Off to Miami - Stay tuned

Dear Friends and Tennis Talk Colleagues,

I'm heading to Key Biscayne for the Ericsson.  Stay tuned for more great interviews and footage....it should be an excellent event.  Harry C.

Key Biscayne Report

I like Roddick's chances, he beat Federer in Key Biscayne last year, and loves playing in the world's "5th Grand Slam."  A-Rod may not win the event, but he'll give a great showing.  Of course there are the usual suspects, Nadal, Novak, Federer and Murray.  And for the women, Venus and Serena.

Singles - Final
[1] R Nadal (ESP) d [4] A Murray (GBR) 61 62

SINGLES FINAL - NADAL CAPTURES 13TH ATP WORLD TOUR MASTERS 1000 TITLE

  • World No. 1 Rafael Nadal recaptured the BNP Paribas Open title after posting an overwhelming 6-1, 6-2 victory over Andy Murray on a windy Sunday in Indian Wells. He collects $605,500 and 1000 South African Airways 2009 ATP Rankings points as the winner of the first ATP World Tour Masters 1000 tennis tournament of the 2009 season.
  • World No. 4 Murray, who advanced to the BNP Paribas Open for the first time after defeating Roger Federer in the semi-finals, proved no match for Nadal. The ATP World Tour Champion won the final five games of each set as he converted four of his five break point chances during the one-hour, 20-minute match.
  • The 22-year-old Spaniard won his first BNP Paribas Open title in 2007, but fell short of the title defence last year when he lost to eventual champion Novak Djokovic in the semi-finals. He escaped a fourth-round upset this past week when he saved five match points in a 3-6, 7-6(5), 6-0 win over Argentine David Nalbandian.
  • Nadal has now won 13 ATP World Tour Masters 1000 titles (13-4 in finals), placing him just one behind Federer and four behind all-time leader Andre Agassi. He has won at least two ATP World Tour Masters 1000 titles in each of the past four years, capturing a personal-best four in 2005.
  • He moves into a tie with Arthur Ashe and Mats Wilander for 16th place on the Open Era titles list after improving to a 33-9 record in ATP World Tour finals. He also improves to a 21-2 season record and a 6-2 mark in the head-to-head series against Murray.
  • Nadal, who won the 2009 Australian Open title with a five-set win over Federer, is the fifth player to win two titles on the ATP World Tour this season (Murray, Tsonga, Robredo, Stepanek). He also reached the final at the ATP World Tour 500 tennis tournament in Rotterdam last month, injuring his right knee in a three-set loss to Murray.
  • Nadal next heads to Miami for the second ATP World Tour Masters 1000 tennis tournament, the Sony Ericsson Open, where he is a two-time finalist (2005, '08). Six different players have won the two hard-court events in the same year: Federer (2005-06), Agassi (2001), Rios (1998), Sampras (1994), Chang (1992) and Courier (1991).
  • The final marked Murray's most lopsided loss since he fell to Marcos Baghdatis by the same score in August 2007 in the first round of the ATP World Tour Masters 1000 tournament in Cincinnati.
  • The 21-year-old Scot was looking to become the first British player to win the BNP Paribas Open title. Tim Henman finished runner-up at this event in 2002 (l. to Hewitt) and '04 (l. to Federer), and Rusedski in 1998 (l. to Rios). Murray won his first two ATP World Tour Masters 1000 titles last year at Cincinnati (d. Djokovic) and Madrid (d. Simon).
  • Murray falls to a 20-2 season record with his first loss against a Top 10 player this season (4-1). He defeated Federer and Andy Roddick en route to the Doha title in his season opener, and then clinched his 10th ATP World Tour title last month in Rotterdam.
  • A total of 15,943 people attended the final, taking the attendance level for the two-week men's and women's combined event to a tournament record 332,498.

WHAT THE PLAYERS SAID

Nadal: "The conditions today were really difficult, but I think I have good strategy and I played a really good match with those conditions. Probably Andy didn't play his best because of the conditions, but I think I played a really complete match, moving very well. I never stop the legs during all the match, and I think that was the key today."

On beating Murray: "Andy was the only big top player I didn't [beat] this year, so it's [an] important win for me. But anyway, the most important thing for me is [to] win the title, any way, the opponent in the final."

"When I go to the tournament, I play first round and I don't know if I'm going to win. You never know what's going on in two months, in five months, in seven months. So it's very difficult to play during all the year at the same level, your best level. If I am playing at my best level, if Murray has a good day, he has a good chance to beat me or Federer or Djokovic or a lot of players. So every tournament is really tough."

Murray: "It was tough. I haven't played in conditions as windy as that for quite a long time. Rafa dealt with it very well. He hit the ball cleaner and just seemed to get himself in better positions than I did. Then you don't necessarily want to be doing a whole lot of defending and running. You want to be in the best position possible to hit each ball, and I wasn't. That's why he managed to dictate most of the points."

"I don't feel like I'm that disappointed just now with how the week went, because I wasn't expecting to do that well.  I obviously had some very good wins. I got a lot of the matches that I wasn't necessarily expecting, so going into Miami I'm going to be better prepared than I thought. Obviously today was not my best day, but I'll definitely get over it, because I'm guessing I'm not going to play in those conditions each week."

