NOV 5 NO. 1s: BAMA, OBAMA
So many of my predictions so often fail to pan out ("The Love Guru is Oscar gold!" "Washington will shock the world and beat (Team Name Here)" ) that I, like you, have lose faith in them. But a month ago I got one correct, predicting that in the first week of November we'd have Bama at No. 1 and Obama as president-elect.
Although the former senator from Illinois almost blew it on Monday evening by advocating, in his interview with Chris Berman---let's take a moment and get our heads around that concept, shall we? The next president's last national televised interview as a regular citizen was with the guy who gave us Bert "Be Home" Blyeven--for a playoff in college football. I defer to President-elect Obama's ken on almost all policy matters, but in this situation, let's remember that this is a man who graduated from Columbia the same year in which the school began its 44-game losing streak.
There was a lot worth watching on television last night: historic moments from the Arizona Biltmore in Phoenix (located just one mile east of my high school) and Grant Park in Chicago (located just 1,762 miles east of my high school). And I'm sure the Chicago Bulls are delighted with the Obama women this morning, don't you think?
Still, one of my favorite moments came from The Daily Show/Colbert Report broadcast. As hosts John Stewart and Stephen Colbert sat at their anchor desk, Larry Wilmore (billed as the show's "Senior Black Correspondent") approached the set with a tape measure.
"What are you doing?" Stewart asked.
"Whatever I want," replied Wilmore.

To wit, we've been bombarded by pundits throughout the electoral process. So much so, I thought I should find out what a pundit is. Wiki says it originates from the Hindu term pandit, or someone who offers counsel to dignitaries. Fast forward to today: John Stewart and Stephen Colbert pan the pundits. Does that make them pandit pundits?
I must say seeing all the people in Chicago, New York city, and other cities in the U.S., (in what was the largest gathering of people that I have ever seen), reminded me of people in foreign countries coming together to celebrate, after the fall of an evil dictator. Give people HOPE and you give people FREEDOM. I couldn't put my finger on what was different until I noticed today while out with Republicans and Democrats alike that I was still looking around to guard my words when talking to fellow Dems. I then realized, how much this past administration had intimidated my freedom of speech, regarding my right to discuss issues, etc. I had allowed myself to be intimidated by the "fear mongering" of the Bush administration. If I said something regarding the Iraq War, then "I wanted our Country to fail". NO MORE! I feel liberated from a repressed regime and I don't have to fear. No more whispers, no more fears....Halleluiah! CHANGE IS HERE! I think it will take us awhile to slowly come out of our shells to speak freely once again. United we Stand, Divided we certainly will fall! Thank God for Democracy! Thank God for Barack Obama.
My 5-year-old son, filling out a mock ballot last month, had two boxes next to the initials "J.M." and "B.B." I told him that I could figure out John McCain, but who was the other?
Barocko Bama, he told me.
Mr. Bama, I should point out, quite ominously won the voting at Sand Pine Elementary (electoral votes: 0) on Monday, though my son reminded me that the national election would still take place the next day.
Great article John about all the close losses, but one correction. We did not get offered nor accept the Cotton Bowl bid until after the loss to BC. The scuttlebutt was that if we had won that game there would be a rematch of the FSU game in the Fiesta Bowl. After the loss they didn't feel it had the same appeal and we got sent to Dallas and FSU went to Miami to play Nebraska, who I recall only had one loss as well. I was a junior at ND at the time so I remember it like it was yesterday...unfortunately.
