Why don't they play this way all the time?

Barring a shocking loss by either girl on Thursday, we'll have another final between the Williams sisters. They are just smoking everyone right now, sometimes laughably. Victoria Azarenka was actually laughing during her match with Serena today after about the 10th rocket serve that nearly knocked her over (she also applauded one absurd running forehand winner). On another occasion, Azarenka actually swung and missed on a second serve.

Elena Dementieva cruised in her quarterfinal today, but she'll be lucky to take one set in the semis if Serena is half as good as she was today.

Venus will take on Safina in the other semifinal, but the talented headcase almost melted down today and only prevailed because her opponent wasn't all that great. Venus will be in her head from the start, which is good for viewers because Safina will be screaming obscenities in Russian all day.

But while it's impressive to watch Serena and Venus dominate and play amazing tennis, isn't it a tad perplexing at the same time? Why haven't they been able to dominate like this all the time? Shouldn't we be at the point where they both have as many Grand Slams as Federer? I realize that different surfaces can even things out, but bottom line is that both, despite their greatness, never reached their full potential.

At a time when both Serena and Venus are the grand dames of their sport, were ushered in at an era where Graf, Seles still played, outlasted the Capriati's, Henins, Clijsters and are fending off the new breed in Azarenkas, Sharapovas, you choose to dwell on this imaginary number of potential. Why is it that neither sister can truly receive the respect they deserve for what they've accomplished? They were laughed at due to their parents as coaches and how they came into tennis and look at how far they've gone. Now they can't even have their records stand alone but are compared to what could have been - they weren't respected when they came in, then they started dominating and these ever so high standards of success were put up so that they still wouldn't receive the respect they deserve - that is utter crap and it needs to stop.

Why ask such an asinine question? If they dominated the way they did from 00-03 there would be the usual vocal cries of women's tennis having no depth and that it's boring to watch power tennis all the time.

Get real.

If they played this well all of the time you'd be writing a blog about why no other women could step up and if they were beaten you'd usher in a new "star" with the eagerness of a randy teenage boy.

Maria Sharapova ring a bell? She beat an injured Serena in 03 and she was all we heard about for the next three to four years, from people like you. She was white, blonde, and who cares if she's Russian?

You say you're perplexed, but really you're being willfully ignorant. They've outlasted all their competition through injuries, tragedy, and determination. Respect them for what they've given the game and what they still are giving.

To want more is greedy and to actually act like the press would appreciate them dominating again is ridiculous. They'd eat Venus and Serena alive just as they did years before.

Who are you kidding...? The Wms kids have raked $50M plus outta the game and remain two of the least interesting players to watch of all time, except in pure psychobabbledrama terms. I'm sure they think they've "given back" tons to everybody lucky enough to watch them, but they're both just coddled, spoiled sports brats w/a weird Jehovah's Witness twist thrown in. Who cares anymore or takes them seriously as people... eh?

I think Nikki Dai said it correctly. The sports press doesn't want to take the Williams sisters seriously. Also they portray them as a semi joke. They are thought of as people who have made it into a world they are not wanted nor do they belong, and all because they are inner city African Americans. If these women were white, and blonde in particular, the press would practically be panting and drooling over every wave of their rackets.
