Shanahan To Chiefs...If So, Why So?
Trying to to ferret out information on this Friday night about Mike Shanahan. Is he truly a candidate for the Chiefs head coach job as ESPN reports? Or is he more likely to be named head of Housing and Urban Development than Chiefs chief as Adam Schefter of NFL.com and NFL Network insists?
While I ferret, I wonder for both sides...why would anyone consider this?
More so do I wonder about the Chiefs. Hiring coaches for a career victory lap does...not...work. Unless said coach's name is Parcells. And even then it only works to a point.
Besides the fact recycling legendary coaches is a losing proposition in virtually every instance its been employed, more confounding is why Scott Pioli would EVER want to bring Shanahan aboard.
Pioli just stepped away from the kind and permissive hand he labored under (Bill Belichick's...the two men were buds). He's going to now hire someone with whom he has no direct working relationship (Shanahan). A man who is accustomed to having his way in Denver. Seems pretty far-fetched.
So too for Shanahan. Wouldn't he rather take a week or 52 off and let Pat Bowlen pay him for his relaxation? That'd give the 56-year-old a chance to catch up with his kids, one of whom recently graduated college, the other (Kyle) is the Texans offensive coordinator. And why would he want to launch himself onto the sidelines for a third AFC West franchise (Raiders, Broncos and - supposedly - Chiefs), especially one that may or may not be good in a four-year span and one that doesn't spend with the drunken sailor proficiency that Shanahan would demand.
Dubious. .

About this blog
Drilling deeply into the mantle layer of America's Passion, NBCSports.com's Tom Curran offers up quick hits and insights on all things NFL.
To think that the Chiefs organization would actually be considering Shanahan for this position is absurd. Shanahan proved capable because he had a vetted team with a strong quaterback (Elway) at the helm. Kansas City does not have such a team as it stands. There is promise in the youth of the Chiefs, but it would not be well served by Shanahan's coaching style. Not to mention the fact that fans won't buy into Shanhan.
Chief's games have been characterized as having a college-like atmosphere. Simply put, Shanahan is viewed as the enemy in Kansas City. If selected, Chiefs fans would welcome him with jeers rather than cheers. These fans will not stand by while the enemy attempts to take the reigns of our beloved organization.
Why doesn't it make sense? First let's start with some of the obvious reasons...1) Shanahan knows the AFC West as well as anyone 2) Shanahan was a dominant coach when he was just that..A coach. When he tried to take over the role as GM and coach, he spread himself too thin 3) A chance for Shanahan to whip up twice a year on the team that just gave up on him 4) A chance to re-unite with his old buddy Gailey
Now for a couple of not so obvious reasons...1) The trend in the NFL is to go with the new hot name on the coaching list..(see Josh McDaniels)...8 of the last 10 Super Bowl winning coaches are re-hired coaches with experience. 2) What a perfect situation for Shanahan. Pioli is used to working with Belichick in New England. He obviously doesn't have any problem working with a strong minded head coach. 3) The Chiefs have some strong young talent and the #3 pick in the draft and play in the weak AFC West. They are poised for a quick turn around.
All in all I think a marriage between Shanahan and the Chiefs makes perfect sense...maybe he can even teach them how to defend against that dang bootleg....
As a Bolts fan, this is a worst possible scenario, for the reasons noted above...plus Shanny will love beating the Bolts who he has grown to hate and the two franchises that fired him (he'll get two shots a year at each). The chiefs become the likliest candidate for Miami/Atlanta like turnarounds if they can find a legit guy to run that D.
Couldn't be a better place for Shanny to stoke his competitive fires, I like their chances for 8-8 or better in 2009 with Shanny at the helm. The D is what concerns me which is the situation Shanny left, minus the uber talented Cutler.
I don't think Parcells is the only coach to become successful with another team. How about Mike Holmgren turning around the once woeful Seahawks and turning them into an annual playoff team with a castoff quarterback? Shanahan in KC could do the same thing in a division that is a shell of its former self with only two semi-worthy competitors at the moment. His west coast offense could be a good fit with a team that is seeking its identity and has plenty of salary cap room to make some moves to bring players in as well as high draft picks.
Hey guys,
Thanks for the comments and back and forth. Good points. And yours, Charlie, on Holmgren is well-taken. But the fact remains, recycled coaches who FAILED (Belichick, Dungy, Gruden) are the ones who succeed the second time around. Shanahan already proved his acumen by winning Super Bowls after being fired by the Raiders.
The guys who win their first time around -Jimmy Johnson, Mike Ditka, Hank Stram, Joe Gibbs, George Seifert, Holmgren, Dan Reeves - leave and then return have never won a Super Bowl on their second time around.
Go young and hungry, I believe. These playoffs proved it.
It's ludicrous to just assume that since a history of coaches who got fired and then won later on means Shanny would have success. Each situation has to be taken on its merits.
I agree, Shanny should take at the very least a year off and recharge the batteries. He's certainly a smart coach, but the Broncos didn't quit on him after a couple of years. He has 1 playoff win in 10 years. This isn't the late 90's anymore.
He had 10 years and never got a defense decent enough to win anything. His only chance is to be put in the coach-only role. Only then can the scenario be different. I only wonder if that were the case why he never accepted that in Denver.
Shanny, spend some time with your family. Recharge the batteries. Is Kansas City such a great situation NOW that you have to take the job? All you have to work with is a sagging Larry Johnson. What else is there right now?
Ah, well. I wish him luck. But, please, for every coach that got fired and THEN one a title, I can name 100 coaches who continued to lose. Stop!
I wished they would have kept Herm for one more year, then went balls to the wall after Cowher.
All over Shanahan again, huh Curran!
Yes, you are a ferret. In fact, you have all of the ferret-like characteristics necessary for the job of trying to find out nothing.
You sound like a charter NFL Owners sycophant club. Your constant criticisms of accomplished coaches smacks of petty envy more than journalistic investigation.
You write from the hip and wear your emotions on your sleeve. Of course, we should expect no less than this drivel from a second-rate hack.
"Career victory lap"? You talk like the dude is 80 years old.
"Wouldn't he rather take a week or 52 off"? You don't know much about the guy at all it seems.
Pioli hiring Shanahan would be like my wife hiring a super model to be the nanny.
Only the guys in the neighborhood would be happy.
I still think Shanahan should go to the San Diego, Chargers. San Diego has the best climate in the USA and they have the money to pay him what he wants. Norv will be gone next year along with A.J. Smith, the biggest loser in all the NFL. Perhaps it's not possible being that the owner of the Chargers has an IQ of -120.
i dont care whose kansas city coach i just want then to be good but cohwer needs 2 go to kc

good
It seems to me it is very difficult to find a nice coach. As for me, I'm inclined to think that the best coaches are those who are not yet popular. Well, when they got popular and get large saleries they relax and do not work as well as it was in the past. Such is my observation.
Best wishes from Violet http://www.mp3hunting.com

Well, I have no idea, either...but seems like you already have the answer...
I never knew about this.
I’m not much into reading, but somehow I got to read many articles in your webpage.
Well, what can say? This issue is very broad. I will stay tune on this blog site.

It is really intriguing that Michael Edward Shanahan the 28th and current head coach of the Washington Redskins of the National Football League. Shanahan also holds the title of Vice President of Football Operations with the Redskins, giving him full control over player personnel with the team is becoming and turning into a Chief.
I’ve been visiting your blog for a while now and I always find a gem in your new posts.
Thanks for sharing.
That is some inspirational stuff. Never knew that opinions could be this varied. Thanks for
