Young wants out if Titans won't play him

nfl_young.jpgVince Young has made a few missteps as a pro, but he's notably kept quiet since losing his starting job to Kerry Collins.  Perhaps he hasn't been as engaged as a backup as the Titans would like, but he hasn't ruffled any feathers. Until now.

Speaking to Baltimore station WMAR-TV, Young had this to say about his role as a backup:

"I'm being very competitive, competing for the job, and I'll let coach Fisher make his own decision after that.  Definitely I want to be in there playing ball. ... At the same time, if those guys don't want me to be in there, it's time for me to make a career change for myself.  Because the fact is I'm ready to play ball.  And if they're not ready for me to play ball, someone is."
Young shouldn't be so sure. His stock around the NFL has reach a nadir, and it's unlikely there are any teams just waiting to hand him the keys to the franchise.  With a huge scheduled raise coming in 2010, Young seems likely to be looking for a job next off-season.

Young would be well served to work hard, shut his yapper again, and wait for Collins' inevitable decline.  While he may no longer be the future in Tennessee, Young's best chance to rehab his value and "play ball" again will be with the Titans this year.

Until he steps on the field again, there will remain a lot of questions about Young's game, especially his accuracy and decision making.  But there are even more concerns about his maturity level.  Comments like this won't help.

He WANTS to get on the field again as soon as possible, so LET HIM! Then you can debate those questions you pose. Remember, he was Rookie of the Year after all and was playing pretty darn well before the knee injury. He wants the opportunity to answer his critics sooner rather than later- there is nothing wrong with that.

Slugger said:

When will white sports writers learn to do anything but tell black athletes to keep their mouths shut? Frank Isola of the Daily News recently wrote the same thing about Dwight Howard when he said the team lost because he didn't get the ball in the fourth quarter of a game. That writer looked like a fool when Howard got the ball in the next game and had 23 points and 22 rebounds. And of course Muhammed Ali was told to shut up in his prime. I would tell these writers it is they who should shut up or tell the athlete that to their face, in which case the writers will be permanently shut up.

Slugger,

Don't turn this into racial thing.

I am a HUGE Titans fan... And a big Vince Young supporter, and can't wait for him to come back better than ever... But I agree that he needs to shut his mouth. Talking isn't going to get him anywhere and it will actually probably only hurt his standing with the team. He needs to shut his mouth and get to working so he is ready when the time comes. There shouldn't be anymore excuses...

Slugger,

just as many white atheletes are told to keep their mouths shut as black ones. the conspiracy theory that the whole world is against black atheletes is crazy. seriously, lebron and kobe dominate every headline there is. it's a matter of him not having any reason to make any noise that he needs to keep quiet. while he may have been ROY look at his stats, they were less than impressive.

Vince started off well enough, but like most Texas recruits, he was a bust. I could go to the public media, to a city hall conference and tell them my boss makes poor choices and I'll take my talents elsewhere if I don't get my way. But I'm fairly certain that would just get me fired.

Gary said:

Well, I can only say one thing since I don't care if he is blue, green, black or white and if he was all that good he would be starting. Vince just needs to go out there and prove he deserves to be the starter and if not let some else play.

Titan Fan said:

I have been a Titan's fan ever since they came to Tennessee from Houston. However, I feel that Vince Young is not the QB for us. Just when we finally got rid of Steve McNair we got Vince Young to replace him. I think his game play is below par and he will never be a great QB. I say trade him away, finish this season w/ Collins and get a new QB in next years draft.

football fan said:

Young needs to grow up and just wait for his time to come so he can play ball. He needs to stop whinning and thinking just because he was rookie of the year that the ball should be handed to him on a plate!

Doc said:

Compare VY to Joe Flaco or Matt Ryan.

Enough said.

Prove it on the Field with Leadership. VY seems to think the job should be handed to him, when frankly Collins proved last year he was a better quarterback.

Same thing goes in AZ.

Luce said:

The only thing dumber then Young opening his mouth is people opening their mouth to throw the race card around when it isn't there. It isn't about race, was never about race and the only one bringing up race is someone complaining about "white" people. Collins earned the right to play by not complaining, not having off the field issues and just throwing the ball. Maybe Vince should take note.

Morris Berry said:

Rush Limbaugh said it best the NFL is still looking for that great black quarterback. Maybe Obama should try out the media thinks he walks on water anyway!

Jack C. said:

I gave up on Young when, after a single season in the NFL, he declared that there wasn't anybody that could teach him anything about football.

Just another arrogant, idiot, thinks-he's-entitled-to-it-all.

