"MYSTERY TEAM" MAKING PLAY FOR CASSEL?

Adam Schefter of NFL Network reports that another unknown team has attempted to crash the Pioli-Patriots party involving the rights to quarterback Matt Cassel.

It's unknown whether the move came before the deal was finalized, and whether the Pats would be inclined to renege on an agreement in principle with Kansas City.

If they do, it would be an interesting development in the relationship between the Patriots and their former V.P. of player personnel.

Under the deal between the Chiefs and the Pats, the 34th overall selection in the draft goes to New England.  As Peter King of SI.com (and NBC) points out, it gives the Patriots three second-round picks in the 2009 draft.

There are about 8-10 teams who should be tripping over themselves to beat that deal...

mystery team is tampa. They have the pieces to sweeten the deal, they have enough cap room to take cassel, plus they have young linebackers that belechick loves to collect, they have barrett ruud who has a brother on the pats, and they have ryan nece, another patriot-type player. Plus Tampa can offer more picks.

Any word on when PFT will be back in its real form?

Pioli understands that this is a business. He's a big boy and he'll be fine. If he wants Cassel then he should have offered a better deal!

Um, the Bucs dont have Ryan Nece anymore

Ryan said:

I don't care if they don't seem like they are even in it, I still hope this new team is the Vikings. We NEED Cassel!!

According to Mike Reiss of the Boston Globe: "The Kansas City Chiefs have just sent out a release confirming that they have traded their second-round pick (34th) overall selection in April's draft to the Patriots for quarterback Matt Cassel and linebacker Mike Vrabel."

jimmy said:

the chiefs should trade fat bust glen dorsey to carolina for peppers, then they should play peppers at OLB and have him play a demarcus-ware type role, also they could use peppers as a goalline tight end since he has a basketball background and is athletic.

i bet it was the jets. they need a qb and would like nuthin better than to mess up the pats or a former pat guy now in kaycee.

anyone else think it is odd that the team that knocked brady out for the season now has his replacement?

Kayvon said:

My guess would be the Pats did not want the 3rd overall pick because of the money or perceeved "value" The third pick in the second round has more "value" in terms of player versus dollars and in a deep draft is equivalent to those late 1st rounders that the Pats almost always make hay on.

All of that said, it still makes you shake your head when you consider how the Chiefs knocked out Brady and then took Pioli, why not throw in Richard Seymour as well?
