JETS EXTEND LITO
After picking up the rights to cornerback Lito Sheppard via a trade with the Eagles, the Jets have given Sheppard a new contract.
Per a league source, it's a two-year extension to a contract that has three remaining years.
He'll get $3 million in 2009, his prior base salary. Thereafter, it's a four-year, $21 million deal.
On the fifth day of the 2010 league year, Sheppard receives a $10 million option bonus.
If Sheppard participates in at least 39 percent of the plays in 2009, Sheppard's salary escalates by $1.55 million per year for 2010 through 2013, making the four-year package after this season worth $27.2 million.
Of course, the Jets could cut Sheppard before the fifth day of the league year, but he'd be an unrestricted free agent.
If, in the end, he stays for all five years (and participates in at least 39 percent of the snaps this season), he'll make $30.2 million.
So instead of having the three-year, $10.95 million contract that previously applied, he's got a five-year deal worth $30.2 million -- if he meets the play-time trigger. (Otherwise, it's five years and $25 million.)
The bad news for Sheppard is that, if he wins the starting job across from up-and-coming star Darrelle Revis, Sheppard might find himself in a hail storm of footballs, like DeAngelo Hall last year across from Nnamdi Asomugha in Oakland.

Ten dollar option bonus seems small... does it come with a free coke, too?
Wow they really broke the bank with that ten dollar bonus!
I got 5 on it.....
The Eagles are so stupid! If it only took the Jet's a $10 bonus to sign Lito I don't know why they didn't just extend him instead of trading him. Jeffrey Lurie is a cheap bastard and it's only hurting us.
So that 10$ doesn't push them over the cap? I could have sworn they only had $3 left after coles going away party, guess that didn't count against the cap.
Can this 10$ signing bonus escalate to 15 dollars if he does his homework and takes out the trash?
The $10 option is as funny as Florio's command of the English language. Florio has the same command over the written word that Emmit has over the verbal! If he could string a paragraph together without butchering the world's language he may actually qualify as a blogging hack -- how ironic!
So?
10 million option next offseason...sounds like the Ty Law deal a while back
A one year deal....terrible restructure if you reported this right
Well, just remember this. Lito sucks. Even when Lito was good, he sucked. I am not a bandwagoner. I never liked him. He has the mentality and toughness of a (something that is not tough or manly). He quit on his team. Hopefully, the Jets get a year supply of tampons with Lito. No respect for that clown at all. Jets fans, enjoy the phantom injuries.
Smush,
Did he suck when he was making all those big play for the Eagles against the Cowboys? Lito is a decent player, his only issue is that he is injury prone. If he really did quit on the Eagles, well you can't blame him as they quit on him first. If he is as bad as you say, how come they wanted a second round player for him last year? I hope all he needs is a change of scenery to get back to form.
First, being from Philly and seeing Lito play for many years I can say without fail you are getting "above good".
Second, Lito wanted out the door and yes he was not going to do extra effort last year with us. And because of that he was let go. The guys here are not foolish. If he was performing they would have kept him.
Third, you will here he was big againsy Dallas. Almost like saying he wasn't big otherwise. You just have to remember we HATE Dallas and if you run some game winning balls back on D we will remember that for a long time.
I think you guys know Herm Edwards. We still have names for his big play too.
Finally, you will be more then happy with him next year. I will follow him myself. You guys did good. Be thankful.