It's interesting that all your life you prepare to lead a team and somehow you should prove your team spirit by sitting quietly on a bench and letting someone you know you are better than start ahead of you. How fustrating is that when your situation defies logic? Sit and shut up why? if he never says he's ready to take on the responsibility of being the starter how would TN fans react to it once he's presented the opportunity? Go ahead and avail yourself of your first amendement priveleges and make your intentions known. It's only bad behavior if it interupts the dynamics of team chemistry saying you want to start shouldnt do that. It may be more gratifying to other teammates that support him in this endeavor. I don't see TN making Kerry Collins there long term starting QB if they drafted this kid to be the future of this team put him back in the starting role. Look at Bradshaw when Gilliam started ahead of him on the depth chart and his erratic play his first few years in the league from LSU. How does he benefit by sitting quietly on the bench? I agree with Slugger let him speak up now on his desire to play again there's nothing to be gained by sitting quietly and allowing others to dictate your path. Oh and if his stock or upside is'nt all that great let TN see what other teams think of his abilty to serve as a franchise qb by electing to trade him. I'm sure there will be a number of teams that will be takers for his services at qb.

titanman931 said:

Vince Young has been a bust so far. When he was at Texas he did so well because he was bigger than defensive backs and could outrun defensive lineman, he can't do that in the pro's. The only reason he was drafted was Bud Adams thought he was going to stick it to Houston, well hindsight is 20/20 but bad decision. The best QB he could have taken was just down the road at Vanderbilt, and now I hope he does well with the Bears.

Clinton said:

Man with the exception of a few people, none of you really must not understand what it is to be a competitor. Vince is within his rights in saying he wants to start. If Tennessee is not ready for him to play then trade him and fill in a spot on the roster that you need. Real athletes speak up and are pro-active. Just sitting back and saying nothing is not what real winners do. He isn't harming the team in anyway. If he keeps his mouth shut then you people would start saying that he doesn't have the drive and will to play and that he is just being a bum on the bench that Tennessee should get rid of.

Tyler said:

Vince Young needs to quit trying to prove he is a prototype pocket passer and do what he did at Texas - just win. Use those legs to open up the passing lanes, if the receiver is open dump it, if not take off for ten to twenty yards and run out of bounds. This hanging in there like Drew Bledsoe is not who he is. He is a faster stronger version of Randall Cunningham.

Bo said:

Where does this guy get off making statements like that to a Baltimore TV station? Does he think that the station will have some magical influence over Coach Fisher's QB selection? It appears that decision making (on and off the field)will continue to haunt him. He was a high draft choice and is being paid a lot of money. If he can't beat out a nearly 40 year old QB on the field, then he does not deserve to start. Not to worry though, Al Davis will always take him.

I see in color ... not black and white said:

He is not faster than Cunningham … Randal ran a 4.4 / 40. Young can barely break 4.6. Vince Young is a stronger, faster version of Steve Young. If Vince can get his head on straight and act like a professional he’ll get his chance in this league.

Oh … and by the way … Bradshaw played at Louisiana Tech … not LSU.

I think that ever since VY played like a kid last season, which promted COllins to the starting position, he has been showing his true colors. He needs to mature! His playing ability is sic, but his attitude is the pitts. I was a season ticket holder for the Oilers, luv-ed the Blue and I still love them(even tho they are named the Titans. I like VY too. My advise, suck it up, get your feelings off your shoulders VY and wait for your attitude to catch up with your playing ability.

Some other guy said:

Um, what team would trade assets or players for VY then have to pay him 4 mil salary? And essentially he would be a loaner as his contract is 12 million next year. They could just wait till next year and sign him. If VY was even willing to renegotiate to something like 1 mil, he could get traded instantly. Titans can't even get a 5th rounder for VY. Remember, he is getting smoken by Kerry Collins in practice.

Morris Berry?? For REAL???

Joe in Atlanta has a good point - VY is just stepping up to the plate. He wants a real shot agian and he's just trying to make sure he gets it. He'l get it this preseason and I'm certain that coach will start whomever he feels gives the team the best chance. The macho bravado is entertaining.

VY was voted NFL rookie of the year in 2008 folks. Last season (2009) was only his second year wasn't it? How is he "...a bust so far..."? So what he succumbed to pressure. We'll see this upcoming preseason it really is a story to watch. I'll be rooting for him but his fate is in his own hands (good pun huh?!)

Vince Young has seen his best years... in Texas. He's not prepared to 'earn' the starting job, he wants it given to him. Sorry Vinny, it doesn't work like that, and Jeff Fisher is a smart man. If you were the better QB, you'd be starting. Right now, you're not.

justsomeguyonthenet said:

'Young seems likely to be looking for a job next off-season.'

Is Gregg Rosenthal stupid?

So...Vince is out next year anyways...but should just shut up about it in the meantime?

Why, exactly?

KC said:

It's not about him wanting to start. Wanting to play, and competing to play is fine. But that quote of his can be broken down into 2 parts. The first 2 sentences fit with the competing for playing time, which is a good thing.

It's the 2nd half that just lays on the ENTITLEMENT rap very heavily.

"if those guys don't want me to be in there..." The rest of the players and coaches want the best player in there, black or white doesn't matter.

"Because the fact is I'm ready to play ball. And if they're not ready for me to play ball, someone is." In his mind, he's already the best QB on the team, and he either starts there or some other team will HAND him a starting position.