Vera wins Indian Wells

Vera Zvonareva holds her seeding with a victory over Ana Ivanovic, and her second title of the season.  I still feel that it was an upset, as Ivanovic has the "Grand Slam experience" which makes her more of a prime time player, regardless; Vera is on the rise in 2009

Doubles - Final (played Saturday)
Azarenka/Zvonareva (BLR/RUS) d. Dulko/Peer (ARG/ISR) 64 36 105 (Match TB)

Final Facts
- Zvonareva wins her second Sony Ericsson WTA Tour singles title of the year (having won Pattaya City in February) and the ninth of her career; she is now 9-11 lifetime in Tour singles finals.
- Zvonareva is the second player ever to win both the singles and doubles titles at the BNP Paribas Open, after Lindsay Davenport (who did it twice, in 1997 and 2000).
- Ivanovic is now 8-4 lifetime in Tour singles finals; this was her first final since winning her eighth and most recent Tour singles title at Linz last October.
- Zvonareva and Ivanovic are now tied, 4-4, in their career head-to-head.
- By virtue of their respective performances, Zvonareva is projected to rise from No.6 to No.5 on the new rankings (a return to her career-high) while Ivanovic is projected to remain at No.7 (her career-high is No.1).
- Azarenka and Zvonareva win their first doubles title together in only their second outing (they reached the third round of the Australian Open earlier this year); Azarenka now has three Tour doubles titles to her name while Zvonareva has five.

Final Quotes
Vera Zvonareva, 2009 BNP Paribas Open singles champion:
"It's amazing. It's a great feeling to win such a big event. I'm still a little bit in the match. I think I did a great job. Even though I made some mistakes and had some frustrating points with the wind, I was still trying to concentrate. I was fighting for every point, no matter what. Even if I was down 0-40 in a game I played for it. Maybe I was better at doing that today than Ana."

Ana Ivanovic, 2009 BNP Paribas Open singles runner-up:
"I'm a little bit disappointed I could be up there with Martina [Navratilova] winning it a couple of years in a row, but I enjoyed playing here. I love coming to the desert. Everything is so easy going. I'm very thrilled I managed to make the final again and I'm excited to come back next year."

Cicma: Rafter Returns!

One of the gutsiest stories in tennis is BACK....Pat Rafter is competing in Jim Courier's Outback Champions Tour, and won his first career seniors match.  When I was 12 years old, I used to watch the Newport Qualifying matches all day during the Campbell's ATP event....Pat Rafter would sign up year in and year out, occasionally making the main draw....As the story goes, Pat used to travel to Challengers and Futures with hitting partners, and often slept in his car to save money....he ended up making it big on tour and is a true hero.....it's great to see Pat back, now the question is, will be beat Sampras or McEnroe?!

RAFTER WINS IN OUTBACK CHAMPIONS SERIES DEBUT

LOS CABOS, Mexico, March 19 - Patrick Rafter of Australia made a successful
debut on the Outback Champions Series Thursday, defeating Luis Herrera of Mexico
6-1, 6-4 in the quarterfinals of the $150,000 Del Mar Development Champions Cup
at the Palmilla Tennis Club. Rafter, the two-time U.S. Open champion, is making
his first tournament appearance on the Outback Champions Series, the global
tennis circuit for champion tennis players age 30 and over, and will next play
Jim Courier of the United States in Friday's semifinals. Also on Thursday,
former world No. 1 Mats Wilander of Sweden advanced into the semifinals with a
6-3, 6-2 win over Leonardo Lavalle of Mexico. Wilander will next face 14-time
major singles champion Pete Sampras in the other men's semifinal scheduled for
Saturday.

"I was pretty happy with the way I played all around," said Rafter after his win
over Herrera. "I have always been happy to get on the court and represent my
country. I am excited to be here. My family and I are really happy to be in
Cabo. I have never been here and it is so beautiful."

Rafter, 36, is best known for his back-to-back victories at the U.S. Open in
1997 and 1998, becoming the first Australian man to win the event since John
Newcombe in 1973. A 2006 inductee into the International Tennis Hall of Fame,
Rafter also reached the men's singles final at Wimbledon in 2000 and 2001,
losing to Sampras and Goran Ivanisevic, respectively. Ranked No. 1 in the world
for one week in 1999, Rafter was a stalwart on Australia's Davis Cup team from
1994 to 2001, helping his nation to the title in 1999, although not playing the
final. He won 11 career singles title and 10 career doubles titles before ending
his ATP career in 2001.

Wilander played his usual steady baseline game on the hard courts of the
Palmilla Tennis Club against Lavalle, who like Rafter was making his Outback
Champions Series debut.

"I got my unforced errors down, played the points out because I could see Leo
getting tired," said Wilander. "I also played with high intensity."

Against Sampras, Wilander said he will need to rely on his first serve and play
aggressive if he is able to upset the seven-time Wimbledon champion on Saturday.

"I plan on hitting our on the serve a lot more and going for the returns a
little more," said Wilander of playing Sampras. "With Pete it is like target
tennis, quick points. This is good and bad, not much rhythm but quick points."

