JETS PICKING UP WHERE THEY LEFT OFF IN 2008
The New York Jets tried to buy a playoff team in 2008. They failed.
And coach Eric Mangini paid for it with his job.
This year, the Jets are at it again. On the same day that they signed linebacker Bart Scott and re-signed right guard Brandon Moore, the Jets are completing a trade for Eagles cornerback Lito Sheppard.
According to Adam Schefter of NFL Network, the Jets will surrender a fifth-round pick in 2009 and a conditional draft pick in 2010, which can range from a second-round pick to a fifth-round pick.
The specific 2010 selection that the Jets ultimately send to Philly won't matter to G.M. Mike Tannenbaum if the Jets again miss the playoffs. Because Tannenbaum likely won't be presiding over the team's draft next year if the coming season ends without a playoff game.
And until they get a quarterback who can throw the ball in the Meadowlands winds, any other moves that they make simply won't matter.

This is unbelieveable! A fifth round and conditional pick?! Wasn't it just one year ago whenthe eagles were looking for a first rounder for lito?! Awsome job Lurie and Banner! Now the secondary, without Sheppard and DAWKINS will be fantastic. Terrific job by eagles management
The Jets are throwing money away with no one to throw the ball. Enjoy your last year Tannenbaum.
Jake,
Calm down man! I think it is the worst move ever not signing Dawk back, but Lito? Please, "the secondary w/o Sheppard" yeah I think the last time I saw Lito do anything in the secondary was a couple years ago now. He is a waste and if he stays on the field and does anything we will get a 2nd round pick in 2010 for the crippled bastard. Good Riddance Lito, but I'm not ready to say bye to Dawkins, awful move on that front.
uhh florio stop it..its embarrassing...what the jets are doing this offseason is masterful..almost all of thier signings last year did very well. Getting lito sheppard for a 5th rounder is a steal. Clemens showed a lot of flashes in a year without an offensive line.
You forget clemens beat pittsburgh and if not for a couple of drops (by guys who are no longer here)would have beaten the ravens in baltimore. but then again im not sure if you watch the games you just like to rip on the jets for some reason ...maybe they didnt buy your book or something..all i know is that I used to go to your anti jet website to read the scoops..now that your site has been down im realizing you dont get any scoops you just have links to other peoples...
werent people offering a 2nd rounder for lito last year?..the eagles are so smart they are stupid...first carolina fleeced them for their first rounder last year, now this....
Dont Complain
Lito Sheppard just a few years ago was one of the top in the game. He is easily one of the fastest around. And while i would like to see him gone, i feel the eagles could have gotten more for him. Why not package him in a deal to get someone/thing better?
black,
How did Carolina Fleece the Eagles last year? Didn't we turn that trade into Laws,McGlynn, Demps AND their first round pick this year? Fleeced???? Remember, we turned around and traded that second round pick to Minnesota for their second(Laws) and their fourth (Demps). We used Carolina's fifth rounder on McGlynn. Add in the 28th pick this year and well, uh, well if you don't get it by now you won't ever get it.
since you put it that way...i stand corrected..lol...i would have preferred for them to take Jeff Otah with that pick last year tho...
fuck the eagles they are pathetic stupid pieces of shits
Florio, you're pathetic. The Jets are solidifying their entire squad. After they lock up the secondary they have an unknown at quaterback and a need at WR...everything else seems great except for depth at certain positions.
I suppose they should plead with Favre to unretire?
Stop ripping the Jets and get over your issues with this organization- it's embarrassing for this website and interfering with your job.
black,
I do see your point on Otah, he would look nice right about now. However, I would still rather have what we ended up with. Laws and Demps both had significant playing time as rookies with a coach who doesn't normally play rookies all that often.
I am getting tired of us trading out of the first round, but last year made a lot of sense.
Brian,
Are you really calling anyone stupid? Your first grade teacher should be fired.
This coming from a guy who can't even keep his site running on the busiest day of the offseason, probably the most important day to his site
MIKE DO YOU NEED SOME HELP? WE HAVE A COMPUTER BUSINESS, 30 YEAR EXPERIENCE. EMAIL IF YOU WANT OR NEED A SECOND OPINION. ONE OF OUR SPEICALITIES IS RESCUE.
Florio, despite your irrational disdain for the Jets organization, I think about all the ad dollars you're losing, and I smile.
These are pickups that fill our immediate needs. Why anyone would bash these moves is beyond me. Guess he has nothing better to write about. If you're referring to our lack of a QB that has an arm strong enough to throw through the Meadowland winds, you're wrong again. If you watched any games last season, you'd notice the guy with the strongest arm is still on our team. That's right. Clemens. Stronger than Favre last season. Ask any of our receivers. Now accuracy is another story.
ProFootball Talk is nothing but a guy who couldn't get a real job in the NFL if it could save his life. When you rip the Jets, it only does more to prove that you have no substance to anything you say, you're just a guy that any head coach or GM in the league would walk past without so much as a glance.
Someone should send Mike Tannenbaum a Mike Florio voodoo doll.