That's the problem with the statement and why he should shut up.

Great athletes are always cocky. It's part of being the best. It's what teams look for. The best athletes have always run their mouths, bragging about what they have worked so hard to show us and most times proved to us. VY is a fantastic QB. He proved it in high school and on the college level. This kid almost single handedly beat USC. Let me rephrase that. He single handedly destroyed USC in the championship game. We praised him for it. We believed in him when he stated he should have been the Heisman winner. We complain about T.O. in Dallas but he has proved time and time again he is one of the greatest WR in the game ever. I didn't notice anyone not wanting T.O. after the 49'ers, Eagle's, and now Dallas. VY should continue talk, yell, stomp, if you have to. I believe in you. Like most of the people who work for me, I tell them to speak up because sometimes we may not be paying attention as managers. You were Rookie of the Year. You did take the team to the playoffs your first year. You did have a 5-2 record even when you were replaced. You had a mental lapse but none of us writing here can understand the pressure you endure or you may place on yourself, being the great competitor you are. So, don't listen to anyone. Speak up about where you feel you should be but like all great athletes who talk, show us.

You can't let this stuff play out in the media. Like in life, there is a chain of command, follow it. If you want to play, keep it in house, let it be known to your QB coach, OC, and they will get to the Head Coach

TheVM said:

I loved Randle Cunningham, so I understand why so many of you like to watch VY and Mike Vick do their thing; it's fun to watch. But there is something that you Young and Vick apologists out there have failed to admit for many years now; no team has won the Superbowl with a run-dominant QB since Superbowl 2 (and that was with Bart Starr, who I would argue was NOT, in fact, a run-dominant QB, with 152 career passing TDs and only 15 rushing). The only other ones who even come close to this definition are Steve Young (SB 29 winner and most effecient passer in NFL history) and Doug Williams (4 TD PASSES in SB 22).

And for those of you out there who read "run-dominant QB" as "black QB", first of all, shame on you. Second of all, remember that the greatest statistical pro QB of all time is a gentleman named Warren Moon, a guy who could run if he had to, he just never had to because of his superior vision, arm, and decision making. Racially sensitive fans should not be rooting for the next Vick or Young or even Cunningham; they should be rooting for the next Warren Moon.

What I'm getting at is...be careful what you wish for, Vince Young fans. If you get your way, the Titans could end up being a wildly entertaining perennial non-competitor.

Vince Young has shown no promise as a starting QB since he entered the league.
One of the reasons Ten made the playoffs last year was due to smart play by a smart QB.
Young has never had the ability to make smart decesions in the heat of the game.

HornInsider said:

Vince is a dual qb all the way. It is the Titans who have dropped the ball NOT Vince. The Titans are trying to make Vince a drop back pro set type qb. He will NEVER be successful in this type of offense. If the Titans won't let him run because they are scared of him getting injured they need to trade him. VY will be very successful for another team that allows him to run which opens up the passing game for him. In his Rookie of the Year season the Titans let him run and few could stop him.

Insight said:

Kerry Collins had his year and his chance. He is old and he won't make it thru the season. Tennessee better have VY ready to play if they hope to make the playoffs. Give the kid time and a little more experience and he can play the position as well as anybody.

Austen said:

In my opinion, there is nothing wrong with his comments, in fact he is absolutely correct in his statement. A winner wants the ball. Vince Young is a winner, bottom line. Whether or not he makes it as an elite QB in the NFL will not change that fact. The man deserves his chance and sitting idley by will not present him with that opportunity. Think about it, you are blasting a guy because he wants to play the game he loves. He is not slamming Collins, he is not slamming the Titans, all he is doing is expressing his interest in playing the game he loves. I believe the Titans needs to go back to him if they want to have a chance to be successfull long term.

bill_in_houston said:

Sure he is within his rights to speak his mind. I'm not sure there are a host of teams willing to pick up his $12M dollar salary next year. So my guess is if he wants to even be on a team he will have to renegotiate. He will get another chance, he better make sure he is in positiion to take advantage of it. If he fails in his next opportunity it may be his last, if he succeeds he could be on his way to a promsing career.

Unfortunately for VY, before he got to the NFL he was a man among boys. He could run over virtually everyone. Now he can't so he has to adapt to thrive. He probably can if he puts his mind to it and sticks it out.

Kerry Collins is one step from the old folks home. He is not the future for TN. I love all the talk about how VY has never done anything and can't succeed. To all you let Vince be Vince People. The most rushing yards by a quarterback in a superbowl winning season is 375 yards. Run first quarterbacks don't win, especially those that can't read a defence. I bet the Titans put more weight on his Wonderlic score when considering him for the draft. He doesn't have the mental ability needed to be a successful NFL quarterback.

Ummm - did you ever see him play ball? Ask Michigan, USC and Ohio State what they think. A college record of 30-2 indicates a winner.
