Tebow At The Next Level
In a nice one-on-one with The Sporting News, defending Heisman Trophy winner Tim Tebow from the University of Florida indicated he'll consider going to the NFL after this his junior season.
The pertinent parts...
When asked if he'd be back with the Gators for his senior season in 2009, Tebow said, "I can't say for sure, no."
Elaborating, he added, "If the season ends up going good and I'm blessed to have an opportunity to go play in the NFL pretty early, I think that's something, just trying to be prudent and wise about it, it's something you have to look at."
I spoke to an AFC scouting director (one whose team is not in the market for a QB) about Tebow's prospects at the next level. He indicated that, while Tebow doesn't fit the physical mold of a franchise quarterback, his unique skill set makes him a very intriguing prospect.
And while that may seem a slap at Tebow's ability, it shouldn't be. Those seemingly irreplaceable franchise quarterbacks are a dying breed. There's Brady and Manning, sure, but there are also a host of teams that have shown in the past few seasons that the position can have some flexibility to it.
My source said that, the way the position's progressing and offenses are evolving, there may be room for a little platooning in the future with the right kind of changeup quarterback. It's not unheard of - the Steelers got plenty of good plays out of Kordell Stewart in his "Slash" days.
And the proliferation of spread offenses could make a player with the run/pass ability of Tebow that much more intriguing.
"This is what I think," said my source. "He's a big, strong competitive guy, a good athlete with a strong arm and I think he does have the ability to play the position well. The spread offense is going through the league like a spider web and I think you'll find more and more guys like Tebow who can really do some damage in that offense. He's a little unorthodox as a passer but he has some savvy to him. He's a talented kid and if a team takes him, some offensive coordinator will find a way to maximize his skills."
Would Tebow be a top-10 pick with his skill set when most teams look for the upright and predictable pocket passer/game manager types.
"Michael Vick was unique and Vince Young was unique. A team will have to see something in him they feel really excited about. They'd have to have the creativity and vision to essentially take him and create a series of plays for him a package or an entire offense."
My source mentioned Vince Young's role with the Titans going forward and compared it to what Tebow might wind up in.
"Tennessee has a major investment with Young and he's a talented guy but they're playing well with Kerry Collins. So why not create a series of plays for Young to change the pace of the game and put pressure on defenses. Look at the success Miami is having with Ronnie Brown (in the Wildcat direct snap offense). Maybe you have a pure passer as your starting quarterback but why not, if you have Tim Tebow, bring him in for a whole different package? You'd see defenses saying, 'Uh-oh, here comes Tim Tebow off the bench, now what are we looking for here? He adds versatility and would give an opponent so many more things to plan for."
