Cutler Talking Way Out of Denver

As expected, Jay Cutler didn't show for the opening meetings of the Broncos offseason workouts this morning.

That's the news so far today. Meanwhile, the fatter news as detailed earlier by Gregg came in the Broncos and Cutler in dueling gut-spillers with ESPN (Cutler) and Peter King (Broncos head coach Josh McDaniels.

I won't link to what Gregg already hit, but two things jumped out at me.

One, was Cutler's blase, disrespectful comment about Broncos owner Pat Bowlen.

Mortenson wrote, "As for ignoring phone calls from McDaniels and Bowlen, Cutler said: 'Josh and I have exchanged text messages. We had a conference call. And if Pat wanted to speak to me, why didn't he come to the meeting on Saturday?' "

In other words, Cutler doesn't deny blowing off Bowlen. And, as far as he's concerned, if the owner wants an audience with his employee, he knows where to find him.

How Bowlen will ultimately react remains to be seen but it's a snub that a guy who was in lockstep with Hall of Famer John Elway isn't going to appreciate having a three-year veteran defecating on his forehead.

Meanwhile, King makes the excellent point in his column that, "In the end, Denver will have to strongly consider trading Cutler. If you're a rookie coach, as McDaniels is, and you've got to set the right tone for the team, how can you have a quarterback who doesn't want to be there as your franchise leader? Parting with Cutler would be forcing the Broncos to start over at the game's most important position when they thought they had the position filled for the next decade. But Cutler, who is one of the best quarterback prospects to enter the NFL in years, can be moody, and if he never buys what McDaniels is selling, it could drag the team down."

Meanwhile, McDaniels sounds beaten down by the whole process in his talk with King.

I think Cutler has worn out his welcome. He seems to be somewhat of a whiner and perhaps he won't fit in with the the Patriot style approach to offense, a smart, ball control system that doesn't rely on the long downfield pass. Bottom line in my book, he's a goner - too dumb to play for the new regime. I don't mean stupid - just dumb if you catch my drift.

Jim L. said:

From what I can tell, it seems like this rookie head coach has two major flaws: 1) he thinks he's as smart as Bill Belichick and 2) he has no idea how to lead. He's a child for goodness sakes and he's acting like one ... they both are, but he needs to step up and take the bull by the horns and get this worked out ... whatever it takes! Who's he going to trade him for? Brady Quinn? (unproven rookie) Derek Andersen? (one season flash in the pan) ... Cutler's a VERY GOOD to GREAT starter for the next 10 years and he's a PROVEN commodity. As a Broncos fan, hiring McDaniels seems like a bust waiting to happen ... bad move!

Bottom Line - If you can't get along with the boss, and that's starting with Pat Bowlen, then it's time to part ways. It's a shame, though, because Bowlen has supported Cutler in his 3 years here. Cutler has no reason to turn on Bowlen. In addition, I'm tired of agents getting in the way of teams working with their players. If Cutler's agent has pushed for a trade, instead of having Cutler work out differences, then he should be considered a problem agent, and treated accordingly. His track record is beginning to speak for itself. All in all, a real travesty, because Jay can be a real asset. But when your britches get too big for the "team", it's time to go. That same concept works for anyone - in sports, or any other type of job. Get along with the boss, or pack your bags and pay the consequences!!

Please just don't let Daniel Snider trade for this primadonna who has yet to win *anything* in the NFL or at Vandy for that matter.

Even if the current 'Skins QB is average at best at least he has a good attitude.

It is Denver who will be "paying the consequences," not Cutler. He'll still get paid for being the world class quarterback he is while Denver slides further into mediocrity under a coach who is now as short on talent as he is long on hubris

James Rick said:

In my opinion, Cutler's attitude has always been suspect. A whiney egotistical blowhard does not make for an effective leader. Sure, the kyd has a great arm, but it takes maturity and character to effectively put a 'team' on your shoulders. Cutler just hasn't shown he is capable of being 'the man'.

If the bits and pieces of news reports I've seen are correct, Cutler first became upset because McDaniels allegedly lied about attempting to trade for Cassel. Then, during the meeting this weekend, McDaniel laid it on the line and told Cutler that he wasn't looking to trade him now but would do whatever was best for the team. It seems Cutler doesn't particularly care for the truth either. Perhaps Cutler needs to be truthful with the Broncos. "Treat me like a football god or I'm going to throw a tantrum like a two year old." A primadonna has no place on a 'team'.

John in Denver said:

Cutler is a whiner and definately not a team player. Trade this ingrate.

