Pa.
*************
Joe Paterno is the head coach at Penn State (a sentence, by the way, that has been factually correct my entire life and quite possibly yours as well). Anyway, "pater" is also Latin for father, as you may know. When you coach at the same school for 43 seasons, it isn't uncommon that you may come across a few second-generation players. In fact, the current Nittany Lion roster contains seven players whose dads played for JoePa:
1) Safety Tyler Ahrenhold....his dad, Frank, played defensive tackle here from 1969-71 and for two memorable seasons with the Pittsburgh Steelers (1973-74)
2 & 3) Linebacker Michael Mauti and wide receiver Patrick Mauti, whose dadRich, played WR here in 1975-76 and for eight seasons in the NFL.
4) Tight end Mickey Shuler, whose namesake dad played the same position here from 1975-77 and for 14 seasons in the NFL, mostly with the J-E-T-S JETS JETS JETS!
5) Linebacker Nathan Stupar, whose dad, Stephen, played here from 1976-79, as did three uncles, including Jeff Hostetler (who finished up at West Virginia before a long NFL career)
6) Offensive guard Stefen Wisniewski, whose dad, Leo, and uncle, Steve, were linemen here. Leo played four seasons with the Colts in the early '80s.
7) And finally there is freshman tailback Joe Suhey. Yes, his dad is Matt Suhey. The Suheys go back here even further than JoePa. Joe's great grandfather, Bob Higgins, was a Penn State All-American who played here in 1915 and 1919, then went on as the head coach here from 1930-1948. One of his players was Steve Suhey, who wound up becoming his son-in-law when Steve married Ginger Higgins back in the time when people named their daughters Ginger. Steve and Ginger had three sons who played for JoePa, most notably Matt, the star of their early 80s teams.
As if that weren't enough to find an angle for a piece on Joe Suhey, he also played high school basketball on the same team as Michael Jordan's sons.
