REPORTS: BRONCOS ENTERTAINED TRADING CUTLER

Adam Schefter of NFL Network and Vic Lombardi of CBS4 in Denver report that the Broncos have been shopping quarterback Jay Cutler.

Per both reports, the Bucs and Broncos were trying to swing a three-way deal pursuant to which Matt Cassel would have been traded from the Pats to the Broncos, Cutler would have gone from Denver to Tampa, and the Patriots would have been compensated presumably by the Buccaneers.

According to Schefter, the Lions also approached the Broncos about a trade for Cutler.

And here's where it gets interesting.  Schefter's version creates the impression that the Broncos didn't initiate the talks, and merely responded to the offers presented.  Vic Lombardi's version suggests that the Broncos were and are shopping the eleventh overall pick in the 2006 draft.

"I've heard the rumors," Cutler told Vic Lombardi.  "I know what they're trying to do.  Even though I love Denver and I'd love to remain a Bronco, I know how this business works.  If they want me to play somewhere else, so be it."

Despite Cutler's generally P.C. comments, Schefter contends that Cutler was angered by the news.

There's a consensus in league circles that Cutler has plateaued after showing some improvement early in the 2008 season.  He has been criticized in some circles for having a nonchalant demeanor.

The reality is that, whenever there's a new coach, there's a chance that he'll want to pick his own quarterback.  Regardless of whether the Broncos initiated the trade talks, the fact that the Broncos said anything other than "hell no" suggests that new coach Josh McDaniels wants to go in a different direction.

This had better not be anything more than speculation after teams contacted Denver about a possible trade. Without Jay Cutler, this team would have been lucky to win any games last year. You do not trade a franchise QB coming into his 4th season after just making the Pro Bowl.

If they are even considering it, Denver fans will chew them up and spit them out. McD and Xanders would not last long, and Bowlen should think twice about going out in public.

"..pursuant to which.." WTF???

Anyone would think Florio is a make believe lawyer.

And what are these circles of which he speaks?

Could they be league sources? or someone close to the player/team/coach? or a contact with many years experience? Or maybe, just maybe, something the writer's pulled out of his ass??

Inquiring minds need to know.

Just checked the broncos site to look into a new Dawkins jersey and noticed no Cutler jerseys for sale...

There are Cutler jersey's all over their offical site for sale. The #1 selling item is a Cutler Youth Reebok Jersey. Quit spreading lies!!!

Damn, that actually would have been a really good trade for all the franchises (assuming the Pats made out better than they have thus far with the Chiefs)....Cassel probably would have performed better in Denver than he will in KC (with his former OC, as well as better targets), and the Bucs would have obtained an actual quarterback.

I'm not saying Cassel would have performed better than Cutler presumably will in Denver....just saying the trade seems to make a lot of sense even though it would be a bit of a gamble for Denver.

MattR said:

If Detroit offered Cassell and the #1 pick, it would be irresponsible of the Broncos to respond "hell no" without even thinking about what that could mean for the team.

The Donks opened up Pandora's Box.

Will they be able to close it?

This would be suicide for McDaniels! How can he be so dumb? He doesn't seem to care much about winning over the fans in Denver..

Why would he be so dumb as to even bring all this speculation to the team and in doing so he has drove a wedge in between he and Cutler..

He isn't half as smart as he things he is..

Is McDaniels drunk? Cassel over Cutler?

Chris said:

Not surprised. Cutler is not well liked in the locker room and makes more bad decisions than any starting qb in the league.

Neal said:

He my just be trying to light a fire under Cutler's ass.

Chris: You know this ("Cutler is not well liked in the locker room and makes more bad decisions than any starting qb in the league.") how, exactly? Riiight.

architectx said:

Chris, where are you getting your information that Cutler isn't well liked in the locker room? I've read just about every PFT, RMN and DP article for years and haven't heard anything like that? And as for bad decisions, that's a load. Cutler was put under enormous pressure this year with seven different starting running backs and a D that gave up a ton of points per game. He had to constantly throw, the opponents knew he'd be throwing. It made it pretty easy to game plan and make him look silly.

I think trading Jay would be the best move for Denver.

Wow, McDaniels and Xanders must be smoking something. Without Cutler Denver wins maybe 3 games last year.

Cassel is the 21st century version of Scott Mitchell, Cutler is a franchise QB. What was there to consider?????

Ugh, I feared this would happen when I learned of Denver hiring McDaniels..that he would try to implement "his own guys" a.k.a. current and former Patriot players into Denver's roster. This talk of McDaniel's trying to trade Cutler for Cassel makes me sick. This guy was a career backup throughout his college and NFL days and McDaniel's wants to give Cutler the boot for him. What a joke. This is so utterly pathetic. Classic example of an inexperienced coach in this league thinking he's a know-it-all already. Everyone thinks Cassel is so great. But of course, lest we forget, he was thrown into a system that is basically the NFL's version of Texas Tech's offense and was throwing to perhaps the best receiving corps in the NFL, for ONE season. If McDaniel's trades Cutler, I'll just laugh and pick up my following of the Broncos in a few years when McDaniel's fails miserably and flops on his stupid face. I already miss Shanahan...

