Cowboys Owner Says He's 'Disappointed'
EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. - Cowboys owner Jerry Jones gave a stark evaluation of his team after Sunday's 35-14 loss to the Giants.
"I'm not looking through rose-colored glasses as to where we might be at the last game of the year whether we're watching it on television or playing in it," said Jones, a star-shaped diamond stickpin affixed to his lapel being the only thing with a little shine to it in a morose postgame locker room.
Speaking for a long stretch to waves of reporters, Jones said his 5-4 Cowboys can't expect injured quarterback Tony Romo to be a cure-all when he returns from his broken finger.
"Romo can't hit the ground running as if he's been out here completely healthy and be coordinated with Roy Williams, Terrell Owens and (Jason) Witten. He can't be as effective as he could have been if he'd been playing straight through. That's gonna be a real challenge. But we can be a better team."
Asked if he was shocked by the Cowboys dip since a 4-1 start, Jones said, "It's disappointment. I'm disappointed we've got the uphill battle we've got. I'm not in shock by any stretch of the imagination. I'm disappointed and I know it's gonna be harder for us to get where we want to go now that we're 5-4 than if we were 6-3. But I know things that happened to our team can happen to all the other teams. A lot of teams deal with them and do them well. The team we just played dealt with their challenges last year and won the world championship. And that's the role model of what you hope for."
Jones said, if he were guaranteed the playoffs and had to give up trying to win the division, he'd take that trade. He added, "But I'm a gambler."
Jones also said he was happy with the effort he's seen from his team.
"Very (pleased)," he stressed. "Later in the game I saw a tired defensive football team out there. I've seen that before at all junctures when you're getting run out. And I've seen when you get behind the other team put all the pressure in the world on and make you look like dogs."
I asked him about the play on which rookie corner Mike Jenkins backed away from contact as New York's Derrick Ward scored on a 17-yard burst.
Jones saw it unfold and added, "On any play, I don't ever make a decision just on the face of it. We'll obviously look at that play and look at it hard. I saw the one that he scored on too (a first half interception return for a score). I'll take one for the other."

you need to go out and get hall you
There are several things I wish I could advise Jerry Jones on. DeAngelo Hall can not go to another team. His idol is Deion, and while Pacman is going through his thing, DeAngelo can start immediately, under Deion's mentoring. The offense is need of Anquan, we need to give the Cardinals a 1st & 2nd round draft pick for Boldin! T.O. can not afford 2 be double & triple covered anymore. In the NFL today you need DB coverage and WR's that can pass up DB coverage. You need three quality starting CB's and three quality starting WR's. The fourth & fifth CB & WR should be a good 2nd stringer for any of the 32 teams, due to possible injuries of the 1st 3 starting CB's & WR's. If Dallas had T.O., Anquan, & Roy, with Crayton as 4th WR, things would work. If they had Newman, Henry, & DeAngelo, with Pacman as 4th CB things would work. Now if they do not draft a QB, I would get Alex Smith from the Niners, since they are probably going to get Warner from the Cards to be with his ex-coach and offensive coordinator next year; or opt for Michael Vick if he gets reinstated; or just get Jake Plummer out of retirement & let him teach & learn from Romo. They play the same game anyway, and Jerry Jones has a way of bringing people out of retirement. Although, would be nice to see Emmitt, Deion, and Troy, put on the pads again, and stack up some stats as backups, I will never push Michael or Moose to come back due to their injuries. I wish Troy would be their QB coach, Emmitt their RB coach, Michael their WR coach, Moose their Special Teams coach, Novacek thier TE coach, Charles Haley their Defensive Line coach, Norton their LB coach, Deion as their CB coach, and Darren Woodson as their Safety coach. Jerry needs to get back to basics on the tradition of the team. Roger Staubach, Danny White, Tony Dorsett should also be involved in somehow and someway.
PLEASE DIRECT JERRY JONES IN GETTING DeANGELO HALL, THEY ARE IN DESPERATE NEED OF A CB HELP.
COWBOYS WILL MAKE IT TO THE SUPER BOWL, AS I TOLD EVERYBODY IN THE WORLD, AS LONG AS INJURIES, SUSPENSIONS, AND SELFISHNESS DOES NOT PLAY ANY ROLES. OBVIOUSLY, THIS HAS NOT BEEN THE CASE, BUT UNLESS THE TEAM LIVES WITH THE PAIN, WITHOUT THE ILLEGAL DRUGS TO COVER UP THAT PAIN, AS MOST NFL PLAYERS DID IN THE PAST. ANY GREAT TEAM WILL BE WHERE THEY ARE LAST PLACE IN A DIVISION. YOU CAN ADD ALL THE GREAT PLAYERS TO A TEAM, BUT WITHOUT PRACTICE, COORDINATION, BELIEVE IN ONE ANOTHER, AND THE WILL TO SUCCEED NO MATTER THE SITUATION YOU WILL ALWAYS REMAIN IN LAST PLACE. IF YOU ARE A JOE MONTANA, STEVE YOUNG, TROY AIKMAN, ROGER STAUBACH, DAN MARINO, TOM BRADY, TONY ROMO, JAKE PLUMMER, PAT TILLMAN, OR THAT STEELER BALD HEAD GUY ON FOX, NO MATTER WHO YOU PLAYED WITH YOU WILL WIN OR AT LEAST IT SHOWED THAT YOU GAVE YOUR HEART & SOUL TO THE GAME & YOU GAVE IT YOUR ALL TO WIN EVERY GAME NO MATTER HOW MUCH THEY PAID YOU.
