Skins Initial Foray Smells Like Folly
One month ago, I spent a few minutes talking to Clinton Portis at the Super Bowl. What went wrong, I asked, with a team that was 6-2 and finished 8-8? What happened with Jason Campbell, the Redskins quarterback who didn't throw a pick until week nine?
Protection for Campbell and open holes in the running game, was the reply. It was that simple.
And now, in the first eight hours of the 2009 free agent period, the Washington Redskins have written contracts worth $170 million to a pair of defensive players. As free agency began at midnight, the Skins signed cornerback DeAngelo Hall to a six-year, $54 million deal with $22.5 guaranteed (he spent the end of last season in Washington after being released by Oakland). And they've now agreed to a seven-year, $100 million deal with Albert Haynesworth with $41 million guaranteed.
Neither player carries with him the reputation of being a real winner. Hall pissed and moaned his way out of Atlanta, went to Oakland last year, got paid, and now has cashed in again. Haynesworth is a dominant player who is smart but not terribly mature. And he gets hurt a lot.
Hall has played in two career playoff games, both in his first year in the league. Haynesworth's played in six playoff games and hasn't been to a conference championship since 2002 with Tennessee.
Now Jim Zorn, who was taking on water at the end of his first season as Redskins head coach, has been afforded the most expensive defensive weapon on the market, another guy who's making $30 million in the first three years of his deal and he has to keep peace and succeed in a locker room where guys like Portis can be a pain in the posterior.
And, oh yeah, that offense that averaged 16.6 points and finished 28th out of 32 teams? It still may need some help.

About this blog
Drilling deeply into the mantle layer of America's Passion, NBCSports.com's Tom Curran offers up quick hits and insights on all things NFL.
Typical Redskins move. Danny Snyder once again shows he has 0.0 football acumen, and the same goes for his puppet Cerrato. As a Giants fan, days like today make me appreciate the competency of Jerry Reese and Kevin Abrams.
Big Albert has had his moments on and off the field. He's been hounded by some really boneheaded moves in his career, starting back at UT.
You are correct, he does get banged up frequently, and you have to wonder if he can hold up for the duration of his new contract. I wish him well, though. If he can get a grip on his life, so much the better.
Dan Snyder sure does fit in with the best (gag) of them; Jerry Jones and George Steinbrenner. When will they learn you cannot buy a championship? And yes, he clearly shows how clueless he is about playing the game of football.
Don't go throwing Jerry Jones into that mix, 3 Superbowls in a 20 year tender, yea that is a horrible GM...
I think the Hall deal is overrated, when last year did Hall prove he is worth 55 million dollars? I'm not seeing it...
yes jerry belongs in that group. it was jimmy johnson and the remnants of his teams under switzer that won those 3 super bowls...not the moron jones who has done nothing but make the cowboys a joke.
Danny and Vinny will prove again they don't have a clue what they are doing. Great choices for a team that averaged 16 points a game last year.
I think it's time to put football exec's through the Accu-placer.
Another great move Snyder...
Ummm Gene...If the Giants would have picked up Haynesworth, you would have jumped for joy. Now the skins will stuff the run and have pressure up the middle. This is a great selection. Plus, Derrick Dockery OL has been released by the Bills and sources are indicating he wants to come back to Washington
The Redskins suffered greatly from a bunch of injuries across the board. The only positions that weren't significantly affected were QB and RB. Clinton Portis was right but as usual with him, his answer didn't go deep enough. The Redskins' most glarring weakness was at WR where Santana Moss was routinely double teamed and noone else consistently stepped up. With no good secondary receivers teams could just clog up the line, slow down the already slow Chris Cooley coming off the line and tee off on the pass rush.
Jerry Jones belongs in that group. Their success in the first half of the 1990s was fueled by good drafting. And the draft picks they swindled from Minnesota for Herschel Walker helped them even do that.
Now he's trying to buy his way to success with T.O., Roy Williams, Zach Thomas, and other high-priced players instead of developing his own with a talented coaching staff. Sounds like Steinbrenner to me.
Yeah, and Jones also DRAFTED DeMarcus Ware, Jason Witten, Marion Barber and Terence Newman. The man KNOWS football talent...he just doesn't know COACHING talent!!
I work in Washington. As soon as I saw the announcements about Haynesworth and Hall, I started a move in our office to boycott the Redskins. These signings were enormously wrong on so many levels, especially the fact that they rewarded bad actors.
I started boycotting the Cowboys when Jones trashed Tom Landry. Now I will add the Redskins to my boycott list. Maybe I'll move to Miami, where the Dolphins leadership now seems to at least have a clue about how to build a successful team.
I'm a huge Redskin fan and yes, they did it again. Haynesworth will be the biggest bust in free agency history! We need OFFENSIVE LINE help. As much as it pains me to say, we should have spent that money on Alex Gibbs to coach the offensive line and pick up one or two top notch offensive linemen. We need an OT in the draft, but they'll pick up a LB.
There you go haters. Just resigned Dockery.
OL will be Samuels/Dockery/Rabach/Thomas/Jansen with Reinhart, Heyer, Fabini, potentially Kendall, and at least one draft pick this year. Heck we still may sign Wills.
Rest assured, Danny is gearing up for a big season. He knows our holes. OL, DT, and LB. DT is done. This automatically makes Carter and Taylor more effective. We have Rogers and Hall as possibly the best young starting CB tandem in the league. Need a playmaking LB. Our defense lacks big plays and turnovers, we'll get that now.
Look for the skins to address the final 2 holes, LB and OL (OT/C) in the draft. Then look out baby, here we come.
The Redskins defense ranked 4th in the league last year, without a pass rush. We just bought one. We now have the best DT in the game. And....we're not finished. We'll get 2 additional offensive linemen and a SAM LB. A veteran WR is not out of the question either. You can hate all you want but I do know that Danny Boy is and will always be a Redskins fan...and in honor of Jack Kent Cooke he opens up the purse strings. Hail!
