Sizing up the Cutler Field

NFL_cutler1.jpgNow that Jay Cutler really looks out in Denver, let's size up the field of teams who will be going after him.

The Frontrunners

Detroit Lions: Talk about solving the curse of Bobby Layne!  Detroit has shown interest in Cutler before, and has the picks to get it done.  Denver probably doesn't want the first overall pick because of the huge contract, so perhaps the 20th pick and next year's first could turn the trick.

Tampa Bay Bucs: The Broncos would prefer to send Cutler to the NFC, and Tampa was in on the Cutler sweepstakes when Matt Cassel was involved.  They have the money to get it done, and didn't mind sending draft picks away in the Kellen Winslow deal.

New York Jets: They have a huge need to sell season tickets for their new stadium, not to mention Brett freaking Ratliff as the in-house favorite to start at quarterback.  And they love those diva clients of Bus Cook!
In the Hunt

San Francisco: The number ten overall pick would be a nice starting point in a deal for Cutler, and the 49ers can't be too serious about Shaun Hill as their quarterback of the future. They have the cap room; I like them as a sleeper.

Washington: The Redskins have the desire and the guts to get a deal this big done.  They are not shy about trading draft picks.  The problem will be Cutler's desire for a new contract.  It's hard to see how the Redskins could fit him on the team with their strapped salary cap situation.

Cleveland: The Browns are perhaps the only team with decent young quarterbacks (Derek Anderson, and Brady Quinn) to spare that could help facilitate a deal.

Chicago: They have shown interest in the past and GM Jerry Angelo has made it clear he isn't totally satisfied with Kyle Orton as his quarterback.

Longshots

Jacksonville:
They have been mentioned as possible quarterback suitors, but they should be happy with David Garrard.

Tennessee: Jeff Fisher knows Cutler well, but he has too much money invested at quarterback in Kerry Collins and Vince Young.

Vikings: Once interested in Cutler, they know seem content with Sage Rosenfels.  (gulp.)

Panthers: They make sense on paper, but local reports indicate they won't get involved.

Rams: They have a huge need, but have not been mentioned in Cutler talks.

Seattle: It's a smart idea for them, if they are willing to dump Matt Hasselbeck tomorrow.  If Denver wants Mark Sanchez, for instance, trading for a high pick is the way to go.

Chiefs: It would be wacky to send Matt Cassel away at this point, but it would also make some sense for both sides.  In the end, business between division rivals makes this very unlikely.

Cutler needs to grown up. Denver is sick of the way he and his agent handled the whole matter. Someone needs to tell him that this is the way life is in the fast lane.

A Broncos fan posted this on one of the Denver blogs and I think it is an excellent summation.

"McDaniels blew it by lying to Cutler's face. Bowlen blew it by not declaring Cutler his franchise QB. Cutler blew it by whining about the biz.

I'm putting most of the blame on Bowlen -- after Shanny left, Bowlen said the next coach would not also be the head of football operations, which means Bowlen is the man until he hires a GM who takes control of football operations. Bowlen let McDaniels run Cutler out of town."

I say send him to the Lions. That will teach him to watch what he wishes for.

I've been a Denver fan for many years, even though I live in NJ. So let me say, talk about the Jets and Cutler? Give me a break. The Jets have nothing to offer in return.
It's been all down hill since the idiotic firing of Shanahan, and to replace him with an obviously inexperienced dimwit just out of diapers to run a good veteran franchise team that he's running quickly into the ground just proves the stupidity of Bowlen in his older years.
Just sad direction after finally a good season on the right path.

As a Denver native, Im glad to see some fresh blood in mcdaniels. If he is the coach I think he is, the system matters more than the players, just like shanny being able to put any running back in and get 1000 yards. Shannys play calling was getting so old and predictable it was pathetic. Cutler was being a spoiled whinny brat so he had to go. He was fun to watch with his rocket arm, but to inconsistent and to immature. Go Coach McDaniels and Broncos.

