CHIEFS GOT VRABEL AND CASSEL FOR A SECOND-ROUNDER
According to Peter King of SI.com, the final terms of the trade between the Chiefs and the Patriots include the movement of both quarterback Matt Cassel and linebacker Mike Vrabel in exchange for a second-round pick.
As a practical matter, then, the connection of Vrabel to the deal decreases the likelihood (in our view) of a third team crashing the party and bagging Cassel.
Meanwhile, we're hearing rumblings that the Buccaneers are the undisclosed mystery team, and that if they can't land Cassel they'll make a play for quarterback Tyler Thigpen, the incumbent starter in Kansas City.

Patriots trade Cassel to Chiefs
Posted: February 28th, 2009 | Adam Schefter | Tags: Kansas City Chiefs, Matt Cassel, New England Patriots
The Kansas City Chiefs have completed a trade for New England Patriots quarterback Matt Cassel. There is no new contract in place, but the teams have agreed on compensation — details of which were not immediately available.
But it is a done deal. Cassel is going to Kansas City.
Where do you come up with this stuff Florio? I don't see Schefter saying anywhere here that there is a third team involved.
Schefter said it on NFLN, Ryan.
I actually LOL'd at the Thigpen speculation. If Pioli can pull off this trade for a 2nd rounder, and then get the Bucs to give up picks for Thigpen, just give him another executive of the year award right now.
Whoever steals Thigpen away for peanuts could be the big winner. The guy showed amazing potential playing for a terrible team with a washed up, crybaby running back who wanted to be traded, and his best receiver was a 57 year old tight end who also wanted to be traded. Imagine what he could do with a solid running game and throwing to Bryant, and at the same time not worrying about needing to score 40 in order to win.
Keep digging Florio, I can't believe that the Pats would trade a starting quaterback and an all pro linebacker for a second round pick.
...
Please tell me the Patriots got more than the 34th overall pick for Matt Cassel and Mike Vrabel. Please?
I'd FIRE whoever made this trade, immediately, if that were the case. There would need to be at least one other pick involved (conditional next year or one this year) to even think about this. no one in the second round is going to replace both Vrabel and Cassel. They might not replace either. . .
Would have been way smarter to just trade up our 1st for their first and give them Tom Brady. . . If this is true, Scott Pioli must be the best GM ever and Bob Kraft just screwed up big time by not shelling out 20+ a year for him.
Its offical Dave, sorry the Pats got taken on this one.
I wonder if the Bucs could pull off a trade for Thigpen by offering up that horrible disgrace of a defensive coordinator, Jim Bates?
I hope the news of Tyler is true. One, he had earned the chance somewhere. and Sam hit it right on the head about Pioli being Exec of the year, crazy good. Go KC
Anybody that thinks the Pats gotten taken in this one is a MORON!
THe Pats got rid of Cassel's $14 mil bench riding contract and managed to part ways with a LB they love but would have likely cut in the next season or two and got the 34th pick in the draft for it.
Effing IDIOTS! Do you not understand value? Cassel wasn't worth $14 mil a year to start with and now the Chiefs will take on his contract while the Pats take away an early 2nd. This is a great move on the Pats part.
Brandon is exactly right. Vrabel was a great player, but is pretty much done. You could really see him slow down the last year and a half. Cassel... time will tell. But the Pats get the 34th overall pick in the draft, sidestep having to pay huge dollars to either Cassel or whoever would have been the 3rd overall pick -- who would almost certainly not have started -- and can use the cash freed up to sign people like Wilfork. Smart deal for New England.
pats got a nice deal, they clear cap space, get a second rounder, and get giselle as a
sister-in-law and get to see her more often
WHOOOPPPPEEEEE! SCOT MICHELL 2009, He's not throwing to moss anymore TOTO! if the chiefs are smare they will make casell and thigpen battle it out !
To put this in perspective for us Bucs fans with no QB:
Chiefs trade # 2 pick for Matt Cassell and Mike Vrabel.
Bucs trade a #2 and a #5 for Kellen Winslow.
Oh and did I mention that TE is not one of our critical needs?
Disgusted....
Two classic Peter King quotes from the article:
"-- and proceeded to have one of the best seasons of any quarterback in football. He was eighth in the league with 3,693 passing yards and 10th with an 89.4 quarterback rating."
Yep, 8th and 10th out of 32 defines greatness by anyone's standards.
"It would not be surprising to see Belichick make the deal with Pioli because both were trained under Bill Parcells, and Parcells always made sure he watched out for his lieutenants and helped them whenever it didn't hurt him."
That old rogue Bellichick with his heart of gold. Warms the cockles, doesn't it?
I think this is a "reward" deal from the Patriots to Pioli for not signing with Cleveland. In Cleveland, Pioli would have worked with Mangini who ratted Bill B out in the spygate ordeal. How could the Patriots give up Casell alone for just a second round pick. Somebody surely would have given up a first and maybe additional picks. Granted the pick is a high second round pick which almost equates to a low first round pick. However, the deal just seems to good to be true especially since Tom B's status is somewhat still questionable.
Given that Pioli and BB know both of these players better than anyone else in the league maybe they know something we dont. Maybe they know that this deal makes sense, or maybe seeing as they are both very crafty veterans of trading, there is something else coming down the pike.
