SEASON'S BEATINGS

Merry Christmas, everyone. Enjoy.

‘Twas the night before Christmas,

When all through the den,

The plasma was tuned to the ESPN,

The fade route was hung by the pylon with care,

In hopes that young Golden soon would be there,

The O-line was lit as if by a fuse,

With visions of blocking for Allen, or Hughes,

And Charlie on crutches, not unlike Tiny Tim,

Though his face not so pale, and his eyes not so grim,

Joined by Chuck Jr., his son now a teen,

Two Weis men from the east, a nativity scene,

On a Hawaiian island, Notre Dame is marooned,

Give thanks in green jerseys they are not festooned,

The voice on the tube, it did give quite a scare,

We wanted Pat Haden, but got Andre Ware,

While up in the press box, scribes scatter like mice,

No, that isn’t Santa, it’s a lei’d Charlie Weis,

When, what to my half-drunken gaze should arrive,

Than the Domers are gaining plus yards on a dive,

With a little-used halfback, and now he is scorin’,

Poor Pops--too much eggnog—in the corner is snorin’,

Then Clausen broke huddle, while Gramps he broke wind,

And as Jimmy called names, I sat and listened:

“On Rudolph, on Duval, on David, on Tate,

Let’s put positive spin on the season ’08!

Run routes with a fervor; please give it your all,

And, do me a favor, just don’t drop the ball.”

Like ravenous orphans when at table do sup,

The crazed Irish defense did bark,“Crank me up!”

With the speed of eight reindeer the 'backers were blitzin',

While Corwin did send nearly all of his Smiths in,

Then behind the safety young Golden did go,

Intent on not hearing, “That’s ten in a row.”
Bowl losses, that is, for they all knew the score,

N.D. hadn’t won one since Jan. ’94:

Buffs, Buckeyes and Beavers, the latter school twice,

Had helped forge a record so naughty, not nice,

An ACC trio extended the drought,

Plus two to the Tigers, and both were a rout,

But tonight, in Oahu, ‘gainst placider climes,

Look, Ma, in the end zone: a touchdown for Grimes!

And when Armando returned a kick all the way,

The children, all ages, were merry and gay,

Who knew that this school could provide us such mirth,

On the eve of the date that its namesake gave birth?

And when it was over, the scoreboard proclaim:
Hawaii 21; 49, Notre Dame,

49 points? In a bowl? That’s a first,

For the men of South Bend, who of late have seem cursed,

Or at least apathetic, uninspired, or lame,

It was as if they’d forgot who they are: Notre Dame!

But tonight on the shores of the 50th state,

Where brides and Barack often go to vacate,

Some pride was restored, and hope came alive,

That next year we may crack the ol' Top 25,

And Charlie was happy, that much you could see,

He needed a win near as much as a knee,

Back home in our p.j.’s, we readied for sleep,

With grins as we thought of the ’09 two-deep,

While out past the ocean, where honeymooners play,

Charlie opened the presser with, “Fire away!”

Then he boarded a plane, this descendant of Knute,

Saying, “Merry Christmas to all, now I’m off to recruit!”

As a father still paying off the four years of his Domer '08 I thank you for putting a big Christmas grin on my face. The past four years of numerous ND football trips make last night worthwhile. Remember, God, Country, Notre Dame and Stanford Hall. Go Irish

Such a knack for the vernacular...Buffs, Beavers and Buckeyes, oh my!

Oh, Please. ND beats a bad 7-6 WAC team and it inspires these delusions of grandeur. ND wins a bowl game, better get them into the top 10 for next season. This should make me happy since the irish hopes can be crushed again next year.

no dilusions of grandeur, just a glimmer of hope, and sometimes that is all that is needed. Good work John.

Ramblin,

Going on an ND blog with your hopes for their demise. Merry Christmas to all.

Well done Walters. Irish played a great game. To someone like Ramblin - to say Hawaii is a bad WAC team - well its obvious he never saw them play - period. Living in WAC land, I saw them once live and 2 times on tv this season. They were good and certainly better than UNC, Syracuse, Navy, Michigan State amongst others on the ND Sked. They ran into a block wall in the Hawaii bowl. Ramblin can cry into his beer since the team he despises most WON WON WON.

We wanted Pat Haden??????? The Irish Hater himself?????? I'll take Andre Ware anyday.
Good job IRISH!!!! The best christmas present i've gotten in awhile!!!!

Well it only took 15 years and 9 opponents for the domers to win a bowl game. I wouldn't get all giddy domers, the only team you beat with a winning record this year was Navy, you lost to every ranked team you played and your running game is non existent. Very easy to defend against a one dimensional offense.

Why do you get blown out by teams that are athletic and have speed, unlike Hawaii that has nothing but west coast rejects and juco players that can't get a look at any Pac 10 school.

Typical domer who thinks another alledged top 10 recruiting class will get them ranked- think again domers, think again!

Why do people who so called don't like ND come on ND blogs to hate on the team! Get a life haters!!!

ND will never get credit for beating anyone from the haters, that's just the way it is. Just enjoy this win Irish fans, because it was pretty sweet. To me this is a glimpse of the future now that we have a solid core of underclassmen in the program that are only going to mature and be even better as sophomores and juniors next year with help from another solid incoming freshman class. Recruiting has to be consistant year in, year out so that we don't experience the below par years like last year and this year. Expect big things next year and beyond if Weis gets this O-line rolling, the O-line is the key.

Go Irish '09!!

Favorite lines from my favorite sports scribe:

"Two Weis men from the east..."

"It’s a lei’d Charlie Weis..."

"Then Clausen broke huddle, while Gramps he broke wind..."

"He needed a win near as much as a knee..."

The excellence of the syntax is matched only by the spirit of the sentiment.

Go Walters!

"Haters"???

Making comments against ND is now a hate-crime?

Maybe next they'll classify "Dome-a-phobia" as a disease!

Not sure if this is paranoia, hubris, or both but you gotta love it.

I'm only disappointed because watching ND get stomped around the holidays was getting to be as much of a tradition as watching "It's a Wonderful Life"

Good luck guys!