If Lombardi's version is anywhere close to correct, then Josh McDaniels just got off to a really bad start with the Broncos.

matt said:

I am already ready to say bye to McDaniels. Cassel had one really good year with a really good team that lose one game the year before, not tomention two all pro wr's. Cutler does throw some bad passes but did we forget so did Elway or Farve for that matter. If Mcdaniels trades Cutler i am done with him. I will take Cutler his upside and his once in awhile bad passes over Cassel any day and the fact that this is even a story just made me lose faith in one of the things i love most (the broncos).

SoStupid said:

Vic Lombardi is not right at all. Brian Xanders even stated that they were not going to trade Cutler at all.

I don't understand how you miss Shanahan, he signs chumps like McCree and Manuel and McDaniels signs Brian fucking Dawkins. The media is just trying to put a huge spin on this story.

nate collins said:

bronco fans face reality, mcdaniels is not committed to buy into the jay cutler era like shanahan did. mcdaniels did not draft cutler, shanahan did and now he is gone. there is a new coach in town and the broncos will be the new england patriots of the west with or without jay cutler. the new coach has the support of the owner. that tells u that the owner is not all that sold on cutler either. with theperceptin of non-chalant and immature demeanor arond the the league that does not bold well for a so-called franchise qb. scholarship days was over when he left vanderbuilt. the nfl is a business. it's time bronco fans realize that and get their heads out of their collective butts.

NOT A HAPPY BRONCO FAN RIGHT NOW!!!!!!!

Efe said:

If this is true I think Xanders and McDaniels should be fired before this happens. Cutler was the only player we have. I thought McDaniels is supposed to make the team better and have a good relationship with the QB. Cutler is not only a leader in the club house but also in the community. if this is true then I already lost faith and hope in this so called new regime. NOT A HAPPY BRONCO.

BroncoFan said:

I like how Florio says "there's a consensus in league circles that Cutler plateaued in early 2008." Really Mike? I think the consensus is Denver's defense was horrible (weeks 2 & 3 couldn't hold 21-3 leads at home), early 2008 is when Denver's RBs started going down like flies, and Jay had to pass on every down. If it wasn't for Jay Denver does not beat SD at home, NO at home, Cle on the road, and Atl on the road, at least.

You know a couple years ago you were all about how the fat kid in TN and the hollywood star in AZ were better than Jay. Hate much?

Frank said:

Just because Brian Xanders says they are not actively trying to move Cutler that means that its true? How many times have we heard GMs, coaches, even players say they aren't going to do something then turn around and do exactly that?

Just because McDaniels didn't draft Cutler that means he shouldn't buy into him?!? What kind of answer is that? He didn't draft Brady or Cassel either, but he sure as hell bought into them. He hasn't even given Cutler a chance to perform in his system. Like Matt fucking Cassel is some great QB, get real. This is so pathetic, I can't even believe this is a story. Matt Cassel hasn't done shit. Look at the team that he was surrounded by. You think he could duplicate that success with Denver and their defense?!? He had a good defense to back him up in New England and great WRs. I'm going to laugh so hard when Cassel flops like a blue whale out of water in KC. KC doesn't have the talent on offense that Cassel had in New England nor does he have the same defense to back him up. Look at the offensive line Cassel had to protect him in New England. He won't get close to that type of help from KC's o-line.

And even after Cassel was traded to KC, there are still reports that those fuckin idiots McDaniels and Xanders were trying to still shop him to other teams. Give me a break. Talk about tweedle-dee and tweedle-dum. Cutler is the centerpiece of that team and to think otherwise is total and utter stupidity.

This is a god damn joke. I thought McDaniels is so good with qb's. You would think he would be excited to coach Jay. He's got way more talent then Cassell. Hey Josh! Don't bring your Patriot garbage to Denver with you. If you like them that much you should have stayed there. LOSER!!

Mavpa said:

Good thing they got Dawkins to patch up that inevitable locker room situation.

Efe said:

Mavpa, honey, our deffence needs alot more help then a old ass safety. No doubt he'll help, but our "D" has more holes than an old fence. Hopefully McAsshole will draft some "D" prospects and not more "WR's". As far as that locker room situation, McDick ain't helping any. What do you think players are going to be talking about?

Alyssa said:

At first I was very dis-appointed about Shanahan getting fired. I think he did just have too much power. I Don't necessarily think he should have gotten fired but he did.
Next, I think things escalatted alot more then they should have with the whole Cutler thing. I think Cutler did get hurty when he heard rumors about the whole trade talk. . . But its football. It happens. I think McDaniels did try numerous times to get in touch with him and make amends, but Cutler wasn't up for it. Even Pat Bowlen tried. Cutler didnt want to play on the Broncos with different coaches. Why have someone on our team If they don't want to be here?
I mean it sucks he got traded, but It happened. . . Now we gotta back up our coach n what he's trying to do with our team. Only time will tell if it the right thing or not. If your really a Broncos fan, you'd back them up winning or losing!
