Nadal Out of Masters Party
It is an absolute shame that the best player in the world has to pull out of the Shanghai Masters Cup due to an injury. We all know that the season is too long, and that this injury is a direct result of Rafa being worn down by 11 straight months of grinding. If the tournament were in October, he would've won, and had a great off season to enjoy a legendary season...but that's not the case, and now the event is watered down with the absence of Rafa. This is sad for tennis, and I feel bad for Nadal....It's symbolic that this happened during the FINAL event of the year...implying that if the schedule had been just TWO or THREE weeks shorter, Nadal would be in! So now Gilles Simon enters the draw for his first ever Masters Cup; unfortunately it's quite evident that he's not as big a draw as Nadal.
PS- Note that I feel bad for Nadal in "tennis terms," as I am well aware that there are other people struggling with "real world work problems" MUCH worse than this....people who never get a vacation and don't get millions of dollars like Rafa....just a fitting thought to add on the Eve of the Presidential Election!

About this blog
Harry Cicma tackles the hot topics in tennis, sharing his insight on the favorites, tournament news and players to watch. Harry was ranked for three years on the ATP Tour doubles circuit and played four years of NCAA Division-I tennis at Rutgers University. He now covers all sports as a TV producer/anchor on NBC in Southern New England.
This is the stupidest story I have ever read. There are people out there working 2 or 3 jobs that never get a vacation and they struggle to live in this economy. Does Harry Cicma really expect anyone to feel sympathy to Nadal, who made 6.7 million this year. It is a little disappointing Nadal can't be in the final event of the year but there will be other chances - I mean let's put this in perspective - after all it is simply a tennis game.
Dave, Thanks for writing. I understand what you're saying and appreciate your opinion...It's right on the money. However, you're talking to a guy who had to sleep on an air mattress for 3 years after college making $8 an hour [couldn't afford a real bed or place to live]; and who's whole family came to the USA from Ellis Island with NOTHING and put themselves through college on waiter wages; I'm sure many of us share those stories. So in the "tennis world," terms, I feel bad for Nadal and all the other guys who have to deal with this long schedule... Pertaining to the sport, most of the reason many of us follow it is to get away from the "real world problems" facing us each day at work and in life...it gives us a chance to have fun and dream a little bit....So please don't think that I'm confusing the tennis world with the "real business world" that most of us all work in each day....our terrible US economic state is a different topic than tennis (a much more serious topic)..Thanks again for the comment -Harry