I completely disagree with your take on the Skins. They needed Deangelo Hall at CB, Springs is too old, he's a hometown (VT) guy, and he can CATCH THE BALL. The Redskins' biggest problem has been creating turnovers, not the O-line. You can't deny Hall's ability to produce interceptions.
They also got the most dominant defensive player in the league. How can that be a bad thing. He commands two offensive players on every play, period. A healthy Jason Taylor and Andre Carter are going to greatly benefit.
Now, the Skins are signing Derrick Dockery ... again. That will solidify the Guard spot. If they can draft an offensive tackle (Smith/Oher?), then I'd say this was a perfect off season.
In these horrendous times where folks are losing their homes and have no money for food it seems a slap in the face that sports figures are still commanding incomes to rival kings...............how come teachers do not make more?.......or DSHS workers?
Our priorities are skewed so far out of whack...it is a wonder that intelligence, compassion or personal sacrifice plays any role at all in society.
Will there come a day when the mind will be considered worthless in comparison to the body of an athlete?
Families go cold and hungry in the streets and still sports figures make sure they get more money in a year or two than most will ever see in two life times..................and being in this horrible recession does not seem to have any affect on the need-to-be-richer.....................I hope the new tax laws level out the field for us all.
Hmmmm...the Cowboys draft of the 90's and Jimmy Johnson are the reasons the Cowboys won their Superbowls. Who owned the team when this happened?
Debbie - Drinking the kool-aid aside, why are you dragging politics into a sports blog?
I wonder if maybe Dan Snyder should have a word or two with Ted Leonsis (who owns the Washington Capitals). The Capitals are currently second in the Eastern Conference (of 15 teams), poised to run away with their division, and have a legitimate shot at the Cup this year after a fire-sale and rebuild in 2004. All but two of their key lynchpins this year are under 25, and they were deep enough to sustain an injury bug that hit a full third of their roster at once without losing ground. Now that's someone who might be able to give Snyder some pointers.
A.B. Americans thrive on competition whether it's in sports or politics so I sort of agree with Debbie but for a different reason. Long before this current recession I was concerned about the salaries and other concessions atheletes and their agents were demanding. Kind of like the idiot who spent $1 million refurbishing his office after getting a bazillion dollar bailout with my tax dollars. Professional sports atheletes and thier management are going to kill the Golden Goose which will be tragic for all of them and all of us.
Answer to Mike post @ 5:10 a.m. Of course Jerry Jones owned the team when that happened but at that time he had the sense to STAY OUT OF THE WAY. Now he doesn't - He is becoming an Al Davis Clone.
I am a Patriots fan and one of the BIG reasons the Patriots are so successful is the simple reason that Kraft hired Belichik to run the show. Belichik runs the show and Kraft stays out of the way. For whatever reason, Jones doesn't have the sense to stay out of the way and I enjoy seeing the cowboys screw up every year, as do many people.
Dallas may never win again in the playoffs until Jerry the owner fires Jerry the GM, and they bring in a proper football man, and coaches who's authority is not usurped.
That being said, Jerry seems like a model of fiscal sanity held up next to Little Danny. Albert Haynesworth is a great player when he is motivated. All motivation just left the building in a Brinks truck. He will eat his way out of the league in a few short injury filled unproductive years, and Skins fans will mutiny and burn Vinny and Danny at the stake for their sins. I also can not remember the last time DeAngelo Hall made a play worth .10 let alone $30 mil guaranteed.
Good luck with that.
Ware, Witten, and Barber are Cowboys, thanks to the "Big Tuna".
How does the potential absence of a collective bargaining agreement when the new one ends impact these new contracts?
Quick note to Debbie:
The NFL is a business and not payed for by the government. Your statement is completely irrelavent because of that fact.
Good job,
-Tim
Quick note to Debbie:
These people get paid that kind of money because they earn more for somebody else (the owners). Kind of like movie stars, except these athletes work damn hard for the admittedly exceptional pay they receive.
As far as the Redskins go, Snyder isn't very good at what he does, but he sure is a Believer. Snyder is also very lucky that Joe Gibbs packed it up on his own. He REALLY would have turned into a Jones-clone (clown?) if he had eventually sacked the franchise Icon.
Haynesworth and Hall are good players - especially Haynesworth - but I don't think the Redskins can capitalize on them effectively. Showboat owners have problems with showboat talent, there just isn't enough room on one franchise for so many egos. You've seen it with the 'Skins and Neon Deon for instance. It takes a Parcels-type guy with background owners to get the most out of the world's Lawrence Taylors. Taylor would've burned out on a different kind of team (such as the modern Cowboys or Redskins).
Haynesworth or Hall would be much better, productive players in a franchise like the Steelers. They are the kind of team the old Giants used to be. Good owners who know ball well enough to leave it to the pros, and know good pros to run the program when they see them (Cowher, Tomlin). Those two things are what keep the 'Boys and the 'Skins from realizing their potential, far more than anyone else on the actual roster - or who they can get for their roster.
cowboys rule yall stink . give jerry jones credit he took over the team when we needed help the most we ruled the 90's and we will rule again so take that and smoke it in your piece pipe

The time has come for the Washington Redskins' fans to take back the team from its incompetent owner, Daniel Snyder.
Collectively, we, the lifelong fans of the Washington Redskins are upset, angry and quite frankly embarrassed at how Dan Snyder has systematically destroyed one of the most revered, successful and valuable franchises in all of sports.
Unfortunately, he will never sell the team, but that doesn't mean we as fans cannot influence his decision making by hitting him where it hurts: his pocketbook.
Here's how we can do this:
