Another Endless Favre Summer Coming?

nfl_favre1.jpgEveryone's least favorite running summer drama may be coming back for another season.

In an oddly timed move, the Jets announced Tuesday night that they have released Brett Favre from the reserve/retirement list.

Favre says it doesn't mean a thing:

"Bus (Cook) and Mike (Tannenbaun) have been talking about this for a while. Nothing has changed. At this time, I am retired and have no intention of returning to football."
"At this time" doesn't last long, especially in Favre's world.   The release has to mean something, no?

Favre is now a free agent, able to sign with whomever he chooses without an interested team giving up compensation to the Jets.  Here are the only possibilities to why Favre would request the release:

1. He wants the freedom to sign with another team, presumably the Vikings.
2. He wants to sign a ceremonial one-day contract to "retire a Packer."  (Highly unlikely considering his contentious relationship with GM Ted Thompson.
3. He wants the freedom to do what he wants ... just in case.
4. His agent, Bus Cook, is attempting to keep all avenues open for Favre ... just in case.

The final two options are the only ones that make sense.  No one sure of Favre's intentions, Favre probably included, but this surely just cracked open another summer of speculation.  Lucky us.

I think Brett Favre is still quite a force when healthy! Thr Cowboys might replicate the Titans of 2008, using the proven veteran to lead them, maybe all the way to the Superbowl. Brett and Wade could be a perfect marriage!

Bill McDonald said:

Sadly for football, this story has become a sordid tale of a man who did not know when he had the football world in his hand and a legacy to match. To have had such a sensational and degrading departure from the Packers, who suffered and hung on too long to his off/on retirement antics, and on to the Jets where he failed to provide the team with their monies worth, tells the story of a guy who did not know when to quit and badly damaged his football reputation. It is a sad story of an ego gone too far.

Jan said:

Leave it alone. His season with the Jets was no worse then some of the seasons he had with the Packers. It all comes down to the fact that the Jet players around him could not step up and make plays when they counted. One man does not make a team. Ask any Packer fan they will tell you he is the best but he also has players willing to make the sacrifices necessary to make big plays when needed.

The NFL's favorite diva getting ready for another comeback tour! OMG! Is he retired? Will he come back? Hijinx and drama await the next chapter of "10 Ways to Destroy an NFL Legacy", coming to a stadium near you!

I am a Packer fan, born and bred, and I completely agree with Mr. McDonalds comments....I couldn't have said it better. I personally feel he badly damaged his football reputation and at the same time lost respect by countless numbers of Green Bay fans. Yes, there are and always will be the faithful #4 fans, but his time is done. Enjoy your retirement Brett...
Now...GO AARON GO!!!!

I have heard from non-Favre fans and those who used to like Favre and they all agree that he should have retired with Green Bay. To all of them I say this. 2008 was not the failure many people claim it to be. He injured his arm and it hampered plan down the stretch. However prior to that, he played well and had 6 TDs in one game, a personal best for Favre. The fact that he played in the games when he was injured is more about Mangini not pulling him to anything else.

I for one enjoyed watching #4 last season and I would enjoy watching him again in 2009. And like Brett, I also take issue with Ted Thompson and would gladly cheer for the Vikings if Brett went there.

The Packer fans don't want to see him win a SB in another city. Thats why they say just retire.

The only packer fans that lost respect for Brett were the "not real Packer fans". If you listened to the drama last year, and truly kept up with Brett and the Packers, the Packers were more to blame than Brett. I really think the story is over, I was excited to see Brett released from the Jets, so the Packers can make up for their mistake and possibly sign Brett to a contract, so he can retire as a Packer. For all you fools out there that want to jump on this comment, please read the whole article and think before you comment. Good luck Brett and Packers, you are both number one in my books.

I wonder if Brett is this indecisive about everything, like when he got married,or when he goes out to buy a new truck. I'd hate to be his salesman.(order it. No,cancel it,uhh wait a minute change the color!!!)

I always enjoy watching Brett play football. Whether he throws for 6 TDs or multiple picks, he sure is exciting to watch!

Possibly Washington???? Could definately see bret in a skins uniform for a year.

I think Brett is a incredible football player and love watching him play. He truely loves the game, it was hard to watch him play for another team, but I would follow any team the whole year. When he was doing great for the Jets or the Packers everyone loved him but a mistakes and shame on him. No.....shame on all you fans if that what you call you all. I love his passion for the game and would love to see him play for one more year because he has heart and the skill.

DM said:

i don't understand why everyone gets all up in arms about this. if favre does want to play and a team wants to sign him, then so be it.

Piccolo said:

Toad, Farve's not that desperate to sign with the Jerry Jones wannabe Synder in Washington. Considering Jones is an Al Davis wannabe crap really does roll down hill :) As a Bear's fan I'd really love to see Brett sign back in the division (Vikes). If he could hang around for two or three more years the NFC Central could be a freak show at QB. Cutler, Rodgers (better than his stats last year), Farve, and maybe/possibly/we'll see about Stafford. Of course that's only if the Bears have anyone step up and play WR!!! :P

dom f. tuzzo said:

Enough with this guy already. The world could be ending but wait, there's a Brett Favre press conference so he could unretire all over again. He's a jerk, an egomaniac, and a totally over-rated reckless QB that what he did best was throw INT's.

It took a while, but us REAL Packer fans finally figured out that it was never about the team or passion for the game, it was all about ME.

I am a die hard Viking fan and I would love to see Favre play for us....not necessarily to see him eat up the PACK but I want to see a good vet QB lead our team and see what we can actually do....I want to see a ring on AD's finger and I would love to see Favre get another....

-KiNGPiN

P.S. the vikings are not cursed because in order to be cursed they would have had to win one first....

Jan,

As a Jet fan who watched the 2008 season implode due to Favre's arrogance in not telling anyone his arm was hurt prior to week 17, I feel confident in saying...take your head out of your ass.....the "Jets' complementary talent" didn't throw those 4-yards-behind-the-receiver AIRBALL PICKS on a regular basis down the stretch...Favre did.

Hero worship is laughable when not tempered with reality.......

Jeff,
Favre continuously denied anything was wrong with his arm right up until week 17.....the fact Mangini took him at his word and let him play speaks to his not feeling comfortable benching a future Hall-of-Famer, poor play and all.

It's not like he said, "Well, let's throw the broke-arm old decrepit out there anyway, Fuck the playoffs and the fans".....

Billy said:

Brett, please stay retired!!!I'm wondering who's thunder he'll steal this time???? when he cry's about giving it up and then making a comeback....AGAIN.

Does anyone remember a movie, from the 1970s I believe, called "They Shoot Horses, Don't They?"
I've had enough. How 'bout you. Has an NFL player ever removed himself from contention for The Pro Football Hall of Fame by retiring multiple times?
"Can you say addiction, Brett?"

Ron said:

Bill McDonald hit the nail on the head. No real Packer fan would side with Favre at this point. If he signs with the Vikings it will damage his legacy beyond repair with most Packer fans. Nobody fears him anymore. Over the last five seasons his productivity declines considerably as the season goes on. 2007 was his last great year. He really screwed up by not quitting after that one.

Claire said:

In the real world, real people have real jobs and usually just making ends meet. In Favre's world he wants it all, has it all, but doesn't need it all.

odanny said:

I have always been a fan of Favre, wouldnt it be fair to assume that about 75% of NFL fans would love to see this guy in a Viking uniform, and about 99.5% of Viking fans would LOVE to see this guy in a Viking uniform.

Please come back Brett, you are a magical player, and you would have a much better team in Minnesota around you then you did in New York. If you really are upset with your treatment in Green Bay, how much better would you feel winning there again?

Bram said:

Green Bay betrayed Favre. I hope he signs with the Vikings and stomps all over Green Bay.

I used to be a die hard Packers Fan.

Barb said:

Green Bay did not betray Favre you idiot. He decided to retire, then not retire, retire than not retire. He did it to himself. Brett's beef with Thompson is over the fact that his buddies did not get to be coach of the Packers or they didn't sign Randy Moss. Brett thinks he's so important that he should be the general manager, quarterback and coach of the Green Bay Packers. The only thing he has done in the last two years is crap on his fans and himself, not the Green Bay Packers

Barb said:

As for you Bram - you never were a diehard GB fan. Because if you were, you would still be. Idiots like you hero worship one player instead of the team. The Packers are about team not one selfish person who now is stinking up the NFL. Maybe he should go play for the Vikings they wouldn't smell him in Minnesota.