As far as the Panthers, if you are referring to local reports from the three hacks from the Observer, they are clueless. Of course, so is the head coach, so there you have it. We have a pro bowl end who doesn't want to play here, and they have a pro bowl quarterback in the same boat. The have no pass rush, we have a backup qb who plays a starter on TV. It won't happen becuase the Panthers like to run the draw play on 3rd and 20 with 30 seconds left to play down by 7. Creips.

really hate to see Cutler go, he was the best thing about last season, but McD is acting like a rookie in the way he handled this, makes me miss Shanny. Not sure where we will be this season, definitely disappointed in the way things are going, all we really needed was a good D and some healthy RB's and we were SB bound, too bad

I used to be a sportscaster in Denver during the early Elway years. McDaniels is the problem here, not Cutler. His first spring workout hadn't even happend and McDaniels had already "fixed" the only part of the Broncos that wasn't broken. If Bowlen didn't have such an ego, he would have booted McDaniels for being incompetent, not let Cutler get away. Complain about pampered atheletes being babies all you want, but these teams show no loyalty at all to players, and players' short careers are ticking away every minute. Cutler proved his worth, and McDaniel pissed on him. Cutler can't afford to play for a coach that has shown a lack of support for him. Some things are like eggs: once broken, there's no putting them back together. Such is trust between a QB and coach in the NFL and the coach is in charge and has to know how to solve bruised egos, misunderstandings and such. Bill Callahan is an example of a guy who can't handle player "issues". Further, the dimwit McDaniel tried to solve the problem via text message and phone calls, he apparently doesn't have the onions to admit he blew it and face his QB. McDaniel is yet another in the long, long line of Patriot underlings who are busts as head coaches. Bronco fans, of which I am one ( since 1980, now, but I may go with Cutler ) will soon find this out. It's Wade Phillips all over again. Oh yeah..Shanahan absolutely had to go. No question. He probably knew he'd run out of gas. He is not a rebuilder, like Dan Reeves. It was insane to make Shanahan GM as well as coach. He is a fine tuner, which Reeves was not. Bringing Reeves back would have been a better choice that this clown shoes the Broncos are stuck with.

I knew it. Pat Bowlen is envious of the Raiders and Al's management techniques. Perfect imitation Pat... All you need is the sweat suit and the glasses with the little chain.

shanahan didn't "leave" denver. he was fired in the most graceless way imaginable. i mean, i'm getting sympathy from raider fans. that's almost as bad as sympathy from bears fans.

Keep Cutler at all costs. McDaniels needs to go. Maybe Bowlen needs to be removed from football also. Did McDaniels work at AIG or the 3 automakers? Is he wanting a government bailout?

Chrisf3001 said:

Trade Jay already. Get a high draft pick for him, pick up one of the USC linebackers. Sign Jeff Garcia out of the free agency. He is a proven winner everywhere he goes. He knows how to get his stars the ball so Marshall will still be happy, if he stays out of trouble. The Broncos have two excellent slot recievers. Why wouldnt this work? Im looking forward to rebuilding!

As a Denverite since I was 4 (I consider myself a native) and a long time Broncos fan...I say good riddance to Jay Cutler. I've been treated by superiors in my job a lot worse than he ever is and I don't go cry in my corner and ignore their calls...and I certainly don't get paid millions. Grow up...you make millions more than you will ever be worth and you get your panties in a wad when the higher ups don't kiss your ass? Welcome to the real world, buddy. As for where Jake can go? I have an answer...and it doesn't involve any other NFL teams.

Good Call Bowlen. Way to step in and take control (finally). All is not lost in losing Cutler, he is a little punk B*@tch. Lets give Bubby his # back, get Garcia, groom Stafford, hire Elway, and build the D. McJaygate needs to end, Broncos need to win the West back and ultimately bring home the Lombardi Trophy!

rick said:

I think he should be sent to play for Detroit - then he will have more reasons to "whine".

That should make him happy too, since since Cutler seems to enjoy "whining"!

Ioniadawg said:

As a Lion's fan, I say you guys can keep Cutler or trade him to somebody else. Daunte Culpepper is going to do just fine in Detroit this year. We need our draft picks to rebuild our defense and O line. Will need picks again next year as well. Sounds like Denver is going to be in for a rough ride with a Millen-clone as head coach.

Trade Jay Cutler to Buffalo for Trent Edwards. Trent is a smart QB who would benefit greatly from the coaching in Denver. Jay would get the experience of throwing deep to T.O. and Lee Evans. Am I missing anything with this trade proposal?