Tom D. said:

Cutler is quickly reminding me of a Ryan Leaf, all the talent in the world and listens to his own press a bit too much. I mean for a guy to compare himself to a hall of famer before he's even led his team to a playoff game. You could see that arrogant sense of entitlement some young players have.

Barb Zeigler said:

I've been a die-hard Bronco fan since 1969. I'm thinking of changing that this season. I don't like the way Mr. Bowlen handled Mike Shanahan'w firing after all his loyal service. Maybe Mike deserved to be fired but it could have been handled better. Then he brings in a rookie coach who has now managed to tick off our quarterback with his ineptitude. If he hadn't really planned to trade Jay and was only "listening to trade offers", why didn't he call Jay to tell him right away instead of waiting until it turned into a firestorm? I don't believe Jay has handled himself like a professional either, but it does seem like he is being betrayed by the team he thought he would be spending his professional career with.

Carl Wiley said:

It sounds to me like someone needs to get a mediator out to Denver pronto. Both sides need to work this thing out. If Cutler leaves under these circumstances, he will carry a me first reputation with him for the rest of his time in the NFL. (See Jeff George) I said it before and I will say it again, you can't put a young franchise QB on the trading block without getting the deal done. This is going to be a poison pill and it is the fault of the new kids on the block, not the QB who got thrown under the bus. I don't see the conparison to Ryan Leaf. Leaf was a complete bust. Cutler has put up numbers for 3 years and doesn't have an issue with injuries or pain killers.

Blackheld said:

McDaniels lying surprises you all? Remember who trained him...Mr. "I don't need to apologize" Bill Belichick, who, by the way, is Peter King's homie. Note that Peter King just sold his home in NJ, to move to Boston, and the Patriots are looking for a public affairs guy. King's been auditioning for the job for the last couple years, and it looks like his work is paying off.

As far as the Lions getting Cutler, if they can, then great. They have the draft choices to do it, and while i still think Culpepper is the opening game starter in Detroit, trade or not...remember a QB needs a close to a year to learn the system...Cutler is the long term answer they need.

Also, Denver has a good trade history with Detroit, say what you will. The deal could be done.

Wander how Cutler would react to an $804.00
unemployement check every two weeks?

SKV said:

This isn't the first time Jay has been perceived as a whiner. I remember him under-performing during televised games last season, and when the cameras showed him on the sidelines he had a pout just like a little kid - so pathetic! I wouldn't want that behavior on my team either!

Cutler forgets he is part of a team, he is not the team itself. He forgets it's a business, and trades are part of the game. He forgets that he is lucky to HAVE a job (I agree with you Spike!).

Grow up Jake. You are not Favre, you are not Elway, and if you keep acting like this spoiled little brat we're seeing now, you'll never even come close.

RedR said:

Cutler took the team with the worst defense in the league and no running backs to an 8-8 record. With the talent around him being so decrepit, that record was amazing and shows how good he can be. No 8-8 team or better had nearly the lack of overall talent as the Broncos.
They need to keep Cutler, trade McDaniels.
Cutler saved the Broncos almost single-handedly last year, his performance with their talent was really MVP worthy. 8-8 was an amazing record for that group, and Cutler is the reason they were evfen competitive for most of the year. It was an insult to think Cassell was nearly even with Cutler.
What kind of idiot team trades the top young QB prospect in the league? It is unheard of. Period. Shocking if you think about it.
McDaniels has lost my respect. Save Cutler. With Cutler they are a year or two away, without him they are five years away.

Thomas said:

I've got a great idea, why not trade Cutler straight up for Vince Young, and send Jay back to Nashville. It could be a win win for all, if the money could be worked out to make it happen. If the Titans are not going to play Vince, why not give him an opportunity on a pretty good team. Jay would be loved at LP Field. Just a thought.

David Youngs said:

Dump Cutler, he's immature and as whiny as a two year old

Aaron said:

8-8 is not a good season when you consider that the Broncos started 8-3 and were 4 games ahead of the chargers for the division crown with 5 games left to play.

8-8 is only a "good" season when you start 0-8
And even then...it's not GREAT.

David said:

I had issues with Cutler back when he compared himself with Elway. And then he said he was shocked that Shanahan was fired, plus he also said that he had discussed with Mike Shanahan personnel decisions. Who the hell is he to be making personnel decisions? Did the former coach ask for his input? Maybe, maybe not. Looks like the problem is the new coach said "I'm the coach, you're the quarterback", and it isn't up to Cutler to make personnel decisions. He needs to go, like to the CFL, not the NFL. He needs a new agent too.

RedR said:

8-8 is a really good season when you have the worst defense in the NFL, a mediocre special teams, and no running backs to speak of.
The Broncos should not have been in contention as they were.
Only the pro-bowl performance of their young QB gave them any kind of shot.
Cutler proved he could make a lousy team competitive; McDaniels proved he could make a competitive team a joke and possibly into a long-term rebuilding mode.

James Woods said:

I wonder if it's money -- as in More? How can Cutler be mad about a possible trade then ask to be traded? Guessing, I fear Cutler's close advisor(s) may be fueling this fire. Perhaps not. However, will both Jay and his agent benefit monetarily if a trade comes about?

As a longtime fan I really want Josh McDaniels to succeed. He can be the best coach ever in Denver. Intuitively, I think Cutler is a good person at heart, too. But something is going on behind the curtain here because the issue Jay is so upset about does'nt hold water any more.

It will all be OK. I just hope McDaniels can weather this storm.

Erica said:

I tried to defend Cutler through all the crap talking going on in Denver, but I was hoping he would try and be the bigger man and just show up at Dove Valley today and get the job done. I am over it! Now he is being a big freakin' baby and he can go elsewhere. The Broncos have sucked since Elway retired, another couple of seasons won't hurt us!

Rudy said:

Bad football is one thing. To think you could bring in Matt Cassel to a brand new team to run "your system" says that you don't understand that football is more than just X's and O's. But to handle the communication this poorly with your current Pro Bowl QB suggests that you're too young to be in charge. Good leadership is more than having a "good football mind". Learning to lead people takes time, and we obviously have a kid running the show.

jr said:

I'd rather spend a bunch of Sundays watching the Broncos go 8-8 again as a true team than watch them make the playoffs behind a whiny, egotistical, divisive QB, regardless of his talent. Sure, he can put up some numbers. So can T.O.

WHO FREAKING CARES ABOUT THE NFL - ER I MEAN THE NATIONAL COMMERCIAL LEAGUE ANYWAY - ITS BASEBALL SEASON AND WE GET 3 OUTS BEFORE A COMMERCIAL WHOO HOOO

Gary said:

As Pat Kirwin said last season "Jay's kind of a ....thumb sucker..." and he's right. Bad defense is no excuse!, John Elway went to 5 Super bowls, 3 with terrible defenses.
Remember the Hershel Walker trade? It set up Dallas for 3 SB victories in 4 years. The new regime has it right, anyone is expendable and trade offers should be considered, accepted or rejected based on moving the franchise forward. All coaches are graded on wins and losses so as Mr. Parcells says "..if I'm gonna cook the meal at least let me shop for the groceries...". Look at the past SB winners.....DEFENSE WINS!!! The fabulous Brady laughed when Strahan said they would hold the Pats to 17 pts and they held the highest scoring team in history to 14. Manning would have another ring with a better defense, look at San Diego last 2 years. Jay should be thankful that the new coach is focused on Defense.

Ludwig72 said:

I love what McDaniels has set as precedent for this team: no one player is bigger than this team. Plain and simple.

If anyone familiar with Cutler and his big-mouth, then what he said these last two weeks should come as no big surprise. The only thing that has changed; you don't have Shanahan being a babysitter or a buffering zone for Cutler's ongoing retarded attitude and remarks. Shanahan placated to this tool and now you have a monster-in-waiting on your hands.

Can you say Terrell Owens starter-kit?

Could Denver's loss be Chicago's GAIN!?! If I were Jerry Angelo I'd be on that phone first thing in the morning. Let's see, we're only about 30 million under that salary cap, so we ought to be able to come up with SOMETHING for Jay. Maybe dangle Tillman and a second rounder out there for Denver so they don't feel taken advantage of. After all WIN-WIN is usually the best approach.

Trust is one of the most important aspects in coaching, Business, and life, this is why I believe Jay is 100% Justified in his actions. Let’s not forget this is his lively hood and what supports him and his family. Think, what if that was you and someone lied strait to your face concerning events that would threaten your lively hood? Let’s just remember that this is just entertainment for us but for Cutler it’s his Life. Shady Dealing Will Continue to Happen and most are not outed like this one. So there will be more to come.

MIP said:

I guess Rivers from San Diego had it right after all: Cutler is a cry baby, whiner and spoiled brat all rolled into one and typical of people from elite schools like Vanderbilt (a snob). He has none of the finer qualities of Elway who was always classy. Boy voyage Cutler. Hope they trade you to Detroit!

Henry said:

Jay started whining after Shanahan got fired. I think he felt that he wasn't consulted about that firing either. Furthermore, he was very tepid in the hiring of a Josh Mcdaniels. I don't think he was willing to learn a new system. He was further inflamed by the departure of his old offensive coordinator, who subsequently went to USC.
I don't think jay is a good fit with the new coach. A coach who came from a system of "all for one and one for all" mentality. Josh Mcdaniels will try to instill that mentality to his players, like what they did in New England. Jay is all about himself and his bigger than the team ego.
The Broncos should part ways with Cutler and get a quarterback who will buy into the "team" concept. No one can can mold a quarterback better than Josh Mcdaniels. Think Matt Cassel, he would have been perfect in Denver.

Ron said:

Make Cutler the back up and him sit on the bench for at least a season. Play the other quarterback they just signed. If that is not possible trade him to Saskatchawan in the CFL.

tommy jonq said:

maybe cutler doesn't want to play for a cheater (neither did bledsoe.) maybe he doesn't want to run the risk of winning a superbowl he has to be ashamed of. or, maybe he learned a lesson from bowlen's surprise knnecapping of mike shanahan and doesn't trust bowlen's "promises." or maybe he's realized that since cheater-in-chief roger goodell is hell-bent on turning the NFL into the NBA anyway, he should just get ahead of the curve and grab whatever money he can while he can still walk without a cane, before some crooked ref ruins his career. or maybe the broncos should have hired a coach who can coach the players they have. you know, like hall of fame shoe in and 2-time superbowl winner mike shanahan.

Richard Michelli said:

Fact of the matter is it's been downhill since Bowlen's firing of Shannahan. You don't fix what's not broken...just needed tweeking. Several of McDaniels moves have made no sense since his arrival...just following the trait of Bowlen's no sense moves. We finally have a QB to take us to a championship since Elway, and they destroy that too. There is no choice now but to trade Cutler. The damage has been done beyond repair. They blew a nice chunk of change on acquiring Simms. I just hope they don't expect him to start.
The Broncos are turning into a real mess, and it's just sad after such a good season in the right direction.

BroncsSeaonTcktHolder said:

Seriously thinking of calling the Broncs to throw in my two cents:

If they retain Cutler, I don't want to waste my money on season tickets.

He's not worth the trouble.

Adrian said:

What a candy a**! The team he wanted to spend his career with? Who does Cutler think he is, Joe Montana, Johnny Unitas, Joe Namath, Emmit Smith, Jerry Rice? Oh yeah, they ended their careers with different teams than they started with. Granted, it was at the end of their careers, but come on "Cry Baby" Cutler, you've never been a winner at any level. What makes you think you should be untouchable? Can you say "Jeff George"?

Stillers Fan said:

Tom Curran, you said it yourself. "Parting with Cutler would be forcing the Broncos to start over at the game's most important position when they thought they had the position filled for the next decade." Why do they have to part ways with Cutler? Josh McDaniels. I know you side with McDaniels and Co. on this issue, but you can't ignore that he dealt with this incorrectly. No doubt that any QB is tradable in the right situation, but the fact remains that your QB has to have confidence in his system and team. Honesty breeds confidence and respect. The fact is McDaniels has been very wishy-washy on the truth. He has admitted and denied his involvment in the trade talks. Whether Cutler is being a baby or not, McDaniels has to set the tone for this team and alienating your players doesn't do that well. Do you think Jeff Fisher would have done this? Mike Tomlin? Mike Holmgren? Those three are great coaches that the players trust. Whether McDaniels was right or not, it doesn't matter. He is risking the trust of his players and, in turn, his job.

Jeff said:

Cutler may not be the most mature QB in the league, but I can certainly understand his position. The QB is the most important player on the team. McFly is in over his head. You just can't screw around with your francise QB.

Dennis said:

I have been in Denver for over 15 years now,
and have been a loyal Bronco's fan. I have been lucky enough to see Two Superbowl Championships, with a Quarterback that was always team first.

Jay Cutler is not the person to lead this team to that high position, he thinks way to much of himself, it seems it's all ME ME ME.

Let him go, and cut your loses he will never be the QB we need to WIN!!!!!

Joe Lillard said:

I guess everyone has forgotten how vilified John Elway was when, as a draft choice, he said he would play baseball before he would play for Baltimore. I definitely want a strong willed QB. What I don't want is a rookie head coach who thinks he can stiff his QB and then expect a good relationship.