Bram said:

They didn't do what was best for the team. If they had they'd been in the playoffs.

People usually tend to resort to name calling when they have no valid points.

Paul said:

I agree with those who say that Favre has really damaged his reputation by his antics. We used to see him as an iron QB, but now we see him as a waffler and a prima donna who is bent on using the system to get what he wants no matter whom he shafts along the way. He shafted the Packers and the Jets. He spit on his loyal Packers fans who idolized him and expected and hoped for so much more. In the end, he turned out to be just another greedy, selfish, self-centered football player and not a man.

Colin said:

Bram,

To think a 2008 Favre-led Packers would've made the playoffs is a joke. Honestly, if you believe that, you have no intellectual understanding of football. Favre could not have led the Packers any better than Rodgers could have with that miserable defense.

Barb is right...you're not a Packer fan, you're a Brett Favre fan.

The Packers had enough of the yearly "I don't know if I want to come back" wallowing from Brett Favre which hampered their free agency & draft moves. He retired, the Packers moved on, and Favre tried to use his status to push his way back onto a team that moved on.

Blow off Favre fans...and good riddance to Favre. I do hope he's in purple and can't wait til Rodgers & the Pack embarrass him badly twice this year.

I usually ignore most useless posts as above b/c most are speaking from love/hate-rid they have either experienced with their "beloved teams"... but thought I would step in for once (oh boy!

Let's look at this potential arrangement as what it "could" do for the Vikings and what this "could" do for Brett, and the risks involved for both.

Vikings- I admit they have no established QB period, fiddled here and there with T-Jack and a backup with more inconstant drives showing NO ability to take over a game in the stretch (and deliver) ..notice I did not say "win the big one". I think that all the Vikings need at that position is an experienced leader that can 'drive the machine'. With a ton of talent surrounding him potentially, the Vikings wouldn't rely on just Brett's talent. Brett has leadership, drive and motivation that the Vikings need, that is the bottom line for the Vikes. Favre is a HUGE upgrade in all departments (sorry T-Jack and Sage Rosen-I-never-bloomed).

Brett- Hey he doesn't "need" the Vikings but it would sure be nice for him to finally have a nice ride to drive (for a change). The Vikings are in my (NY) opinion only 1 ingredient away from being a SB contender.

Minny Risks- Big time media spotlight but I'm sure he won't be organizing any boat trips with strippers, smoking dope or running over a stadium traffic cop. Hehe, hey he might get in a squirt of the water bottle in at a ref (OK, that was funny Randy Moss but I wouldn't want it on my team for real.) Heck the Vikes don't even have to give up a 7th rounder and the pay scale would be minimal and if Brett's "in it to win it" he won't care. Salary Cap hit equal to a "veteran walk on" so to speak. If I were Coach Childress I would be taking Brett to diner tonight!

Brett's Risks- Failure of course but I don't see that at all. Vikings won't rely on him to be Superman, they have mega talent to put on the show, they just need a guy to run the follow-spot which is keep the light on the lead guitarists and vocalists when it's solo time.

Final assessment- Favre if your wanting to go out on a positive note it would seem that this "possible marriage" would work for you with way LESS risk/failure issues than last year with my J-E-T-S. Packers fans are sore and should be and probably are saying more stuff from the surface that from their once beloved hearts. BTW- I see/record games with Directv Superfan and NFL replay and have seen all the Vikings games last year (along with most every other teams including the Bills which my G/F is a fan of).

Cheers all and let the Games begin!
So on a neutral stance and me being an ol Broadway Joe diehard..
Brett and Vikes?? WIN-WIN Situation

I just heard that Rosenfels (Rose-that-never-bloomed)is coming into camp slated QB1 with a so called competition for the actual starting QB1 (not really a big deal since no.1 has to be set upon somebody for stability coming into camp) but Coach Childress you are pipe dreaming or is this just a smoke screen?