Jay Cutler said:

Dear Efe, please go get some toilet paper. Jay

mac d. if anyone can fill the void of a high maintainence, loose-cannon qb, it's me. call me. -jeff

Richard Head said:

@ Tom in Honolulu: If you think Trent Edwards is of equivalent trade value to Jay Cutler... back away from the crack pipe.

Any team trading for Cutler will need to offer a starting quarterback AND either a first or second round pick, depending on the quality and age of the trade partner.

For example, if Seattle got into this mix (rumors abound that Denver wants Sanchez, and Seattle has the draft pick to make that happen), the trade would likely involve Hasselbeck, Seattle's 1st round pick (#4) and a mid-round pick for Jay Cutler. And that trade makes a lot of sense on both sides - Seattle gets Cutler, Denver gets a starting quarterback and a quarterback of the future.

25-year old Pro Bowl quarterbacks are invaluable and expensive.

Tchalla said:

What I can't get over is how immature Cutler is. For crying out loud, people are losing their jobs at records rates, and he has the balls to whine that he wasn't informed that his name was brought up in rumors. Now the cry-baby won't answer his phone, but he didn't want it to get this far... He has a losing record, and judging by his character, he too is a loser. Ship him to the Aussie Football League and let him whine down there. At least Denver could get a real player for their trouble that way.

I think Jay would make a fine backup to Phillip Rivers in San Diego

JohnnyB said:

I think the loser in this scenario is Cutler so far. The entire Bronco team and organization will rally around their new coach. While Jay will only have himself, a skeptical new team and his rocket arm to prove his point to. I believe this deal will get done with 5 teams and occur around the NFL Draft. The teams are Cleveland, New England, Tampa Bay, Carolina and Chicago.

1. Most likely scenario: Cutler to Cleveland for Brady Quinn, Derek Anderson and a #1, #2, or #3 draft pick. Denver trades Derek Anderson to Tampa Bay or Carolina for a #1 or #2 draft pick in a trade and swap (with maybe, in a stretch, a disgruntled Julius Peppers thrown into a Carolina deal for pass rusher Ellis Dumerville). Brady Quinn learned the McDaniel system under Charlie Weis and Romeo Crennel and is ready to start and star in the NFL. With all of the free agent moves Denver has already made, and the stockpile of draft choices (to load up on defensive talent) this scenario would make them a playoff team in 2009 and a Super Bowl contender in '09 or '2010. In reality though, I don't think Carolina would let Peppers go that easy. They would have a real shot at the Super Bowl this year by keeping him and adding a QB with Derek Anderson's talent level.

2. Denver trades Cutler to New England in a trade and swap deal for 2nd year QB kevin O'Connell (whom McDaniels would die for) and a #1 pick. New England then swaps Cutler and Adalius Thomas to Carolina for Julius Peppers and a #1 draft pick. New england signs Jason Taylor as a free agent and goes on to win the Super Bowl in 2009 if Brady and Moss stays healthy. For many of you who don't know him yet; O'Connel is a big 6'6", cannon armed, very mobile QB in the mold of Joe Flacco and Ben Rothlesberger. Drafted in the 3rd round in 2008, he clearly outplayed Matt Cassel in preseason as a rookie last year. And all of the Patriot fans thought he had beaten Cassel out for the #2 spot behind Brady. It was only because O'Connell was a rookie that Belichick kept Cassel around (luckily). But McDaniels was clearly intrigued by O'Connels potential. His arm is on a scale like Cutler's and he is much more mobile than Brady. He is the guy Josh Mc really wants if he can steal him from the Pats. That's a big if however. Because the Patriots obviously feel O'Connell is now ready to start if Brady goes down again (that's why they let Cassel go so fast). O'Connell is a very exciting kid to watch play. He is big, fast, smart and accurate. He has a fiery "Irish" personality. And he's a flat out winner, just like Brady. Denver would forget Cutler after 1 game if the Broncos could pair him up with McDaniel.

3. Denver trades Cutler to Tampa Bay, Chicago or San Francisco for Draft choices and nondescript players like Kyle Orton, Alex Smith or who knows what. Either way, those are the 5 teams I see who are in play with the Broncos, with the Cleveland and New England Scenarios being the most intriguing.

With Brady's longevity being iffy, I'm not sure they would part
