Broncos didn't draft Cutler's replacement

Fear not, angry Broncos fans still pining for Jay Cutler: You may have missed out on Mark Sanchez, but you've got Tom Brandsteter!

Denver traded up into the sixth-round to take the Fresno State product, but any expectations that he will be the "quarterback of the future" in Denver is unfair.

Brandsteter is a late-round developmental prospect, just like Matt Cassel once was.  He's got great size, athleticism, and is very intelligent, but there are a lot of questions about his deep ball.  Again, this sounds just like Cassel.

Brandsteter is coming off a season where he threw more interceptions than touchdowns, and also suffered a torn muscle in his back during the Combine.  He's talented, but there's a reason 173 players were taken before him.

Denver had no other choice but to draft a quarterback.  They only had two on their roster, Kyle Orton and Chris Simms, and needed a third for summer practices.  Brandsteter will likely spend the year as Denver's emergency quarterback or on the practice squad..

Perhaps McDaniels will use some of the same magic pixie dust on Brandstetter that once worked on Tom Brady and Cassel, but we won't know for a few years. Josh McDaniels just hopes that he's around long enough to find out. In the meantime, Broncos fans, Kyle Orton is your quarterback.

Thanks for rubbing it in!! The Broncos are stuck in mediocrity for another few years. Even after 44 years as a Broncos fan, I can still remember being a Bears fan in college - maybe I can become one again.

Don't sweat what hasn't happen yet, okay Denver didn't grab Sanchez although i kind of wish they did BUT the Broncos may surprise a lot of folks I'm gonna stay positive with the picks after all being from NY it's hard to put up with the Jets & Giants fan here, ppl act like just because you live in NY you have too be a NY fan when it comes too football. NOT!!!
GO DENVEZR GO!!!
It'll be the return of the ORANGE CRUSH.

Give me a break. Jay Cutler has a great arm but Vince Young head. To win in the NF you need a complete team. The Patriots are famous for building teams with team players, not whiny problems like Cutler.

Granted Kyle Orton is no Jay Cutler but he did have a superior record as a starter something Jay Cutler cannot boast. Arm strength is great but winning is what matters.

Not saying Kyle Orton is the answer but he is better than most of the starting QB's in the league.

I'm a Charger fan and I'm just glad we don't have to face Cutler two times a year any more. Yes he was whinny, yes he was a little immature but... he can really sling it. He is very tough to defend against. Thank goodness now he's the black and blue division's problem. Now he's only a twice a year problem for the Chargers if the Chargers meet the Bears in the Superbowl, if that happens, who cares.

the broncos are no good and they need to start playing college teams just so that they have a chance. But I think flordia and oklahoma can beat them.

David i bet your team sucks don't hate. And if we do play your team i can't wait for knowshon to let you know whats up punk

JasonLewis, are you serious? You're happy with Orton because he has a better record than Cutler? You don't think there are other circumstances at play there, like the Bears above-average defense and Denver's absolutely terrible defense? Bears fans are laughing all the way to the bank (or Super Bowl) over this trade...

As a Bronco fan from the vertically striped socks era, I bleed orange. I'm glad Cutler is gone. I don't care how strong an arm he has; his head is weak. This team needs a winner, not a whiner. Sure, Kyle Orton may not have the skils that Cutler has, but Orton is a good enough QB and a really fine fellow, near as I can tell. I am really looking forward to the 2009 Broncos. They'll be okay--either 10-6 or 9-7. Check back with me at the end of the season; I'll be smiling.

MikeW said:

"his head is weak"... funny, nobody in Denver was complaining of this during last season while he was BREAKING John Elway's records...

It's pretty clear folks... Chicago got a 26 year old top notch quarterback, a franchise guy who can lead them for the next decade. Denver got a bunch of question marks, most notably a totally unproven, arrogant coach.

MikeT said:

I have watched the Broncos since the 70's. Losing a whinny little kid that gets his feelings hurt every 2 days is not a lose. Better off without the cutler. dont let the door hit him on the way out.
The bears are about to find out how not so great he is.
Lets see what happens this year. It cant be any worse than last year and the 6 before that where denver started fast and faded quickly.

Rod H. said:

Umm... MikeW, no one would even be close to Elway's records if he would've had a coach who new how to use him correctly in his early years. Reeves was a good coach, but didn't know how to use the tallent he had at his disposal. Elway would have all the QB records, that includes Marino's. He most likely could've won a few more Super Bowls too!

DP said:

MikeW - Actually, there were plenty of people complaining in Denver about Cutler's attitude, apparent lack of leadership, and propensity for turnovers (most notably in the red zone). For the record, the passing yardage record he broke that everyone alludes to was Plummer's team record, not Elway's.

Brent said:

Winning personal records does not mean **** if you lose the last 3 games and make the record for the only team in "NFL history" to have a 3 game lead with 3 games to go and lose all 3 games. Cultler's stats were not great by any standard during those games. We are going to be a run first team to set up the pass this year. Kyle will have it easier with that startegy.