Sampras won the opening event on the 2009 Outback Champions Series, defeating
John McEnroe in the final of the Champions Cup Boston in February. McEnroe won
the second event of the year in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, defeating Jim Courier in
the final. Following the Del Mar Development Champions Cup, Outback Champions
Series events will be played in Grand Cayman (April 23-26),Newport, R.I. (August
20-23), Charlotte (Sept. 24-27), Surprise, Ariz. (Oct. 8-11) and Dubai, U.A.E.
(Nov. 18-21).

Founded in 2005, the Outback Champions Series features some of the biggest names
in tennis over the last 25 years, including Andre Agassi, Sampras, McEnroe,
Courier and others. To be eligible to compete on the Outback Champions Series,
players must have reached at least a major singles final, been ranked in the top
five in the world or played singles on a championship Davis Cup team. The
Outback Champions Series features eight events on its 2009 schedule with each
event featuring $150,000 in prize money as well as Champions Series ranking
points that will determine the year-end No. 1. The year-end champion will
receive a $100,000 bonus.

Cicma Indian Wells Predictions

For Indian Wells...I like Rafa, he is playing excellent hard court tennis right now, and I believe that he can grind anyone down in the dry heat.  As for the women, I like Ivanovic...she's the hands down favorite.  Also, Tennis Talk Colleagues, mark your calendars: I'm going to Miami to cover the Ericcson Open for World Team Tennis and NBCSports.com....so be sure to click for a few exclusive powerhouse interviews....GO TENNIS!

Cicma: McEnroe Still Rolling

John McEnroe is the ultimate warrior....at 50 years old, he's still beating very top caliber players in Jim Courier's Outback Champion's Series, and Billie Jean King's World Team Tennis.  After speaking with John last month, I think he may be stepping down from competing in the next few years...either way, he is still "the man"...and it's inspiring to see someone over the age of 49 still able to battle top pros.

McENROE TOPS COURIER TO WIN OUTBACK CHAMPIONS SERIES TITLE IN BRAZIL

RIO DE JANEIRO, Brazil, March 15 - John McEnroe is proving that he is getting
better with age. The 50-year-old three-time Wimbledon champion completed a
perfect week of tennis Sunday by defeating Jim Courier 6-2, 6-3 to win the
$150,000 Rio Champions Cup at the HSBC Arena. The title was McEnroe's third
career tournament victory on the Outback Champions Series, the global tennis
circuit for champion tennis players age 30 and over. With his win, McEnroe also
earned 800 ranking points to take over the No. 1 ranking on the Outback
Champions Series from Pete Sampras while pocketing $54,000 in prize money.

"They talk about the age, but nowadays in the U.S., 50 is the new 40," said
McEnroe of his half-century status. "We find ways to be in better physical shape
and I was feeling good today. I saw the other guys who are younger and how they
were with their backs, calves, knees hurt and here I am, happy that I am
standing. I know that if I were doing what I was doing today, when I was playing
the pro tour, being serious about my physical conditioning, I could have won
many more titles in my career."

McEnroe, who turned 50 years old on February 16, jumped on Courier early,
breaking him in the second game of the match, while breaking the two-time French
and Australian Open champion again in the eighth game to close out the first set
6-2. In the second set, McEnroe was unable to capitalize on break point chances
on Courier's serve in the second and fourth games of the set, but secured the
lethal break in the eighth game before serving out the match.

"The tennis ball doesn't see the age. It's zen," said Courier of McEnroe, who is
12 years his senior. "I don't think I have ever seen anyone over 50 play like
John. I didn't play bad today. John was just marvelous. He played some
unbelievable tennis today. This court here is faster than a grass court and it
suits his game. I can also play well on a hard court. I was serving well, but
John was fantastic."

Prior to the championship match, McEnroe defeated Mikael Pernfors, Jimmy Arias
and Jaime Oncins in round-robin play on Thursday, Friday and Saturday
respectively without dropping a set. Last month, he began the 2009 Outback
Champions Series by reaching the final of the Champions Cup Boston, where he
lost to Sampras. Courier, who earned 600 ranking points and $28,000 in prize
money with the runner-up showing, was appearing in his 11th career Outback
Champions Series final and was seeking his eighth career OCS title.

McEnroe, who said he specifically chose to play in the Rio Champions Cup to have
another opportunity to visit Brazil, said he was very touched by Rio and the
Brazilian people during his stay.

"I appreciated a lot coming to Rio and experiencing another culture," said
McEnroe. "People say that we Americans live for work and that the Brazilians
work to live. If we can have a mix of that, would be perfect. It is touching to
see how the people here, who struggle, have so little and still have the joy for
life. I respect it a lot."

In Sunday's third-place match, Pat Cash of Australia defeated Jimmy Arias of the
United States 7-5, 6-3.

Upset City at Indian Wells

Jelena Jankovic is out in the second round of Indian Wells.  I watched Jelena practice and play at Madison Square Garden last week, during the Billie Jean King Cup; she didn't look to be in top form....could this be a sign that Jankovic isn't going to win her first Grand Slam during the 2009 season?  most likely, yes.