Dear Bronco fans, just to make a long story short. Kyle Had a aging front line, No receivers(Hester is still learning the role)and a "Offensive CORD" who is probally calling plays from when he coached the Fighting Illini. Just be lucky ya didn't get stuck with REX.

I keep hearing all this talk of Orton (who I think was a decent player on a subpar team). I think he can do good to great things in Denver, especially with a great left tackle, a strong O line and a great running game. However, I believe when the season begins, people who dont watch ALL fooball and dont listen to the ten thousand analysists, will be shocked to see IT WILL BE Chris Simms starting, not Orton, He's finnally healthy, physically an
MENTALLY and who better to help him REGAIN his confidence than his father and the man who is creadited with both Bradys success and Cassels. JOSH McDANIEl's saw something he liked extremely well in Simms or he would never have gotten Bolen to divy up 6 million for a 2nd string QB. Dont get me wrong, he's no Cuttler, but in this life long Bronco's seeson ticket holder and orange bleeding fan, I BELIEVE THATS A GOOD THING, NOT A BAD ONE! For my money, I'd rather have a very good QB and supporting team rather than a Great QB and no learship on or of the field. As far as I'm concerned, Cutler WONT BE MISSED VERY LONG WHEN WE GET TO THE PLAYOFFS WITH SIMMS.

I saw John Elway play at Stanford and I have also seen Tom Brandsteter play at FSU. Granted he doesn't have the physical gift (the arm) of an Elway but otherwise is actually very reminiscent of him. Most important of all he is a winner, big time! His heart and his head make up for whatever he lacks physically. Don't get me wrong he can throw and move around quite well. The writer of this evaluation has vastly underated this guy! You did well, Bronco faithful!

I think with all the discussions generated by the Broncos not drafting a QB this year, some people may be overlooking the fact that next year there a 2 Heisman Trophy winners (Tim Tebow & Sam Bradford) and possibly a third (Colt McCoy) available. The Broncos could be "laying low" this year to position themselves to potentially be able to draft one of these guys. I know I'd be extremely happy if I were a Denver fan and my team just grabbed one of these guys.

Ed said:

Denver fans keep talking about the whiner and how they are better off. McDaniels has established himself as the team leader and the owner had to suck it up and give him full support.

All he had to do was tell Cutler that a trade had been discussed, but that he was committed to Cutler being the Denver QB in 2009. He still does not understand that you earn the right to be arrogant and he has not done this yet. Not an auspicious start for a young rookie coach.

As a KC fan, I've got to tell you I am delighted with the changes.

Tom remarked in a recent interview that one of the reasons he was having accuracy problems was because of his foot work. Apparently his agent and new trainers detected a problem and he is in the process of correcting it. That is why he appeared to have far better accuracy at the Combine and the East-West game. Remember, his Combine numbers were very good and people were impressed with his accuracy at the Combine. Remember, accuracy has always been one of his big knocks.

Sometimes little things can make a big difference. Sometimes people mature later than others. There are a lot of reasons why an unknown player can suddently turn into a gem. You may have picked up a better player than you think in the 6th round.

Brandsteter played a tough brand of football under Pat Hill. Pat's players get a good dose of what it is like to play in the NFL. Tom is very smart, he is very tough, and very much a team player. Whinners do not play for Pat Hill.

Tom took a lot of criticism while playing at Fresno State and still continued to play and left with not one, but two degrees. One of which was a Masters degree.

He is a nice young man who was an asset to the community and the football program. I would expect him to be no less for the city of Denver.

Tom actually won accalades as a defensive player in high school not for his QB skills. He knows both sides of the ball very well. He is known for reading his progressions very well. Once, again, it wouldn't suprise me if he surpises every one.

His name is actually Tom Brandstater. If your going to hate on him atleast get his name right.

All these Bronco fans who are McDaniels apologists crack me up. Jay Cutler is a whiner? You think that because Mark Schlereth from ESPN told you to think that.

The Broncos aren't bad really, but they sure as heck lost out big time in the Jay Cutler fiasco. So easy to fix and McDaniels in his pride couldn't do it.

Now the Bears have the next "John Elway" You know you said it Bronco fans! My reponse...nah nah nah nah nah. hahahaha

Bob said:

As a Bear Fan, I think both teams did well with the trade. Kyle Orton is not a great QB, but he "IS" good enough to help the Broncos make the playoffs !!!. If the Broncos don't start him, their making a big mistake !!!. I believe ALL Broncos fans will be shocked how good he REALLY is !!. See you guys in the Superbowl !!!.

You forget Cutler is still young. He has alot to learn and someday no matter what you think he is going to be a hall of fame quarterback. For McDaniels he has alot to prove. Remember they have been know to cheat and the only way he will be as good of a coach as Shanahan is if he keeps on cheating.

McDumbass has destroyed the franchise in three short months. Bowlen should be proud! Raider fans and Chief fans have to be loving it. After being a Bronco's fan since 1960, I threw in the towel. I weathered the Wade Phillips era but I can't tolerate this idiocy! The Broncos will be in last place in the AFC West for years to come.

Hey, the season is still a few months away, and Michael Vick is scheduled to be released from prison soon. Maybe Denver fans will be singing WHO LET THE DOGS OUT? come September...
